7.1.3 ADJUSTING INSPIRATORY FLOW<br />

Adjust the inspiratory flow in the way that the pressure plateau is reached<br />

within the first third of inspiratory time. A too low flow would not meet the<br />

spontaneous peak flow demand of the patient and there<strong>for</strong>e would prevent a<br />

decelerating flow pattern, which is essential <strong>for</strong> the function of PSV. A too<br />

high flow would lead to artificially increased peak flows at the start of<br />

inspiration and would there<strong>for</strong>e lead to an early termination of inspiration.
