call in the morning? Mint’s good for that, too: I love zingy
Korres Mint Tea Shower Gel, £8 for 250ml
(waitrose.com).
Rose Different types of roses are used in cosmetics – and
the benefits are quite diverse, too. Roses are anti-bacterial,
good for acne-prone skin. They’re anti-inflammatory,
helping to calm and soothe rosacea and eczema, as well as
being moisturising: the natural oils found in roses help lock
moisture in the complexion, while the sugars in rosepetals
have been found to soothe the complexion. Rosewater is a
natural astringent, too, helping to tighten pores and maintain
suppleness without leaving skin feeling dried out. Over and
above this, the scent of rose is sublime – and what I do know
is that when we love the scent of a product, we’re more likely
to use it consistently, and thus experience optimum benefits. A
beautiful way to experience rose is in the multi-tasking Neal’s
Yard Remedies Wild Rose Beauty Balm (a cleanser
and a deeply nourishing top-to-toe balm), £38 for 50g, and
I’m a big fan of the whole Weleda Wild Rose collection,
in particular the Smoothing Day Cream and Smoothing
Night Cream, £19.95 for 30ml each. When it comes to rosescented
hand treats, I don’t think you can beat Jurlique
Rose Hand Cream, £18 for 40ml: sublimely-scented, but
also fantastically softening, banishing even the most papery
dryness. And rose fans, if you’re quick you can snap up a
special limited edition Liz Earle Rose & Cedrat Cleanse
& Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser – I’m so in love with the
citrus-meets-rosiness scent that I’ve stockpiled.
Cucumber (Cucumis sativus) As long ago as 1653, cucumber’s
role in cosmetics to cleanse and cool the face was chronicled
by herbalist Culpeper, who added: ‘it’s also excellent for sunburning,
freckles and morphew’ (a rather unsexy name for
scurf, or scaly skin). Peeled and put through a juice extractor,
cucumber makes a lovely hot-weather skin lotion – just on its
own, or 50/50 with rosewater (keep it in the fridge to preserve
it) – but you can also take advantage of its soothing, cooling
action in a fab range called Yes to Cucumbers, which includes
a Daily Calming Moisturiser, £11.99 for 50ml, and a
Calming Face Mask, each £11.99 for 50ml. I also really
love Elemental Herbology Watermelon & Cucumber
Body Moisturiser, £21 for 240ml (naturismo.com).
