What garden project are you
most excited about this year?
All of our projects are
exciting in different ways: we
have some lovely estates in
Kent and Sussex, and some
equally fabulous small village
gardens. The Chelsea Barracks
Garden for Chelsea is being
constructed in the workshop,
so it will be exciting to see
this come together.
What garden feature or trend
has struck you most in recent
months?
I think a thankful move
back to the use of shrubs as
structure in beds and moving
away from the ornamental
grass-heavy planting which
has been fashionable of late.
It looks fine in a good light
on a good day, but isn’t for
every situation and it’s a
designer’s responsibility to be
aware of this. Everything in
moderation!
Does your own garden reflect
your professional work?
Parts of it – we moved house
recently and have a great
space which is being worked
on, slowly. It has hornbeam
and beech hedges, pergolas
with climbing roses and
clematis, a football pitch
and pizza oven. A natural
swimming pool is next on
the list.
Where in your garden do you
spend most time?
In the middle of the
flowerbeds, attacking
bindweed. Bulbs and dahlias
take up a lot of my time as I
can’t help photographing the
different combinations that
occur each year.
Name three favourite plants
that you will be using this
season, and briefly explain
what you love about them.
Daucus carota and Ridolfia
segetum – the latter I saw in
Sarah Raven’s catalogue and
used it in the M&G garden
at last year’s RHS Chelsea
Flower Show – umbellifers
have a fabulous architectural
shape which sits well against
verticals such as Verbascum
‘Cotswold Beauty’
Local garden designer Jo Thompson will be designing the
Chelsea Barracks Garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show
this year. Qatari Diar, the sponsor of the Chelsea Barracks
Garden, have announced that after this year’s show, the
garden will be donated to the Royal British Legion Industries
(RBLI), and will be permanently relocated to the Royal
British Legion Village in Aylesford, Kent
