The opportunity to study at
postgraduate level at the University
of Kent’s Centre in Tonbridge
At
the start of the year a group of students
from a wide variety of backgrounds spent
four mornings studying postgraduatelevel
English and American Literature looking at the
works of Wordsworth, Coleridge, Shelley, Keats and
Byron. This is the first time the University of Kent
has run this type of course and the enthusiasm of the
students was matched by their tutor, Professor James
Soderholm, who commented on the knowledgeable
group and lively discussions within class. Currently
running are Creative Writing and Contemporary
Art History; early reports confirm these are just as
enjoyable and successful for students and tutors alike.
Due to the success of these taster courses the
University is hoping to introduce full MA programmes
in Literature, History of Art and Creative Writing
at the centre in Tonbridge from September 2016,
which will be delivered on a part-time basis by
Kent’s expert academics. Students may be able to
access the new government-backed £10,000 loans for
Master’s study to pay for their fees and contribute
towards their living costs. The centrally located
Tonbridge centre has a longstanding reputation for
delivering high quality courses, to mainly mature
students who are often returning to study alongside
their other commitments. Louise Willis who studied
Comparative Literature comments “all the tutors have
been very supportive and encouraging, generous with
their time and in giving comprehensive feedback”.
The Centre is holding an Information Event on
Wednesday 4 May between 3 and 7pm where anyone
interested can discover the options for postgraduate
study in Literature, History of Art and Creative
Writing at Kent’s local specialist part-time centre. In
addition University staff will be available to talk about
all undergraduate or postgraduate programmes offered
at any of Kent’s locations in the UK and Europe.
In addition to the new postgraduate taster courses,
the Centre’s extremely popular short course
programme continues to offer undergraduate-level
courses in Art History, Classics, Creative Writing,
History, Literature, Music and Psychology.
