Jewelry: Blue plastic wristband from Cycle Oregon and a Petzl
brand LED headlamp.
Circumstances of Disappearance: Mark was last seen on Friday,
Sept 16, 2011 at 11:15 pm in Riddle, OR. He was volunteering on
an organized bike ride called Cycle Oregon. When Mark parted with
a group of friends at 11:15, he mentioned he was confused about
where his tent was. He is carrying a black tote bag that says “Cycle
Oregon” on the side and an iPhone 4 with no battery charge. He
does not have his wallet or any credit cards or ID. He had about $40
cash in his pocket.
Medical Conditions: Mark has survived two battles with non-
Hodgkins lymphoma. He had been suffering headaches for almost a
month leading up to Cycle Oregon and showed signs throughout the
weeklong Cycle Oregon trip of confusion and disorientation. These
symptoms have led his doctors to believe that he is suffering from a
relapse of his cancer in his frontal lobe. This medical condition will
cause Mark to be increasingly confused but stable for some amount
of time. The cancer will eventually spread to his brain stem and
impact functions necessary for his survival.
Four Teams That Could Go From
No Playoffs in 2013 to Super Bowl
Contenders in 2014
By Derrick R. Branch
First and foremost let’s get something straight
here. In no way am I listing the following teams as
the clear cut favorite to run through their division and
become Super Bowl contenders. This list is based
on strictly potential and the type of talent that these
four ball clubs possesses. Each of these teams has
something in common which is that they almost
made the playoffs. Without further ado, here’s the
list.
DETROIT LIONS
Other than the Cincinnati Bengals, the Detroit
Lions are one the leagues most talented ball clubs.
New head coach Jim Caldwell has worked with
Super Bowl winning quarterbacks Peyton Manning
and Joe Flacco. I expect Caldwell to do the same
with Lions signal caller Matthew Stafford in regards
to getting Stafford to play at the level everyone
knows that he can play at. However, unlike the
Colts and the Ravens, the Lions have maturity
issues that have cost them games that
would have earned the division title
and a shot at the playoffs. Jim
Caldwell will bring discipline and
common sense to a ball club that
lack both of those intangibles
in years past under former
head
coach
Jim
Schwartz.
Remem-
ber that the
Ravens
were heading
nowhere in 2012 until Caldwell took over
play-calling responsibilities.
ARIZONA CARDINALS
After four years of being in the cellar
of the NFC West, the Arizona Cardinals have their
fans excited once again. This ball club surely has
the ingredients to become the “Big Dog” in the NFC
West. However did you pay attention to the keyword:
NFC West? They are in the toughest division in
football where for the first time we may see all teams
finish the season with at least a 500 or higher winning
percentage. The Cardinals have the weapons
on offense and defense that can compete with division
heavyweights Seattle and San Francisco. In no
way that I am into superstition but the Super Bowl
is in Glendale, Arizona, which could spell disaster
for the Cards. No team in NFL history has hosted
and played in the Super Bowl in the same season. In
recent history teams that have had high expectations
and are expected to play and host the Super Bowl
in their own backyard have had disastrous seasons
and barely made it into the playoffs. However
there is the saying that states, “There’s a
first time for everything.” You should already
know where I am going with that one.
BALTIMORE RAVENS
Like the other two teams
that I mentioned, the Ravens
missed the playoffs by the
skin of their teeth. The
Ravens
are in
year
two in
the post-Ray
Lewis
era. Even though the
Ravens
were without Lewis for the first time last
year they were still expected to defend
their Super Bowl title and make the
playoffs however that was not the case.
The Ravens failed to find an identity
44 TJS 2014 www.TruckDriverMagazines.com
Sports, Etc.
on offense and struggled mightily
in the 2013 season. But here is my
reason why I believe the Ravens will
bounce back and return to dominance
in the AFC. As long as Ozzie
Newsome and head coach John
Harbaugh are around the Ravens
will always be in the mix to compete
for a Super Bowl title. You can also
put Joe Flacco onto that list as well.
Flacco gets criticized for not being
vocal enough or putting up the stats
like Drew Brees or Aaron Rodgers
does, but this guy knows how to win big games
in the postseason. As a matter of fact Flacco has
been in the playoffs since he has been in the league.
I know it had to suck for Flacco to take the early
fishing trip last year when the Ravens failed to make
the playoffs. Look for the Ravens to be significantly
better in 2014.
CHICAGO BEARS
Out of all the teams that I
mentioned, I like this one by far
to make it to Glendale. The Bears
have all the pieces in place to finally
dethrone division favorite and rival
the Green Bay Packers. For the first
time in team history the Bears finally
have dependable weapons on offense
that can complement their
vaunted “Monsters of the Midway”
defense that has been the pillars
of this historic franchise. I took notice of this when
the Bears played against the Packers in the season
finale. Never in my football life have I seen the Bears
offense put up those types of numbers at such a
rapid pace. Even though they would eventually lose
to the Packers in that game the Bears had made a
significant shift in their teams make up which is usually
a run first type of offense? In 2014, look for the
Bears to better than what they were in 2013.
NASCAR NEWS
HAMLIN, NO. 11 CREW HOPE
TO WEATHER THE STORM
Denny Hamlin said while the loss of crew
chief Darian Grubb will be felt, the NASCAR
Sprint Cup Series driver is confident his team
can weather the storm and “by Chase time,
we’ll be a contender.”
Grubb, Hamlin’s crew chief
on the No. 11 Toyota since
the end of the 2011 season,
is absent from Pocono Raceway
as he begins serving a
six-week suspension, along
with car chief Wesley Sherrill,
for penalties following postrace
inspection at Indianapolis
Motor Speedway.
Hamlin was penalized 75
driver and owner points while
Grubb and car chief Wesley
Sherrill were suspended.
Denny Hamlin
Team engineer Mike Wheeler is serving as
interim crew chief during Grubb’s absence.
JGR officials are appealing the penalties.
“It’s a tough deal. It’s something that obviously
affects our team,” Hamlin said, “but
there are obviously other opportunities as
well for us to go out there and get our stuff
going.
“As an organization we were heading in
the right direction so it kind of sucks because
you lose a little bit of that momentum, but
you also know that regardless of whether we
had that (issue) or not we were still running
pretty fast last week and
would’ve finished in the same
spot.”
NASCAR said the penalty
was the result of issues with
block-off plates inside the
car.
Hamlin said while Grubb
isn’t at the track, “really I’m in
pretty good hands.
“I’ve been with Mike
Wheeler longer than I’ve
been with anyone in the Cup
Series,” he said. “We worked
together a lot and I’m pretty confident in the
job that he’s going to do. … Even though
it’s tough losing those guys, and it’s tough
for them especially, I don’t think things will
change at the race track too much.
“Darian is in constant contact with (Wheeler)
at all times and myself. So, it’s not too bad
as far as that’s concerned.”
JOHNSON, KNAUS LOOKING
FORWARD TO IVES REUNION
Greg Ives is working toward a NASCAR
Nationwide Series championship with Chase
Elliott, but he was top of mind with his former
No. 48 teammates ahead of his transition
back to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.
Chad Knaus, who helped raise Ives in the
Hendrick system, called his return to crew
chief the No. 88 team in 2015 “really a nobrainer.”
“Greg is obviously a very good fit with me
and the rest of the team at the 48/88 shop,”
Knaus said. “He worked his way up from a
mechanic to a chassis set-up guy to the No.
48 lead engineer and won championships
56 TJS 2014
NASCAR NEWS
with us.”
Knaus noted it’s a popular decision at the
shop, which has seen Ives “come up as a
young man, have kids, grow, turn into a crew
chief, win races in the Nationwide Series,
lead the points over there, so everybody is
really excited to have him back.”
Ives’ main qualification for moving from
the Nationwide Series pit box to the No. 88
Sprint Cup team is “he brings fast race cars,”
according to Knaus.
With past crew chiefs, including uncle Tony
Eury and cousin Tony Eury Jr., Dale Earnhardt
Jr. has had turbulent relationships. Knaus
appeared to begin to address those concerns
but stopped short when he said, “Dale’s matured
enough now that he can handle … “
After acknowledging that Ives is a “good
guy” and “a family man,” Knaus reiterated,
“When you have fast race cars, everything
else seems to just take care of itself.”
Both Knaus and six-time Sprint Cup Series
champ Jimmie Johnson said current No. 88
crew chief Steve Letarte will be missed, but
the strength of Hendrick Motorsports is that
system, which has produced winners across
the 48/88 and 5/24 shops.
“Look, we are sad that Steve (Letarte) is
leaving, let’s be straight. We all like Steve, but
much like Steve and (No. 24 crew chief) Alan
(Gustafson) and myself, Greg has gone up
through the system,” Knaus said.
“Everybody knows him, everybody
respects him. He understands the Hendrick
way so it’s good. I think it’s going to be a
great thing.”
Johnson looks forward to seeing a familiar
face in the shop from his first five championships.
“I went through so many years seeing him
58 TJS 2014 HUNDREDS OF JOBS www.TruckJobSeekers.com
NASCAR NEWS
all the time and he was such an integral part
of finding speed in our race cars, and it’s
going to be nice to see him a lot more often
now,” Johnson said. “If you look at his stats
and what he has accomplished there as a
crew chief, you can say definitely he’s earned
this opportunity.”
While the two teams will continue to talk
about working together next year with a new
leader in charge of Earnhardt Jr.’s team,
there’s a Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup
to win.
“Our goal is to keep that No. 88 car running
up front, hopefully win the championship or
finish second in the championship between
us and the No. 88,” Knaus said. “We have got
to focus on that. We have to pay attention to
what we are trying to do this year. Try to get
the teams to stay together intact and move on
to 2015 without any problems.”
Maverick Announces
Several Changes to Driver
Compensation Plan
Maverick Transportation has recently
announced several changes to their driver
pay scale, including substantial mileage pay
increases. These pay increases will impact all
incoming drivers, from those straight out of
driving school to those with a year or more of
experience.
Employers Add 209,00
Jobs; For-Hire Trucking
Adds 2,300
U.S. employers extended their solid hiring
into July by adding 209,000 jobs. It was
the sixth straight month of job growth above
200,000, evidence that businesses are gradually
shedding the caution that had marked the
5-year-old recovery.
Still, July’s gain was less than in the previous
three months and probably wasn’t strong
enough to intensify fears that the Federal
Reserve will soon raise interest rates to curb
inflation.
The BLS said for-hire trucking added 2,300
jobs in July. During the first seven months of
2014, the BLS said for-hire trucking has added
21,800 jobs.
The unemployment rate ticked up in July to
6.2 percent from 6.1 percent as more Americans
started looking for work. Most didn’t find
jobs, but the increase suggests that they’re
more optimistic about their prospects. The
jobless aren’t counted as unemployed unless
they’re actively seeking work.
Average job gains over the past six months
Under the previous plan, new drivers had to
wait several months to participate in Maverick’s
Pay for Performance (PFP) program. Under the
new plan, all incoming over the road drivers
will receive an introductory PFP rate, which effectively
raises their mileage pay by $.02 - $.04/
mile across the board once they go solo.
This will bring Maverick’s starting pay to $.35
- $.53/mile depending on experience level and
division. After factoring in accessorial pay items
(i.e. tarp pay for flatbed drivers) professional
drivers at Maverick can expect to average
between $51,000 and $58,000 during their 1st
year of employment, depending on their experience
level and division when hired.
72 TJS 2014 www.TruckDriverMagazines.com
eached 244,000 in July, the best such average
in eight years.
The pickup in hiring
has yet to translate into
larger paychecks for most
Americans, a key factor that
has hobbled the recovery.
In July, average hourly
earnings ticked up just a
penny to $24.45. That’s
just 2 percent higher than it
was 12 months earlier and
is slightly below current
inflation of 2.1 percent. In a
healthy economy, wages before inflation would
rise 3.5 percent to 4 percent annually.
Higher-paying jobs showed strong increases
in July. Manufacturing added 28,000 jobs, the
most in eight months. Construction added
22,000 and financial services 7,000, its fourth
straight gain.
In the April-June quarter, the economy
expanded at a seasonally
adjusted 4 percent annual
rate after a steep 2.1 percent
contraction in the first
quarter. Americans stepped
up their spending, particularly
on autos, furniture and
other big-ticket items. Businesses
also spent more on
plants, office buildings and
equipment.
Americans are also
gradually gaining confidence in the economy,
which means spending could accelerate in
coming months. The Conference Board’s consumer
confidence index jumped to its highest
level in nearly seven years in July.
