Jules Monchanin (Parma Arupi Ananda)<br />

Henri le Saux (Abhishiktananda)<br />

A French Priest Jules Monchanin (1895-1957) (who was later to adopt the name Parma Arupi<br />

Anananda), and French Benedictine monk at the Abbey of Kergonan, Henri le Saux (1910-1973) (who<br />

was later to adopt the name Abhishiktananda), together formed the Saccidananda Ashram (also called<br />

Shantivanam) in 1948 at Tannirpalli in Tiruchirapalli District. Jules Monchanin died in 1957 and Henri Le<br />

Saux began to stay six months in the ashram and six months visiting various Hindu Ashrams and began<br />

a long period of dialogue with the Hindu leaders. He had visited Ramana Maharshi and his Ashrams<br />

continuously.<br />

Shantivanam belongs to the Congregation of Camaldolese in the Order of St.Benedict.<br />

Bede Griffiths, took over leadership of Saccidananda Ashram after Monchanin's death and le Saux's<br />

decision to leave for his hermitage. Bede Griffiths (1906 – 1993), born Alan Richard Griffiths took the<br />

name Swami Dayananda ("bliss of compassion").<br />
