MASSIAH AXED
Joanna Paris
Yesterday, the Opposition
Member of Parliament
for the All Saints East and
St. Luke constituency, the
Hon. Joanne Massiah, was
informed that she will be
excluded from the slate of
candidates representing the
United Progressive Party in
the General Elections due
in 2019 or sooner.
There have been several
questions in the public,
ever since what turned out
to be a fateful day, when
Massiah decided to defy
her party’s stance and attend
the 2016 Budget presentation
on January 21 st .
That occasion was boycotted
by the other members
of the United Progressive
Party (UPP).
Ever since that day, it
is fair to say that the esteemed,
poised and confident
politician has been
subject to constant ridicule
for her actions from the
hierarchy of the UPP and
even some devout supporters.
We may also remember
that there were already issues
brewing between MP
Massiah and leadership of
the UPP dating back to the
party’s convention in early
2015.
Massiah was a candidate
for the leadership of
the party but eventually lost
to the now political leader,
Senator Harold Lovell.
Fast forward to April
14 th 2016 and MP Massiah
received a letter from the
political leader of the UPP
primarily indicating that
she will be removed from
cont’d on pg 2
Opposition Member of Parliament for the All Saints East and St.
Luke constituency, the Hon. Joanne Massiah
United Progressive Party
(UPP) Political Leader, Senator
Harold Lovell, has been
criticized for his handling of
the issue regarding the decision
not to run Parliamentarian,
Joanne Massiah, on the
party’s ticket for the 2019
general elections.
Massiah is one of only
two females in the House of
Representatives and the single
female on the opposition
benches.
The move announced by
UPP Public Relations Officer,
Sen. Damani Tabor,
effectively bars Massiah
from seeking a second term
representing the UPP in the
All Saints East and St Luke
constituency. The move is
widely seen as a de facto expulsion
of Massiah from the
UPP.
Reacting to this development,
government spokesman
Lionel Max Hurst has
described the move as an
example of poor leadership
in the UPP.
“The inability of the current
UPP leadership to settle
a quarrel without fracturing
the organization, is a clear
indication that their leadership
is unsound,” Hurst
opined.
In a clear reference to
Lovell, Hurst stated that it
is not enough to be able to
cont’d from pg 1
the slate of candidates who will contest
the 2019 General Elections on the party’s
ticket.
The letter from the political leader also
speaks to what he described as “an extremely
acrimonious and divisive rift” between
him and Massiah.
The ever resilient politician indicated
that she is yet to fully internalize the contents
of the letter that she has received but
is fully aware that it is laced with untruths
and even goes against the party’s constitution
which “is alive and well”.
“I find that the contents are underpinned
by a high degree of “presumptuousness”
United Progressive Party (UPP) Political Leader, Senator Harold
Lovell
speak the English language
well in order to lead.
“The role of leadership
is to bring disparate parts in
any organization together. A
simple challenge within the
UPP to succeed an exiting
leader, ought not to result in
the appearance of misogyny
and personal dislike that are
now so public,” he noted.
Hurst gave his oft repeated
assessment that the UPP
continues to fail. “It has
failed the nation for over ten
years and two years in opposition,
it has failed itself and
the nation,” he added.
concerning the future. The letter is also
written with numerous untruths, which to
me evidences an absence of leadership giving
the political context”, she highlighted.
She expressed the view that the letter
also showcases a “lack of comprehension
for the UPP’s constitution, which lays out
provisions that should be taken when certain
actions are being contemplated and
“where a particular outcome is desired”.
The All Saints East and St. Luke representative
is appreciative of the support that
she has been receiving from members of
the public at large.
She said that despite everything, she is
comforted by the word of God.
Country still reeling from Stanford debacle
Seven years after the collapse
of the Stanford Holdings
in Antigua, the shock
waves from the fallout are
still being felt by the country.
Information has come to
light that the Antigua and
Barbuda government is being
sued in the state of Texas
by a group of Stanford investors.
“That lawsuit is in an advanced
stage, having been
filed shortly after the 2009
collapse of Stanford.
The then Attorney General
arranged with the law
firm to enter a defence, government
Chief of Staff, Lionel
Max Hurst reported.
According to Hurst the
law firm’s fees are quite helty
and over time they have
amounted to a significant
amount.
“The law firm charges
from US$580.00 per hour to
US$990 per hour. At the moment,
the outstanding payment
to the law firm stands
in excess of US$433,000.
The firm is demanding
US$216,000 by April 30.
And to be paid the remaining
$216,000 by June 1, 2016,”
he stated.
Hurst said the defence
must be done, but he could
not hide his frustrations that
R. Allen Stanford
issues surrounding the Stanford
debacle continue to
shadow the Gaston Browne
Administration.
“There is an appeal pending
and the firm requires
payment of US$75,000 on
that leg of the defence. These
suits must be defended.
“But the betrayal of Stanford
continues to plague the
Antigua and Barbuda people,
not just the workers of
SDC,” he declared.

Francis convicted and fined for drug possession
Alecia Mc Pherson
Shane Justin Francis was convicted
and fined $700 after pleading
guilty to a charge of drug possession
when he appeared at the St. John’s
Magistrates Court yesterday.
Francis was charged of unlawful
possession of controlled drug cannabis
and possession with intent to sell
after officers found cannabis on his
person.
On April 12, 2016 during the
morning, Officers from the Grays
Farm Police Station executed a
search at the defendant’s Green Bay
Hill premises.
Nothing was found in the home but
during the search of the defendant’s
person twenty-two small zip locked
bags containing cannabis were found
Alecia McPherson
Tyron Peter Astaphan of
Belmont Estate appeared at
the St. John’s Magistrates
Court having being charged
Alecia Mc Pherson
Peter Gray age 52, of Whenner Road
facing a charge of rape, appeared at the
St. John’s Magistrates Court yesterday.
The charge was read that Gray had
non-consensual sexual intercourse with
Monique Atley between July 1 and 31,
2103.
Copies of the medical report of the
complainant along with an accused statement
were submitted into evidence.
in his right pants pocket.
Officers also found a quantity of
monies in his left pants pocket which
he stated a friend gave him that morning
to keep.
The monies along with the defendant
were taken into custody.
The substance weighed 10.6
grams with an estimated street value
of $200EC and the monies amounted
to $1,695 EC and $4.00USD.
In court, the Francis pleaded guilty
to unlawful possession and not guilty
to possession with intent to sell.
His lawyer asked that his client
be spared sentencing and a fine be
imposed instead, he further told the
court that Francis is a first time offender,
also that he’s only 27 years
old and a father of one.
of malicious damage and
battery.
It is reported that Astaphan’s
wife Xyomara Astaphan
alleges that the accused
caused damages to
personal items in the amount
of $1,320, and allegations
of battery she suffered at the
hands of the accused, hence
The accused was not required to plead
to the charge and was committed to stand
trial the September’s assizes in the High
Court.
Reports are that the two worked together
as Security Guards, during one of
their work shifts at a construction site in
Crosbies Atley was forced into sexual act
by the accused.
A report was made to the Police and
Gray given the said charge.
However the prosecutor pulled
previous records of Francis showing
that he indeed has had two previous
possession offences.
In March of 2013 he was convicted
of cannabis possession and was
fined $2,000.
In September of 2013 he was convicted
of cannabis possession again
and fined $1,000.
However, the lawyer’s pleas were
taken into consideration and the
charge of intent to sell was dismissed
against him.
He was ordered to pay the fine
forthwith or be sentenced to six
months in prison.
The monies were confiscated and
an order was given for the substance
be destroyed.
Man charged for malicious damages
and battery against spouse
Man facing rape charge to
stand trial at High Court
the said charges.
These offences reportedly
took place on April 09,
2016.
The circumstances under
which these charges arise
are yet to be known as the
details of the matter has not
yet been heard in court.
The charges were read
to the accused, he pleaded
guilty to battery and not
guilty to malicious damages.
Committal proceedings
into the matter were set for
July 5, 2016.
The court heard that the
accused has moved from the
home so as to preserve the
peace at this time.
The accused was granted
station bail in this matter.

Friday 15th April 2016
Beyond the gates, 23 to walk free
Joanna Paris
It will be a joyful day for a total of 23
prisoners today, who will breathe a sigh
of relief, as they receive another chance
to live a “wholesome” life.
The inmates are being released under
the convict’s license and under the prerogative
of mercy.
The convict license provides for a
prisoner to serve the remainder of his
time outside of the prison walls.
Superintendent of Her Majesty’s
Prison, Albert Wade, explained that the
license gives persons another opportunity.
“An inmate who is granted a license,
that remaining portion of the sentence to
be served, instead of in the prison, they
will serve it outside, something similar
to parole”, he suggested.
Wade also outlined that there are
conditions associated with the license
that must be adhered to.
“There are certain conditions attached
to the inmate who is granted a
license. For instance, they are not to associate
with known person of bad character
example thieves etc, the must provide
their address or place to residence
to the nearest police station, they should
be able to present the license upon request
to a magistrate or police officer”.
He suggested that the license holder
should therefore have the document in
possession at all times.
The Prison boss said that if any of
these conditions are breached, the person
runs the risk of having their license
Alecia Mc Pherson
Karen Knowles age of
Bathlodge Heights is before
the Court on two separate
charges; dangerous driving
and disorderly conduct.
Both Lisa John- Weste
and husband Loy Weste of
McKinnon’s have made separate
Police reports against
Knowles, which as a result
she’s now answering the
said charges. Mr. Weste and
Knowles were once married
and share a child together.
Allegations are that on
September 8, 2014, sometime
during the morning
hours, Knowles while driving
her vehicle A763, followed
the couple during
their morning commute on
All Saints Road, she positioned
her vehicle in such a
way preventing them from
driving past her.
It is alleged that this was
done by the accused several
times before the couple were
finally able to drive without
hindrance to work.
It is also alleged that Later
that same day, Ms. Weste
While driving alone along
McKinnon’s Main Road
heading in the direction of
town, encountered the accused
once again coming in
revoked and may be returned to prison.
In order to be a beneficiary of the
special program, an inmate should have
good work ethic and be somewhat of a
role model for the other prisoners.
Section 84 (1) of the Constitution,
makes way for Prerogative of Mercy,
under which the Governor General is
petitioned on the inmates’ behalf; the
petitions are forwarded to the Prison Superintendent
for a report on the conduct
and work of the inmate and to the mercy
committee for its consideration.
Knowles facing dangerous driving, disorderly conduct charges
the opposite direction, reports
are the accused veered
over into Weste’s Lane,
causing her to swerve suddenly
to the left corner off
the road to avoid collision.
A report of the matter was
made to the St. John’s police
Station and Knowles was
charged of driving which is
dangerous to the public and
also charged with disorderly
conduct.
In court, Police Corporal
Brandon Thomas attached to
Minor Offence Department,
gave sworn statement of the
said allegations reported to
him by Ms. Weste on September
8, 2014. Knowles’
Lawyer put to Thomas that
his client could’ve veered
into the complainant’s lane
trying to avoid potholes.
Thomas however stated
that, during his investigations
into the report he was
accompanied by Ms. Weste
back to the scene where the
alleged offence took place
and he don’t remember seeing
any potholes on that side
of the road.
The matter was adjourned
to continue on April
19 th , before Chief Magistrate
Walsh in the St. John’s Magistrates
Court.

ernment’s offer to commit
to building the embassy is
further proof of the extent
of the deep friendship and
long term commitment between
our countries”, Minister
Fernandez said.
In response, a grateful
and humble Chinese Ambassador,
Ren Gongping,
described the gesture by the
government under the leadership
of Prime Minister,
the Hon. Gaston Browne, as
a diplomatic one.
He thanked the government
for the land, which he
said will be utilized to build
a permanent office and other
amenities, to cement China’s
diplomatic presence in
the twin island state
Prime Minister, the Hon.
Gaston Browne, explained
that the government’s relationship
with China is arguably
one of the best diplomatic
ties that the country
has had for approximately
33 years.
He indicated that
the government is “very
pleased” to be on the giving
end for the first time.
“We are now at the giving
end and we do so with
pride and pleasure knowing
that even though it may
seem like a small token, it is
significant from the standpoint
that China can now
boast that it owns a piece of
the rock here in Antigua and
Barbuda”.
Prime Minister Browne
added that the government
is seeking to construct a
“marquis embassy”, which
will stand out among other
buildings in the Caribbean.
He encouraged the Chinese
to be creative with
their architecture, since the
country has a diversity of
cultures.
He added that is looking
forward to the “masterpiece”
that will be constructed
The agreement was
signed by the Minister of
Foreign Affairs, the Hon.
Charles Max Fernandez and
the Director General within
the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs of China, Soon Ling
Zhang.

Pembroke Pines, Florida - Registration
opened today for the 23 rd annual
FCCA Cruise Conference & Trade
Show, taking place in San Juan, Puerto
Rico from September 26-30, 2016.
The event will gather over 1,000 cruise
tourism stakeholders and more than 100
FCCA Member Line executives, presidents
and CEOs for a four-day series of
meetings, workshops and networking
opportunities.
“The FCCA Cruise Conference &
Trade Show helps cruise tourism stakeholders
maximize their business,” said
Micky Arison, chairman of Carnival
Corporation and the FCCA, who will be
on-hand at the event.
“In addition to imparting necessary
operational knowledge, the event provides
an invaluable resource-knowing
the right people-by linking attendees
with some of industry’s most important
decision makers.”
The event offers a unique opportunity
to target representatives from FCCA’s
19 Member Lines who decide where
ships call, what products are sold and
used onboard, and how to invest in destinations
and infrastructure.
Attendees can access these key decision
makers in a format that balances
business sessions and casual interaction,
including one-on-one meetings with
pre-selected cruise executives, which
provide a chance to promote products
and receive individualized input; social
functions that foster networking and
relationship building; and workshops
focused on current issues with panels
comprised of knowledgeable industry
professionals and cruise executives,
along with the presidents and CEOs
heading a roundtable discussion.
Together, this creates the perfect
forum for exchanging information and
industry trends, sharing ideas, and cultivating
valuable business relationships.
Plus, a ratio of about one cruise executives
per 10 attendees affords some of
the best odds to meet and gain insight
from the influential cruise executives,
as well as cruise lines’ presidents and
CEOs.
“I look forward to interacting with
cruise tourism’s key stakeholders [at
the FCCA Cruise Conference & Trade
Winners will be awarded
monetary prizes ranging from
USD 3,000 to US 1,000 in
each age category.
All general inquiries regarding
the competition
FCCA Cruise Conference & Trade Show now open for registration
Show],” said Adam Goldstein, president
& COO, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd,
and perennial participant at the event.
“This is a valuable opportunity for
regional destinations and operators to
learn how they are being affected by and
can take advantage of the industry’s latest
developments.”
The Trade Show expands this target,
allowing exhibitors to capture the attention
of this prominent audience. Any
booth puts their product, company, or
destination on attendees’ and executives’
minds, but special destination pavilion
options provide the greatest impact at
the Trade Show by showcasing a destination
product as a team-from vendors
and tour operators to destination ministries
and port operators.
Attendees can also experience San
Juan’s exciting setting, activities and
new infrastructure, allowing attendees
to experience what cruise passengers see
and do during a stay-over visit and why
it welcomed more than 1.6 million cruise
passengers from FCCA Member Lines
last year-a 17 percent increase since the
destination last hosted the event in 2011.

Indeed, in an interview convenient political crutch
the Miami Herald published had performed badly at
deepening political crisis as other Observer missions
on the island ( http://www. declared that the elections
By Sir Ronald Sanders
were plagued by irregularities.
The admission that,
while numerous, the irregularities
were not significant
enough to materially affect
the outcome of the elections,
did little to assuage suspicion.
And, the problem is
that like a sore that has been
allowed to fester for almost
6 months, suspicion of the
elections has spread more
widely in the Haitian body
politic.
The October 25 elections
delivered a presidential runoff
between Jovenel Moïse
of Martelly’s PHTK party
after he received 32.76%
of the vote and Jude Célestin
of the Ligue Alternative
Pour le Progrés et l’Emancipation
Haïtienne (Lapeh)
party, who received 25.29%.
The other 50 candidates
shared less than 32%. That
run-off was not completed
before Martelly was due to
demit office on February 6.
It was that failure to hold the
second round of elections
amid political confusion and
simmering violence that led
to the February 5 political
Agreement for the establishment
of an interim government
with a time table for
the holding of the run-off
elections on April 24 and
the installation of an elected
President on May 14.
As it turned out, continuing
distrust between the
political actors within and
outside the National Assembly
which was charged, under
the agreement, with the
selection of an interim President
and an interim Prime
Minister took longer to be
settled than was anticipated.
The same distrust continues
to haunt the second round of
the elections. The spectre
of a flawed first round election
hangs ominously over
the second. This is why the
majority of political players
are insisting on verification.
The argument is simple: if
the first round was tainted,
however strenuous the scrutiny
of the second round, the
entire process is contaminated.
My concern for any President
elected after a second
round without verification
of the first is that he will not
command the respect and
authority that validation will
bestow. Any President in
Haiti who is not widely regarded
as legitimately elected
with a mandate to govern,
will not be able to hold the
country together and to give
it the leadership it needs for
very tough choices that lie
ahead. In such circumstances,
the persistent poverty and
underdevelopment that has
plagued Haiti will deepen
and the potential for political
conflict and civil strife
will intensify. Consequently,
the UN forces in Haiti,
that contributing countries
are keen to withdraw, will be
compelled to remain and the
flow of refugees to the US
particularly will resurge.
Against this background
it is far better to verify the
first round elections before
proceeding with the second.
I was heartened by a reported
statement on behalf of the
United States by its Special
Coordinator on Haiti, Ambassador
Ken Merten, to the
effect that if Haiti wants a
verification process it should
do so quickly. In arguing
that such a process would
serve to validate a President
who emerges from a second
round elections, I had also
advocated that a verification
committee, drawn from
civil society only, should be
established swiftly and that
the international community
should provide it with the
money and other resources
to complete the verification
within the shortest possible
time. Once the verification
is complete, the elections
for the President can follow
quickly.
It has been suggested
that one reason for not proceeding
with verification of
the first round is that such
massive fraud might revealed,
requiring the cancellation
of the proceedings
thus far, and the staging of
new elections. But, if massive
fraud is uncovered, is
that not good reason for cancelling
the October 25 poll
and starring afresh? The
alternative would be to join
a process of imposing upon
Haiti a fraudulently elected
government. That could not
possibly be right.
In any event, I am satisfied
from my knowledge
of the OAS elections observation
process and the
people of high integrity and
professionalism that run it,
that any scientific verification
process by qualified
and respected Haitian civil
society officials will result,
by and large, in the same result.
What the international
community should now do
is to provide Haiti’s new
nine-member provisional
electoral council, headed by
Léopold Berlanger, with the
tools it needs to establish a
verification committee and
set it to work.
If Jovenel Moïse and
Jude Célestin, who emerged
from the first round as contenders,
have faith in their
electability, they should
have no fear of verification
and of their capacity for one
to triumph over the other in a
Barbados brewery moves to break into Cuban market
BRIDGETOWN - Barbados’ Bank
Breweries Limited will be trying to export
one million cases of beer to Cuba
from May. The disclosure has come
from the country’s Industry Minister
Donville Inniss as he also reported that
early next month, a delegation comprising
government and private sector
officials would be travelling to Cuba on
a trade mission.
He said that with the formal re-establishment
of diplomatic relations
between Cuba and the United States,
Barbados is among the Caribbean
Community (CARICOM) countries
seeking to further partner with Cuba in
ROSEAU - The Government
of Dominica has signed
a contract with NSG Management
and Technical Services
Limited of Barbados
worth EC$18,182,437.35 for
a major project in Roseau.
The contract was signed on
Wednesday.
Work is expected to begin
in May and will take 12
months to complete. It forms
part of the Roseau Enhancement
Project. Public Works
Minister Miriam Blanchard
explained that the project
will include demolishing
and reconstructing the West
Bridge, reconstructing the
retaining wall and associated
drainage works between
the West Bridge and the EC
Loblack Bridge and dredging
the Roseau River between
the Dominica China
Friendship Bridge and the
EC Loblack Bridge.
“The conceptualization
of the Roseau Enhancement
Project commenced in 2013
and resulted in our presentation
to the public by NSG
Management and Technical
Services Limited at the
State House,” she stated.
She stated that elements of
the design contract included
the replacement of the
CDC issues travel notice for St. Lucia
CASTRIES - One week after local health
authorities confirmed its first autochthonous
Zika virus infection, the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a travel
notice yesterday for the island of St. Lucia.
Local mosquito transmission means that
mosquitoes in the area are infected with Zika
virus and are spreading it to people.
There is no vaccine or medicine for Zika.
Because Zika virus is primarily spread by
mosquitoes, CDC recommends that travelers
to St Lucia protect themselves from mosquito
bites which includes: Cover exposed
skin by wearing long-sleeved shirts and long
pants.
Use EPA-registered insect repellents
containing DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon
and breastfeeding women can use all
EPA-registered insect repellents, including
DEET, according to the product label. (St
an effort to take advantage of emerging
opportunities.
Inniss spoke about the plans when
he received a courtesy call from Cuba’s
Ambassador to Barbados, Francisco
Fernandez Pena. He said that apart
from forging deeper economic relations
with Cuba, the Barbados Government
was also eager to engage robustly
in trade, and there were a number of
companies ready to do business with
the Spanish-speaking nation.
Inniss also pointed out that over the
years, Cuba has been committed to providing
extensive technical assistance
to Barbados, especially in the area of
health care. And Ambassador Pena noted
that since the establishment of diplomatic
relations in December 1972,
Barbados and Cuba have maintained
a cordial relationship characterized by
cooperation and mutual respect. (Caribbean360).
The Roseau Enhancement
Project has been described
as a comprehensive
plan comprised of a number
of different projects related
to the urban infrastructure
upgrading and enhancement
to include the road network,
bridges, drainage, street
lighting and streetscape of
Roseau and the improvement
of the flow of traffic in
Roseau among others. When
the MOU was signed in 2014
it was said that Dominica’s
Belize outlines proposal to end border dispute
BELMOPAN - Belize
has outlined 11 new proposals
that it hopes will end
the latest border dispute
with Guatemala, Foreign
Minister Wilfred Elrington
has said.
Elrington, who met with
his Guatemalan counterpart,
Carlos Raul Morales,
last Friday to discuss the incident
in the Sarstoon area,
said that Belize is hoping
the new proposals will form
part of a new agreement between
the two countries.
Elrington said that Belize
is hoping that the
“channels of the Sarstoon
River shall continue to be
freely navigable by vessels
and boats of each of the two
countries without any interference
or trailing by the
other”.
Last month, the Belize
government called on the
Organisation of American
States (OAS) to conduct
an investigation following
a shooting incident in
which a senior Belize Defence
Force (BDF) member
was shot at least four times
while in the Sarstoon area.
Guatemala and Belize
have had a long-running
border dispute, with Guatemala
claiming the whole or
part of Belize since 1940.
Last month, the 15-member
Caribbean Community
(Caricom) reiterated its
support for Belize.
Belize sent a protest
note to Guatemala over the
incident, but the Guatemalans
replied disagreeing
with Belmopan’s version of
the incident.
Elrington said that the
second proposal calls for
“whenever any vessels of
any one of the parties approaches
the base of the
other party or any other
vessel, it shall reduce its
speed as a token of respect
and friendship and to avoid
injury or damage to persons
presence together
with delegations from both
countries aims to review
the bilateral agenda, especially
the Joint Haitian-
Dominican Committee.
“The aim is to normalise
the dialogue from
this meeting, because there
are many issues of common
interest, as neighboring
countries, that need to
or property”.
He said the law enforcement
and armed forces of
both parties should refrain
from any threatening, abusive
or unfriendly actions,
words or behaviour of any
kind with respect to each
other in and around the said
river.
He said that the parties
shall also co-operate on the
basis of sovereign equality,
mutual benefit and good
fate in order to promote and
achieve the goals of this
agreement and that both
parties shall cooperate in
preventing and countering
any illegal activities including
drug trafficking, human
trafficking, arms smuggling,
contraband and other
illegal activities of a transnational
nature. (Jamaica
Dominican Republic and Haiti
ties at the ‘highest level’ again
be addressed for the wellbeing
of both peoples,”
Navarro said, and stressed
the importance for both
nations to foster an “environment
of harmony.”
Among the key points
the commission aims to
discuss is trade, and the
ban on overland access of
twenty-three Dominican
products enacted by Haiti
during former president
Michel Martelly’s term in
office.
He said as the result
of the meeting, economic
issues and cooperation
between the Hispaniola
neighbors would also be
reviewed “as a starting
point to relaunch our relations.”
Navarro said the bilateral
joint committee would
meet in the coming weeks
on a date to be announced,
adding that even though
the talks between the
two countries were never
broken off, “ties were
strained” and “some issues
were left stranded.” (Dominica
At least two dead after earthquake hits Japan
TOKYO - At least two people were
killed and 45 were injured by a powerful
magnitude 6.5 earthquake that
knocked over houses and buckled roads
in southern Japan on Thursday.
Both victims were from the hardest-hit
town of Mashiki, about 9 miles
east of Kumamoto city on the island
of Kyushu, said Kumamoto prefecture
disaster management official, Takayuki
Matsushita.
Earlier, the Japanese Red Cross Kumamoto
hospital said it had admitted
or treated 45 people on Thursday, including
five with serious injuries. The
quake struck at 9.26pm. There was no
risk of a tsunami.
“There was a kaboom and the whole
house shook violently sideways,”
Takahiko Morita, a resident of Mashiki,
a town near the epicentre, said in
a telephone interview with Japanese
broadcaster NHK.
“Furniture and bookshelves fell
down, and books were all over the
floor.”
Morita said some houses and walls
collapsed in his neighbourhood, and
water supply had been cut off. Police in
BRASILIA - The government
in Brazil is seeking
an injunction at the Supreme
Court in an effort to
prevent an impeachment
vote against President Dilma
Rousseff. Ms Rousseff, who
says her opponents are plotting
a “coup”, faces claims
she manipulated government
accounts. She has vowed to
fight to “the last minute” despite
the desertion of three
allied parties ahead of Sunday’s
vote.
The Supreme Court is
President Dilma Rousseff
to gather for an extraordinary
session. Brazilian media
said a Rousseff-backed
judge would rule. If the
court refuses the injunction,
the impeachment debate will
start today.
Then, if two-thirds of the
lower house votes for impeachment,
the motion will
pass to the Senate. An impeachment
vote would pave
Kumamoto prefecture said they had received
reports of a number of collapsed
houses and people possibly trapped inside.
Japan’s chief cabinet secretary,
Yoshihide Suga, told a news conference
that the damage was being assessed,
but there were no abnormalities
at nearby nuclear facilities.
The epicentre was 74 miles northeast
of the Sendai nuclear plant, the
only one operating in the country. Kasumi
Nakamura, an official in the village
of Nishihara, said the rattling started
modestly before becoming violent
and lasted about 30 seconds.
“Papers, files, flower vases and everything
fell on the floor,” he told NHK.
There were multiple aftershocks, the
largest one reaching a 5.7-magnitude
about 40 minutes later, according to the
Japan Meteorological Agency.
The US Geological Survey measured
the quake’s preliminary magnitude
at 6.2 and said it was 14 miles
deep. It said there was a low likelihood
of casualties but some damage was
possible. (The Guardian).
Brazil seeks to block Rousseff impeachment vote
be removed from office. Attorney
General Jose Eduardo
North Korea poised to make unprecedented missile test
PYONGYANG - Pentagon officials
are expecting North Korea to test fire
an intermediate-range missile Friday
morning, CBS News national security
correspondent David Martin reports.
The missile in question is a Musadan,
which is road mobile and has
enough range to reach the Aleutians
and Guam.
It’s never been tested before, so this
is another step toward being able to
threaten the United States with a nuclear
weapon.
ABUJA - A video released
Wednesday appears
to show some of the Nigerian
schoolgirls who were kidnapped
by the Boko Haram
militant group two years ago
alive.
The Islamist militants
sent the video, obtained by
CNN, to negotiators as proof
that the girls were alive, according
to the broadcaster.
CNN showed the video,
which is believed to have
been made in December,
to Rifkatu Ayuba, whose
17-year-old daughter Saratu
was among those taken. “My
had successfully tested a new intercontinental
ballistic rocket engine that
will give it the ability to stage nuclear
strikes on the U.S.
The engine’s ground test, if true,
would be a big step forward for the
North’s nuclear weapons program,
which saw its fourth atomic test earlier
this year. But the North may still need a
good deal of work before it can hit the
U.S. mainland with nuclear missiles.
South Korean officials say North
Korea doesn’t yet have a reliable intercontinental
ballistic missile, let alone
the ability to arm it with a nuclear warhead.
official Korean Central News Agency,
“I felt like removing her
from the screen,” she added.
her from the screen.”
Nigerian Information Minister
CNN the government was
reviewing the video.
Boko Haram kidnapped
276 girls from their school
in Chibok, northeastern Nigeria,
on the night of April
A number later escaped
the militants, but 219 remain
missing, prompting the
Washington and its allies consider
North Korean provocations, including
last month’s launch of a medium-range
ballistic missile that violated U.N. Security
Council resolutions that prohibit
any ballistic activities by North Korea.
It was the North’s first medium-range
missile launch since early 2014. (CBS
Flash floods in Iran kill two
TEHRAN - Iran’s state TV is reporting
that heavy rains in Iran’s western and southwestern
provinces has resulted in flash floods
that killed two people.
The Thursday television report says that
the country’s crisis management committee
held an emergency meeting to study the situation
in affected areas. Iran’s railway authority
canceled all trains scheduled for today to
Flash floods have washed away cars and
blocked roads between several cities and villages
in Lorestan and Khuzestan provinces,
Finch, McCullum
propel Lions to big win
RAJKOT - Another
one-sided encounter, another
win for the chasing team.
This season’s IPL, it seems,
is on repeat mode, after
Gujarat Lions cruised to a
seven-wicket win against
Rising Pune Supergiants in
Rajkot.
After a strong start, Supergiants
looked set for a
score in excess of 180, but a
late collapse quickly turned
the contest in Lions’ favour.
Aaron Finch and Brendon
McCullum then effectively
killed the game after pillaging
62 in the Powerplay,
during their chase of 164.
MS Dhoni had pulled
back some momentum for
Supergiants by contributing
to a 20-run last over in the
first innings, but his bowlers
threw it all away.
Loose deliveries stacked
up, and the Lions openers
duly dispatched them. Four
fours and two sixes off
the seamers meant Dhoni
turned to M Ashwin in the
last over of the Powerplay,
but Finch took the legspinner
for four fours in a 19-
run over.
85-run opening stand
Finch then hit Rajat
Bhatia for two sixes over
long-on in the seventh over,
but holed out to square leg
for 50 - his second half-century
of the season. By then,
though, the damage had
been done.
McCullum continued to
latch on to wayward bowling,
as the spinners failed
to extract much from the
patchy surface.
Supergiants’ day was
summed up when Dhoni
missed a routine stumping
with McCullum well short
of his crease after R Ashwin
yorked the batsman.
After McCullum lobbed
one to cover off Ishant
Sharma, the captain Suresh
Raina and Dwayne Bravo
completed the formalities
with cameos as Lions
reached the target with two
overs to spare.
Supergiants’ batting was
a tale of two halves. Faf du
Plessis and Ajinkya Rahane
continued from where they
left off against Mumbai Indians,
using exquisite timing
to plunder five fours in
the first 21 balls.
After Pravin Tambe
trapped Rahane lbw in the
fourth over, Pietersen and
du Plessis ensured a productive
Powerplay with a
