FROM THE CAPTAIN ...
Exerpt from Captains Speech at the
Captain’s Dinner 2016.
Steven has already said a lot of thank you’s
but on behalf of the member’s here at Zimbali
I would like to extend my thanks to all the staff
and Contractors here at Zimbali. It is these
guys who make us happy to be here and the
leadership that Steven provides ensures that
we have lots of happiness. Some of us too
much happiness at times but we send those
ones home to their wives.
When I visit other Clubs, I always match the
comparative offerings. I must say our staff does
a wonderful job here. They all seem to have a
happy disposition and remember everybody’s
names so well. The touch of welcoming you
back into the pub by name after golf makes you
feel so welcome. Your preferred drink is just
brought to you before you have to ask. We are
truly fortunate to have them here to serve us.
We all thank you.
Anybody who has been on a committee will tell
you that it is impossible to get it right all of the
time but I think as a Management / Committee
working team we certainly have made a
difference this past year.
This was my theme as incoming Captain
“Making A Difference” and will continue to be
in the upcoming year. Our constitution requires
the Captain to be voted in by the Committee
after their selection at the AGM. So it is not a
done deal that you will be Captain again until
the votes have been cast. If you have served
one of the two years and the committee do
not like you, you may be out. Thankfully this
was either not the case or nobody else on
committee wanted the hot seat. So you have
me for another year.
I must say I have really enjoyed my time as
Captain this past 12 months and the committee,
led by Neill Edwards as our Chairman, have been
incredibly supportive of me. If you attended the
AGM this morning, you will be aware that Neill
has stepped down from the Golf Committee.
Neill spends a lot of his time at Leopard Creek
where he has a house and he dutifully returned
to Zimbali to take care of matters here as and
when required. As I have said before, most of
the people at Zimbali are retired and the same
is true of the Committee. We all juggle our
personal time with our responsibilities at the
Club. Neill did that well.
It is common knowledge that if you play a
round of golf with Neill that you will neither
get home early nor sober. This has commonly
become known as being Edwardised.
I would like to ask Neill to come up to the
podium and to accept a small gift from the
Members thanking him for all his time he has
dedicated to the Club over the past 6 years or
so, that he has served us
The Lady’s Captain has already been announced
and I welcome the chance to work alongside
Gesi Graham who will have Annece Winton as
her Vice-Captain. The Lady’s Captain currently
only serves for one year. June Allan officially
hands over tonight and did a great job during
her year and I thank her for all her help whilst
we were together. She was a marvellous help.
Thank you June.
Your committee for next year will be:
Led by John Winton (Chairman)
