Emergence of f<strong>in</strong>tech companies <strong>in</strong> <strong>India</strong> is a prelude to the<br />
transformation <strong>in</strong> payments, lend<strong>in</strong>g and personal f<strong>in</strong>ance<br />
space that has manifested <strong>in</strong> significant <strong>in</strong>vestor <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong><br />
the recent times. F<strong>in</strong>tech is enabl<strong>in</strong>g the entire value cha<strong>in</strong><br />
of the traditional f<strong>in</strong>ancial <strong>in</strong>stitutions to establish better<br />
connects with customers and to provide new offer<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong><br />
the market. There are numerous start-ups cutt<strong>in</strong>g across<br />
multiple bus<strong>in</strong>ess segments and functions, predom<strong>in</strong>antly <strong>in</strong><br />
payments and lend<strong>in</strong>g space.<br />
KPMG has identified seven themes that have the potential<br />
to redef<strong>in</strong>e the f<strong>in</strong>ancial services sector, and if harnessed <strong>in</strong><br />
a proper manner can open numerous prospects for banks.<br />
Figure 9 depicts the f<strong>in</strong>tech themes along with a snapshot<br />
of key <strong>in</strong>itiatives taken <strong>in</strong> each one of them from an <strong>India</strong>n<br />
context.<br />
Payments and f<strong>in</strong>ancial <strong>in</strong>clusion have ga<strong>in</strong>ed major market<br />
attention. At the same time, there is a strong case of<br />
<strong>in</strong>vest<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the lend<strong>in</strong>g and security biometrics space of<br />
F<strong>in</strong>tech. Slowly, a clutch of companies are beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g to<br />
look at robo-advice and Bank <strong>in</strong> a Box as new <strong>in</strong>vestment<br />
avenues. Blockcha<strong>in</strong> is an emerg<strong>in</strong>g tech-mammoth and<br />
has a potential for mass market implementation <strong>in</strong> future.<br />

Next-generation<br />
payments<br />
• 46 per cent of <strong>in</strong>dian f<strong>in</strong>tech are<br />
focused on payments and trade<br />
process<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
• Payment <strong>in</strong>itiative such as UPI<br />
are expected to def<strong>in</strong>e the future<br />
of payments.<br />
P2P lend<strong>in</strong>g<br />
• 20 new P2P lenders <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>dia <strong>in</strong> 2015.<br />
• P2P on the verge of enter<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
regulatory paradigm.<br />
Blockcha<strong>in</strong><br />
• Industry com<strong>in</strong>g together and<br />
explor<strong>in</strong>g different hypothesis<br />
through hackathons.<br />

areas of consideration were exist<strong>in</strong>g f<strong>in</strong>tech start-up ecosystems,<br />
government regulations and support and steps taken by <strong>in</strong>cumbent<br />
market participants.<br />
