Next generation payments<br />
Innovative digital technologies disrupt<strong>in</strong>g the traditional payments<br />
value cha<strong>in</strong><br />
Overview<br />
Globally, banks are mov<strong>in</strong>g from their traditional conservative<br />
m<strong>in</strong>dsets, to align their strategies and better collaborate with<br />
f<strong>in</strong>tech players <strong>in</strong> the payments space. They have realized<br />
that failure to do so might leave them with a risk of be<strong>in</strong>g<br />
swayed away by nimble competitors. To achieve this, banks<br />
are collaborat<strong>in</strong>g with f<strong>in</strong>tech through a number of ways such<br />
as venture capital <strong>in</strong>vestments, <strong>in</strong>cubator programmes,<br />
<strong>in</strong>novation labs, strategic partnerships and accelerator<br />
programmes.<br />
A major breakthrough <strong>in</strong> payments transformation has been<br />
due to the support of regulators <strong>in</strong> lay<strong>in</strong>g down the<br />
foundation for technology companies and non-payment<br />
providers <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>novat<strong>in</strong>g momentously <strong>in</strong> this field.<br />
Undoubtedly retail and consumer payments are lead<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the way <strong>in</strong> adoption of <strong>in</strong>novative payments capabilities.<br />
This has been aided by the growth <strong>in</strong> e-commerce and<br />
the <strong>in</strong>creased penetration of mobiles. The follow<strong>in</strong>g graph<br />
shows some of the mobile payment revenue numbers<br />

• Adoption of payment hubs - F<strong>in</strong>ancial <strong>in</strong>stitutions are<br />
aggressively look<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>in</strong>vest<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> harmonis<strong>in</strong>g their<br />
payments <strong>in</strong>frastructure by mov<strong>in</strong>g to payment hubs.<br />
These hubs are expected to allow the process<strong>in</strong>g of any<br />
form of payments irrespective of the orig<strong>in</strong>ation channel.<br />

Some of the key trends <strong>in</strong> digital payments have been<br />
around:<br />

• Adoption of contactless payments - NFC (Near Field<br />
Communication) adoption, Host card emulation and QR<br />
code generation have been lead<strong>in</strong>g the way for electronic<br />
<strong>in</strong>teractions between consumers and retailers. Globally,<br />
mobile proximity payment is expected to reach user base<br />
of 939 million by 2019 01 .<br />
• Move towards Cashless Societies - Few of the countries<br />
<strong>in</strong> the Scand<strong>in</strong>avian region <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Sweden, Norway and<br />
Denmark are on course of becom<strong>in</strong>g cashless societies<br />
and are adopt<strong>in</strong>g no cash models. This has been possible<br />
because of banks <strong>in</strong> these countries adopt<strong>in</strong>g the f<strong>in</strong>tech<br />
revolution and respond<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a positive way to <strong>in</strong>novations.<br />
• Real Time payments – This is revolutionis<strong>in</strong>g the retail<br />
funds transfer by provid<strong>in</strong>g electronic cash to anyone <strong>in</strong><br />
the span of a few m<strong>in</strong>utes. Peer to Peer money transfers<br />
has been an area which has witnessed high growth and<br />
attention <strong>in</strong> the last few years.<br />
Almost 35 countries 02 have implemented or put the<br />
framework <strong>in</strong> place for real time payments. Recently,<br />
Australia has implemented its New Payments Platform 03 ;<br />
S<strong>in</strong>gle Euro payments <strong>in</strong> Europe 04 is envisaged to be a level<br />
breaker and the U.S. is on the br<strong>in</strong>k for adoption of real<br />
time payments.<br />
