Merchant Awards<br />

Northern Ireland 2016<br />

is Haldane Fisher,<br />

Coleraine..<br />

Other builders merchants to win<br />

awards are; JP Corry branches<br />

in Springfield Road, Belfast,<br />

Castlereagh and Bangor; Murdock<br />

Builders Merchants, Derry;<br />

Newry Building Supplies; NG Bell,<br />

Ballywalter and Haldane Fisher,<br />

Conlig.<br />

The awards were presented by<br />

Jonathan Bell MLA, Minister of<br />

Enterprise, Trade and Investment<br />

in the Hilton Belfast Hotel before<br />

an audience of almost 200 people<br />

representing the merchant and<br />

building industry.<br />

The building material<br />

manufacturers who organised the<br />

awards as Octabuild are: Gyproc,<br />

Dulux Paints, Glennon Brothers,<br />

Kingspan Insulation, Sanbra<br />

Fyffe, Tegral and Wavin. This is<br />

the fourth Octabuild Builders<br />

Merchant Awards in Northern<br />

Ireland.<br />

The awards judge, independent<br />

retail expert James Burke, was<br />

lavish in his praise of the high<br />

standard he found among all<br />

the builders merchants visited.<br />

He described the winners as<br />

exceptionally well-run businesses.<br />

He said that since the last awards<br />

in 2014 there was a stronger<br />

focus on sales growth structures<br />

and a greater focus on using<br />

digital media.In introducing the<br />

awards the Octabuild chairman<br />

Tadhg Donohoe said, “Merchants<br />

The overall winner, Haldane<br />

Fisher, Coleraine. Haldane<br />

Fisher in Coleraine, is one of<br />

10 branches in Northern Ireland<br />

of the family owned Haldane<br />

Fisher group. The Coleraine<br />

branch has been in operation<br />

since 2009 and currently<br />

employs 11 people. The judge<br />

complimented its energised sales<br />

process and very structured &<br />

results orientated team.<br />

which won the Customer<br />

Service Award is in business<br />

36 years. It employs 34 fulltime<br />

+ 2 part-time staff with<br />

an average 16 years service<br />

within the Bangor branch. It was<br />

commended for its dedicated<br />

separate plumbing centre for fast<br />

trade service and introduction of<br />

a new low cost finance option for<br />

customers.<br />

The three JP Corry branches<br />

who won category awards were<br />

Bangor (Business Focus<br />

Award); Castlereagh<br />

(Management Award) and<br />

Springfield Road, Belfast<br />

(Premises Award).<br />

JP Corry has been in business for<br />

over 200 years and has a network<br />

of 15 branches in Northern<br />

Ireland. The Bangor branch was<br />

described by the judge as having a<br />

very strong focus on sales growth.<br />

Castlereagh was described as a<br />

highly energised branch while<br />

the Springfield Road branch was<br />

lauded as one of the best laid out<br />

sites visited.<br />

winner of £500 worth of<br />

opening celebrations held at<br />

the store earlier in the month,<br />

the competition gave visitors<br />

the chance to win this generous<br />

prize, an impressive £500 worth<br />

of Brett Martin Cascade, the<br />

classic cast iron rainwater system<br />

alternative.<br />

Commenting on the prize<br />

Murdock Builders<br />

Merchants, Derry won the<br />

Multi-location branch<br />

award. It is 19 years in business<br />

and employs 18 Full-time staff<br />

and 3 part-time staff. The judge<br />

commented on its strong<br />

management respect for staff<br />

with a flexible approach to team<br />

building.<br />

Newry Building Supplies,<br />

which won the Innovation<br />

Award, is 33 years in business. It<br />

employs 30 full-time +5 part-time<br />

giveaway, Glenn Goodman, Brett<br />

Martin’s Sales Manager said:<br />

“We’re pleased to support JP<br />

Corry (Derry’s) new instore DIY<br />

shop by sponsoring the prize and<br />

congratulate Gregory on his win.”<br />
