42 UNEMPLOYMENT AND ITS CURE<br />

It would be a wise policy for Europe to give up the desire to<br />

export to the whole world. The white race has itself destroyed<br />

its world commerce. The European economy has lost its outlets<br />

in other continents. Our manufacturing costs prevent us<br />

from meeting foreign competition.<br />

Wherever it may be, we are so handicapped that it's impossible<br />

to gain a footing anywhere. For the few articles that<br />

foreigners still need, there's a cut-throat struggle between the<br />

suppliers. To gain access to these markets, one must pay such<br />

premiums that it represents a disproportionate effort for our<br />

economy. Only new inventions sometimes enable one to do a<br />

little business.<br />

To their misfortune, the English have industrialised India.<br />

Unemployment in England is increasing, and the English<br />

worker gets poorer.<br />

To think that there are millions of unemployed in America !<br />

What they should do there is to embark on a revolutionary<br />

new economic policy, abandon the gold standard and further<br />

increase the needs of their home market.<br />

Germany is the only country that has no unemployment.<br />

And that hangs together with the fact that we are not slaves to<br />

the need to export.<br />

The country we are engaged in conquering will be à source<br />

of raw materials for us, and a market for our products, but we<br />

shall take good care not to industrialise it.<br />

The peasant is the being least of all accessible to ideologies.<br />

If I offer him land in Russia, a river of human beings will rush<br />

there headlong. For a man of the soil, the finest country is the<br />

one that yields the finest crops. In twenty years' time, European<br />

emigration will no longer be directed towards America, but<br />

eastwards.<br />

The Black Sea will be for us a sea whose wealth our fishermen<br />

will never exhaust. Thanks to the cultivation of the soya<br />

bean, we'll increase our livestock. We'll win from that soil<br />

several times as much as the Ukrainian peasant is winning at<br />

present.<br />

We'll be freed from the worry of having to seek outlets for<br />

our goods in the Far East. For our market is in Russia. We<br />

must make sure of it. We'll supply cotton goods, household
