abandon any hope they had of starving us out. They have<br />

always cherished the hope that they would not have much<br />

difficulty, as in the first World War, of cutting us off from the<br />

rest of the world. But now, after Norway, the Channel Islands,<br />

and with their difficulties in the Far East, they have to sing a<br />

different tune.<br />

The war leader who takes no risks gains no prize.<br />

In the years immediately following our assumption of power<br />

many people were of the opinion that inflation was inevitable.<br />

The only ones who appreciated our policy were the workmen.<br />

For years I had been telling them : Your wages can only rise in<br />

proportion to the increase in your productivity.<br />

The less money a man has, the more common-sense he shows.<br />

The richest people are the least reasonable, and some are so<br />

stupid that they become misers! This tendency is generally<br />

are not done away with; casinos are marvellous institutions,<br />

and we must say to everyone with too much money : Gome on,<br />

you people, come and gamble!<br />

The whole of life is one perpetual hazard, and birth is the<br />

greatest hazard of them all. Every parent knows that his son<br />

is the most intelligent baby born, even after the first week : one<br />

tells that, of course, from the child's weight.<br />

Bureaucrats are often prone to take away all the joys of life<br />

from the people. When the soldiers bring something home with<br />

them from the Eastern front, it means an additional two<br />

hundred and fifty or three hundred thousand parcels—a very<br />

welcome addition to the home. It is absurd to say they should
