2016 Alabama State Nurses Association Annual Convention
Mary L. Hanks, MSN, RN, CNL, CNE
District 2
Views of the Issues: I think that the nursing profession is one of the most wonderful professions that there is and that few
in the public arena understand and fully appreciate. As a profession, we often live in the shadow of our medical brethren and
are seen by the public, and sometimes members of our profession, as unknowledgeable task-doers, and not the autonomous
critical-thinkers, decision-makers, policy-builders, and educators that many of us are. Though I have not been as actively
involved in the ASNA as I should, I look forward to serving in any capacity that I can to move the nursing profession toward
in our state. Nurses need to embrace our place in the health care environment and help the public understand the vital role
that we play. Embracing our roles as professionals and education future nurses to own their professionalism is a major issue
for nurses that I strongly advocate. Another area that is important for the nursing profession to embrace is advancement of
nursing education beyond the AND degree. I think the AND is a wonderful place to begin, but that most nurses should be
encouraged and supported in advancing their degree. Thank you for your consideration.
