Last Minute Substitution: September Board Meeting
By Carey Spreen September 7, 2016
egion Vice President
R
David Robertson, filling
in for President Jim
Falgout, began the
meeting at 7:00 pm.
David began with the Treasurer’s
report. All told, the Region has
just over $140,000 cash on hand
as of the end of August. Treasurer
Rich Solomon has made a final
payment to MotorSport Ranch for
the September Drivers’ Ed event, as
well as an IRS filing payment, and
has sent invoices to all Slipstream
advertisers. He noted that we need
to have a discussion about Hope
Shelter proceeds for this Christmas,
and that we have only received
$1000 in charity lap proceeds from
Hill Country Region, held during
the May COTA Club Race/DE. We
have not received any proceeds
from the Club Race/DE event itself.
David continued with the report
from Membership Chair John Hamilton,
stating that Region membership
is at 2,577 (1,694 primary and
883 affiliate) members, down a bit
from our all-time high of 2,582 last
month. John says that we are still
showing growth, and that the Internet
photo frames that Bill Orr has
set up at various locations in the Metroplex
are helping already.
David also gave us the report
from Time Trial Chair Travis Howard,
who tells us that the final Time
Trial of 2016 will be held on Sunday,
Sept 18, on the 1.3-mile course at
MotorSport Ranch, and is almost
full already.
Slipstream Content Editor Carey
Spreen noted that the Portal to Texas
History group from University
of North Texas, with whom the Region
has contracted to digitize our
complete archive of Slipstream, has
taken delivery of the archive and
has begun work on it. Concurrently,
Ussery Printing has shown interest
in creating PDFs of Slipstream for the
previous 17 or so years, which would
save the Region some money. Carey
will continue to follow the status of
the project.
Calendar Boy Brendan Eagan assured
us that the on-line calendar
is up to date. Brendan is also looking
for someone to replace him, so
if you are interested, contact him
at calendar@mavpca.org or let our
Volunteer Chair Jimmy Gallegos
know at volunteers@mavpca.org.
Safety Chair Joe McGlohen introduced
incoming Safety Co-Chair
Wayne Elliot. Wayne is a retired
civil engineer and is excited to be
able to fill a much-needed position
in the club. Welcome Wayne! Joe
noted that he would like to put on
a fire school at MotorSport Ranch
for corner workers and anyone else
interested in race safety.
Monthly Social Chair Stephanie
Ho told us that there were about
120 attendees at the July Social at
Hard Eight Barbecue in Coppell,
while the August event at the Embassy
Suites in Frisco had about 90
participants. September’s event, the
F. Porsche birthday celebration, will
have limited seating, and requires
RSVPs. By contrast, the October Social,
with an Oktoberfest theme, will
be at Uncle Buck’s in Grapevine,
where we’ll have a banquet room
and a bartender all to ourselves!
PCA Tours Chair Tom Martin
told us that there are two tours remaining
for 2016: the September
25 tour to MotorSport Ranch, and
the October 15 tour to Rancho
Sereno. For September, he is asking
participants to bring a $25 Walmart
gift card in exchange for driving ontrack
parade laps. He has also found
a caterer for the Rancho Sereno
tour at a great per-person price. He
and PCA Tours Co-Chair Bill Orr
are working on the 2017 tour schedule
now.
Drivers’ Education Chair Chris
Tabor delivered 100 $50 discount
coupons to Tom, for distribution to
the participants in the MotorSport
Ranch tour, to encourage participation
from members who are uncertain
about entering a DE. Chris
would like to implement a Track
Night series for 2017. The format
is not finalized, but could be a leadfollow
program, with entrants following
an instructor on track. Chris
admitted that a two-day DE can be
a big commitment for someone new
to the sport, hence the idea for oneday
or one-evening formats. He will
need volunteer assistance with these
events. Chris and Mark Schnoerr
also discussed coming up with ways
to involve Mavericks who own Cayennes
and Macans, perhaps something
off-road, or possibly a “how
much will it hold” charity event.
Lastly, Chris reported that the 2017
DE dates are set, all at MotorSport
Ranch.
Advertising Chair Bill Kruder
reported that he is signing up new
advertisers for Slipstream, and is
working on attracting national advertisers
as well. Bill is also comparing
advertising rates with surrounding
Zone 5 Regions to see if our
rates are comparable. Raising rates
would allow us to print an all-color
Slipstream, which should be more attractive
to advertisers as well as our
readers.
Slipstream Managing Editor Jim
Hirsch advised that we are currently
printing 1,900 copies per month.
Advertising is still at roughly 55%
of total content. As a reminder, Jim
is always looking for potential cover
photos, ideally in “portrait” (vertical)
format, containing both people
and Porsches. We are also looking
for someone who can design and
produce our event ads.
Autocross Chair Mark Schnoerr
reviewed the August and September
events. PCA members comprise 10
to 15% of the entrants, and Equipe
Rapide likes having us there. For the
September event, Bill Orr arranged
for an ice cream truck to be present,
calling it Cars & Cones, and it was
so successful that the truck owner
gave us a $75 reimbursement. Several
members new to autocrossing
showed up to watch, and Mark’s
wife Sigrid was able to find competitors
to give them rides around
the course at speed. Most said that
they would be back for the November
event! There are two events in
October, and the final event in November,
called Guns & Hoses, will
donate proceeds to charity, and will
include the participation of various
police and fire departments.
Bill Orr reported that he has
placed more Internet photo frames,
including one at MotorSport Ranch,
and is working on placing one at
Porsche Plano. He is working with
Charlie Davis on the existing Region
Logo designs. David Robertson
added that the Board will be voting
on the final logo design at the October
board meeting, and it will be
unveiled at the Annual Celebration.
