Happy Hour at Champps Americana by Tinker Edwards The regular Happy Hour in May was held on Thursday the 17th at Champps Americana on Beltline in Addison. The day before the Happy Hour, I receive a phone call from Dennis Chamberlain. His voice had a tone of concern wondering if he did the right thing by inviting a "guest" to our happy hour. I assured him it wouldn't be a problem. Dennis is a conservative CPA, very laid back so I couldn't understand his concern about his "guest." Well, it's happy hour day and I am waiting to meet our invited "guest"(I have to admit I made Dennis tell me who it was). I'm trying very hard to not stare when the invited "guest" arrives, as you can see from the photo it was none other than “Cher” aka Karen Kelley. I had to leave early that evening but I understand she did sing for the group! Besides Cher, we had Sandy and Mike Lapp join us from the Houston Region along with new members Ford Howland, Mike Billinghausen, and Tom Widmer. Also, Steven and April Dodd found us on the web while looking for a 911 and decided to check us out. We’re glad they did! Moonlight at the Oasis by Mike Oakes Yes, Virginia, there is life south of I-30! At the beginning of May, we decided to do something a little different for a Thursday night Happy Hour. We headed south to the Oasis restaurant on Joe Pool Lake in Grand Prairie. The evening started out overcast, which didn't bode well for later planned activities (more on that later), but there were no damp spirits at the Oasis bar. At least 15 to 20 Mavericks filled up the entire bar area, including new member Bill Rosenberg, and reactivated members Ed and Kim Vanderveen. I won't try to list all the attendees as I'm sure I'll forget a few, but I will mention that it was good to see some of my fellow southern DFW residents such as Keith Bird and Bob Morris who were glad to have a short drive to a Maverick event. We still had plenty of the Happy Hour regulars, and I think Karen Pederson probably took the long-distance award, driving in from McKinney (luckily she didn't know where the Oasis was when she set out, otherwise I don't know if she would have made the trip). After a dinner of fried catfish & hushpuppies (there was other food, but who cares?), a devoted group set out for the aforementioned night activity. The Oasis sits adjacent to the dam on the northern end of Joe Pool Lake. There is a closed road along the top of the dam, which is perfect for running, biking, or blading. It is especially nice under a full moon. Luckily, the weather gods were good to us, and the clouds had cleared out nicely. After inspecting the Cochran's Boxster S missile defense system, an intrepid band set out for a moonlight blade/stroll, with myself and Keith Bird braving the in-line skates, and Bob Benson, Tinker Edwards, and John and Suzanne Cochran taking to tennis-shoes. Although Bob and Tinker swear there was not a lake out there, Keith and I know better - you just have to walk a little farther. Luckily there were no casualties, and after a great night of food, fun and fellowship, we all headed back to our cars, only to find a wayward Maverick wandering the parking lot in his 911, looking for the party (name withheld to protect the innocent, okay Ofer?).
