Maverick’s First TMS Club Race A Huge Success
By Wendy Shoffit, Linda Bambina, and Lanean Hughes
Texas Motor Speedway was "too fast" for CART to race, but not
for PCA Porsches! The Maverick Region Club Race/Drivers'
Education event on October 12-14 attracted enthusiastic drivers from
14 states on a nearly perfect weather weekend outside of the Dallas/Ft.
Worth Metroplex. We had 110 cars (combined Club Race & DE drivers)
and at times over 100 spectators. We fed a total of 270 people at
the Awards Dinner that Saturday evening.
Autobahn Motorcars of Fort Worth provided a beautiful Red
2002 Boxster as a Pace Car, and their customers enjoyed a 20-minute
set with instructors driving their cars on the NASCAR Oval and Road
Course. Many thanks go to the tireless workers, and the strong participation
of our sponsors.
Each day we offered laps around the course at lunchtime for
donations to charity. The Charity Lap on Sunday came "full circle" on
the oval and collected $1,100. The money will be evenly split between
our own club charity, The Hope Shelter, and the Fireman's Fund of
New York, at the suggestion of Brian Barr, a former Maverick member
and current Club Racer.
On Friday night, the CR National Crew and some Maverick
members enjoyed dinner at the Speedway Club and were dazzled with
a fabulous Texas-sized "lightning show!"
For the very first PCA Club Race at the TMS venue, we deemed
it a huge success. The drivers were thrilled with the exciting track and
had a great time. There were lots of promises to be back in 2002, when
Maverick Region will again be hosting another event at TMS on
Memorial Day weekend. Mark your calendars now!
The “full circle” charity lap was enjoyed by all,
even if we weren’t allowed up on the high banks.
