Prez Says<br />

January is typically a slow month for<br />

Maverick Region. We all need a chance to<br />

recover from the holidays and regroup<br />

before the full year of events gets into high gear.<br />

We did have a couple of lunches, a Happy<br />

Hour, a Tech Session at Park Place, and a Rally<br />

School (so maybe it wasn’t that slow after all!).<br />

Personally, Wendy and I had our annual ski<br />

trip to Whistler. That is the #1 ski resort in North America (or so<br />

they claim) and is about 2 hours north of Vancouver, BC. We were<br />

so excited to go because the prior month had been uncharacteristicly<br />

snowy for the area. They had received 6 feet of snow in just<br />

a few weeks. But the weather didn’t hold out for us. They had a<br />

warm front blow through which brought temperatures into the<br />

40s and rain! We only ended up with one good day of skiing. Not<br />

all was lost – we had good friends and Wendy’s brother and his<br />

family to spend time with. We also got to try snowmobiling. What<br />

a blast! We had a very good time overall, but I am still longing for<br />

another ski trip this spring – and I doubt I will have the time to<br />

satisfy that urge.<br />

I have had a few volunteers come forward for helping with<br />

the PCA information boards – many thanks to those who did. We<br />

still need one for Autobahn in Fort Worth. If you think you could<br />

visit the shop maybe once a month, feel free to let me know!<br />

We had another volunteer come forward and offer to help<br />

organize a tour (Feb. 9) to Granbury for Boxster owners. Robert<br />

Bianconi is a longtime PCA member and relatively new Boxster<br />

owner (you may remember him from his work on the One Lap of<br />

DFW charity event last year). He is trying to bridge the gap<br />

between Boxster owners that aren’t members of PCA and those<br />

that are. This is a slightly different market that we are trying to<br />

adjust to. The Boxster was much-heralded on the internet before<br />

it was released, and the long waits for delivery caused the explosive<br />

growth of internet fan sites and discussion boards. So they<br />

developed a community of future Boxster owners before their<br />

cars had even arrived!<br />

Many of them are PCA members, but many are not. We want<br />

to expand our services to meet their wants and needs, since we<br />

feel that the more people we can include, the better the club as a<br />

whole will be. We have been discussing these issues with various<br />

Boxster owners for quite some time now, and we finally have a<br />

volunteer that is eager to get these events going! Thanks, Bob!<br />

There are lots of driving events coming up – Ladies, if you<br />

ever even considered coming to an Autocross, the ladies-only<br />

autocross school is coming up very quickly (Feb. 17)! And if you<br />

have NOT considered coming to one – just show up and watch!<br />

The Maverick Region Porsche Club opens the <strong>2002</strong> Autocross Season with our<br />

"Intro to Autocross” & “Ladies Only Intro to Autocross” schools!<br />

Anyone interested in driving, instructing or volunteering at this event should email ax@mavpca.org immediately to get on<br />

board. Instructors and workers will get free timed fun runs at the end of the day! This is your chance to drive your car at our<br />

new Pennington Field location before the season starts!!!<br />

This year's school will be held <strong>February</strong> 16th at the Pennington Field Stadium parking lot in Bedford, Texas. If you attended,<br />

worked or instructed at last year's school, you know that this is the perfect way to start the new season off right! Our Intro<br />

School is designed specifically for the first time or novice autocrosser. Class sizes will be kept small so each student will have<br />

their own instructor for the entire day! Our instructors are there to walk you through the entire process of having fun at a<br />

Maverick Region Autocross. Our own Maverick Ladies will be instructing on Sunday!<br />

The skills you can learn at our Autocross Series of events can help you become a safer, more confident driver in the real world.<br />

Autocrossing is a safe, fun and addictive way to enjoy your car. The best way to get started autocrossing is to attend our AX 101<br />

School. We will start the day with a brief classroom discussion that will focus on safety, car control and autocrossing basics. Then<br />

you'll meet your driving instructor and by the end of the day you will have learned how to;<br />

Register for an event • Get your car tech'd • How to walk a course • How to work a corner • How to prepare your car and yourself<br />

Where to grid your car • How to drive a lap • Where to get your lap times<br />

Besides getting to drive several instructed laps on an actual autocross course . . . you’ll get to practice:<br />

Threshold braking • Regular, increasing and decreasing slaloms • Clockwise and counter-clockwise skidpads<br />

Pre-registration is required and space is extremely limited. Last year's school sold out quickly. The first twenty spots are<br />

first come-first served. If any additional spots become available later, they will be given to Maverick Region members first, then<br />

other Porsche owners and then to all other applicants. One to one student/instructor ratios will be maintained. A waiting list<br />

will be kept and entry decisions will be based on prior driving experience.<br />

Because I Said So<br />

Isit here at my computer late on the night<br />

before I’m to have the newsletter proof read<br />

and brought to the printer. I’m trying to find<br />

something witty to talk about and coming up<br />

with nothing. James already talked about our ski<br />

trip, where we *finally* went snowmobiling<br />

(after I badgered him for 5 long years). He<br />

already mentioned the upcoming AX 101 and<br />

Ladies AX school. Not only that, he mentioned getting one more<br />

lone volunteer to help out once a month to distribute <strong>Slipstream</strong>s<br />

to a dealership.<br />

Then it hits me, I ask myself why I used the term “lone volunteer?”<br />

Why do those words overwhelm me with<br />

sadness? I should feel happy that someone, anyone, stepped<br />

forward to help out. But I’m not happy. I’m sad because in a club<br />

with nearly 1000 members, we celebrate the one single person<br />

who decides to lessen the load of someone else.<br />

Frankly, I’m growing weary of asking, begging, or demanding<br />

volunteers. After all, this is supposed to be a fun thing to do!<br />

We belong to the best club in the world and drive the finest automobile<br />

I can think of. All of us have lives outside of the club. We<br />

are all dedicated to our families and our jobs. Yet I wonder what<br />

personality trait it is that compels some of us to step forward and<br />

do a job that no one else seems to want to do. Which job am I<br />

talking about? Pick one... It’s not just the ones that take a lot of<br />

time and energy to do, it’s even the easier ones. We all enjoy the<br />

The first board meeting of the New Year was<br />

called to order at 7:00 PM at the home of<br />

Wendy and James Shoffit. James quickly<br />

informed us that he did not have an agenda and<br />

immediately lost control of the meeting.<br />

After regaining control the first item up is the<br />

now ongoing debate on what to do about the<br />

Maverick Region Logo in light of the request from<br />

Porsche Cars North America that we cease all unapproved usage of the<br />

Porsche crest and Porsche name including all goodie store merchandise<br />

and printed materials. After much discussion regarding our<br />

options for modifying the current MR PCA logo, motions were<br />

passed to remove the Porsche crest from the MR logo and, that a<br />

request for licensed usage of the Porsche crest be made to PCNA in<br />

hopes of returning the MR logo back to its original image. If such an<br />

agreement cannot be made then it will be up to the direction of the<br />

MR Board as to whether or not to leave the modified logo in place or<br />

pursue a redesign.<br />

Lanean gave an update on the DE activities planned for <strong>2002</strong>.<br />

Everything is rolling along and expectations are to fill all available<br />

slots. Also, Lanean shared a touching letter of thanks from the Hope<br />

Shelter staff address to the MR club for all the support and donations<br />

throughout the years.<br />

events this club puts on. We take pride that Maverick Region puts<br />

on a heckuva show, no matter in what venue...Club Races, DEs,<br />

Rallies, Tours, Autocrosses, Time Trials, Happy Hours, Dinner<br />

Socials, etc. Whatever this region touches turns to gold. It’s just<br />

how we do things.<br />

Can you imagine what would happen if one of those key<br />

organizers decided they had had enough? They no longer had time<br />

to do what they’d been doing for years? After all, they had a family<br />

and a job that needed their attention. They didn’t have time for<br />

Maverick Region. We would all suffer. But, do you know what?<br />

Most of the people I know wouldn’t do that. They *find* the time<br />

and make that commitment. They’re not afraid of taking on a task<br />

they’ve never done before. They ask lots of questions and get lots<br />

of answers from the others who had taken on that task before them<br />

and were now onto another, different task. Look closely at the<br />

board page and see how many duplicate names there are.<br />

Every club goes through this very same problem. How to ask<br />

members to put aside their “real” lives for even a brief time to give<br />

of themselves to others. I wish I knew the answer. Maybe if you ask<br />

50 times, you might just get another lone volunteer. I wonder,<br />

how many times am I on now? I’ve lost count.<br />

Thank you to every single volunteer who has helped Maverick<br />

Region and the Porsche Club become what it is today. If this has<br />

Joel Nannis has volunteered to coordinate a tour to the<br />

International Exotic Feline Sanctuary on March 30, watch for the<br />

ad and details in next month’s <strong>Slipstream</strong>.<br />

Kevin Hardison reminded everyone that the new member<br />

party is coming up on <strong>February</strong> 3 at which discount coupons for<br />

the <strong>February</strong> AX School will be given to new members that attend<br />

the party. Kevin reported that the AX School is coming together<br />

and that he is looking for volunteers to help out email ax@mavpca.org<br />

to volunteer or for more information.<br />

Safety and Logistics Chairman, Joe McGlohen, requested and<br />

the board approve a motion to purchase 4 flag sets for use at MR<br />

sponsored Club Race events. With a conclusion of business for this<br />

month, the meeting was brought to close. As always, check the web<br />

site for the most current information about what is happening with<br />

your Porsche Club.<br />

Remembering John Clever<br />

By Rik Larson, Sacramento Valley Region, and Jack Carpenter, Diablo Region<br />

John Clever, a noted rallyist and PCA member for almost 41 years,<br />

passed away on January 11, <strong>2002</strong>. John was a dear friend,<br />

rally partner, competitor, and rally master. He was an active<br />

contributor on the regional, zone, and national level. He received the<br />

PCA Enthusiast award in 1975 from the national organization.<br />

John had attended many Porsche Parades and was very<br />

proud to be one of the last people to sit down when it came time<br />

to do the 'count up' at the Porsche Parades. John was the driving<br />

force to having the 45th Porsche Parade being headquartered in<br />

Sacramento and was the original chairperson. His many friends<br />

will miss John.<br />

Diablo Region and PCA have lost an outstanding and dedicated<br />

member.<br />

John Clever had a heart attack this week and, like five years ago,<br />

came home from the hospital early on January 11th in good sprits. So<br />

good, in fact, that he phoned Judy Schreib and told her he would<br />

probably go to Coco's for breakfast on Saturday, as usual. I am very<br />

sorry to say that John had another heart attack later in the evening of<br />

January 11th, and this time he didn't pull through.<br />

PCA and Diablo Region in particular have lost one of the most<br />

active and dedicated members I know in this or any other region. His<br />

list of credits and accomplishments while a member of PCA would be<br />

very difficult if not impossible to duplicate. John attended more<br />

Parades, won more rallies, led more tours, put on more rallies,<br />

and attended more social events than anyone I know. In addition to<br />

his leadership as a nationally recognized rallymaster, John was a<br />

charter member of the Diablo Region who held many elective offices,<br />

including numerous terms as a Director and President.<br />

John had an engineering degree and worked on many projects,<br />

ranging from those assigned by the City Engineers Office in Walnut<br />

Creek to the missile complex at Vandenberg AFB. He also referred to<br />

himself as a farmer from Tracy who loved Porsches.<br />

Well, we love you too, John, and we will all miss you very much.<br />

January 27th at 2 pm to be held at the family farm in Tracy, CA.<br />

and I almost didn’t<br />

make it! Traffic, traffic, traffic<br />

*#@!@$#$# (can *%!*#@ be said in<br />

print?) between North Dallas and the<br />

mid-cities and holiday travelers to<br />

DFW airport and Christmas shoppers<br />

everywhere… what was I thinking<br />

when I scheduled this happy hour! I<br />

guess I was thinking we had such a great time at Carrabba’s in August<br />

with a fantastic turnout from the midcities, why not try it again and<br />

again we had another big turnout!<br />

Future happy hour chairperson Dennis Chamberlain and his<br />

special guest, Stephanie Nix were caught in the traffic but managed to<br />

join us in time for dinner. It was a real treat to have Ed Mayo join us<br />

for his first happy hour although he tried to find a few excuses not to<br />

come, he came, he mingled and I think enjoyed himself? Also we met<br />

new member Richard Voreis, return new member Peter Weyandt and<br />

future new members Monda Degan and George Whitaker.<br />

Two years ago I started the Happy Hours under the New<br />

Members Mentor Program to get more new members involved. I<br />

really have enjoyed every minute of it but it is time to pass the torch<br />

or steering wheel on to someone else for fresh ideas and new places to<br />

visit. So now we have Dennis Chamberlain and his crew – Mark Gluck<br />

and Dee Lersch - to “steer” us on to more fun places.<br />

like Cher or Stephanie Nix . . .<br />

I know I will leave someone out but I do want to thank Ben Witry<br />

and Ruben Muro who were my original co-chairs and thanks to the<br />

Tires and the Seat of your Pants<br />

Let's talk about the ultimate characteristic that sets a really<br />

skilled driver apart from the norm. The fastest drivers all share<br />

certain attributes to one degree or another; fearlessness,<br />

"natural ability,"concentration, experience, good equipment, etc.<br />

But there is one characteristic that sets the Schumacher's and the<br />

Senna's of this world apart: FEEL. This is not an exclusive trait, and<br />

it can be learned by anyone; the level of one's drive and goals<br />

notwithstanding. This is the trait we are ultimately trying to develop<br />

in ourselves, as without it, a driver will never be as one with his or<br />

her means of conveyance and the stretch of road in question.<br />

Do some people inherently have a better sense of feel than<br />

others? Good question. Perhaps it would be more accurate to state<br />

that certain individuals possess a higher innate sensibility where the<br />

dynamics of road feel are concerned. In the end, anyone can<br />

improve in this regard. Some just have to try harder. Improved feel<br />

for the road also generally leads to a heightened sense of overall<br />

awareness. That's really what Driver's Ed. is all about.<br />

You might have heard it said that a driver's most sensitive organ<br />

must be his or her backside. This is not as flippant as it may initially<br />

sound. One's nether regions, in conjunction with the ears, eyes,<br />

hands, and a healthy dose of intuition born of experience, make up<br />

the proverbial "seat of the pants" feel that we are striving for.<br />

Without it, one can never progress beyond merely driving<br />

well mechanically. How can we accelerate our acquisition of this<br />

all-important sense?<br />

At this juncture, I want to focus on one basic component of<br />

feel, and lend some advice for the novice Driver's Ed. student. Let's<br />

talk tires. Tires are a big part of what we do on the track. I might<br />

imagine that drivers spend more time discussing tires and their<br />

effective deployment than any other topic. This has the unfortunate<br />

tendency of making people, particularly the novice, believe that tires<br />

are the most important part of the driving equation. If one has<br />

progressed to the higher levels of performance driving, then tires are<br />

indeed a valid concern. However, to start thinking about the "fastest<br />

tire" before one has learned the how and why of their usage will<br />

actually retard one's learning of the most important lessons;<br />

mainly that of feel and car control.<br />

As previously stated, the goal of Driver's Ed. is to teach you car<br />

control. You will coincidentally develop a greater sense of feel, and a<br />

heightened sense of what the car is doing and what it needs in order<br />

to go faster in a smoother and safer fashion. There are many things<br />

that contribute to the learning of feel: how deeply padded your<br />

seats are, how stiff the suspension, whether your tires squeal a lot,<br />

etc. However, how much cornering grip your tires have is the<br />

biggest factor.<br />

Unless one is Idiot Savant, one cannot play Chopin without<br />

learning where the notes are on the keyboard. You can't learn to<br />

drive well by going fast first! You need to learn what to do, and what<br />

the car will do, gradually, and the easiest most effective way to<br />

accomplish this is to do it at a speed that will allow you to access<br />

your and your car's limits repeatedly. A speed where you reach the<br />

abyss...and learn through experience how to return from it safely. A<br />

speed that won't land you in deep do-do without your knowing<br />

how to wield the shovel first! It's in the tires, you know?<br />

R-compound tires are great fun and allow you to really fly, but<br />

you have to earn those wings. Below the R-tire's limits, they will lull<br />

you unto a false sense of security and make up for many inappropriate<br />

driving habits. When you push it, the super-high grip of these<br />

tires is accompanied by a more sudden loss of that grip; they are far<br />

less forgiving than street tires. On top of that, if you've got the tires<br />

without the talent, you won't have the ingrained instinctual<br />

reactions available to help you deal with sudden cornering distress.<br />

Think of some of the great drivers: A.J. Foyt, Mario Andretti,<br />

Jeff Gordon. They cut their teeth on dirt tracks where sliding is<br />

control. Most every F-1 and CART pilote has at least some karting<br />

experience -- the better the driver, likely the more karting he's done.<br />

Learning with a car that moves around a lot will speed your<br />

ascension into the ranks of the skilled drivers. Street tires allow a car<br />

to slide around a lot compared to their R-compound siblings. The<br />

lessons learned while sliding about are as important to the equation<br />

as making sure the car has gas. If you've been coveting a set of<br />

R1s...wait. Learn how to boil water before you try your hand at<br />

real cooking.<br />

Holiday Party<br />

I’ve been going to the Maverick Region holiday parties for probably<br />

4 years now. I have *never* seen as large of a crowd attend<br />

as I did this year. I would estimate that nearly 200 people made<br />

an appearance. I’ve wondered why this year so many came. Maybe<br />

it was everyone feeling the need to connect and feel safe with<br />

friends and family. I, personally, was having a difficult time this<br />

year getting into the “swing” of the holiday season. Something just<br />

didn’t feel right. Lots of people around me seemed to be experiencing<br />

the same thing. I guess coming to a party made it a little easier<br />

to feel joy and the holiday spirit. Either that or the promise of<br />

but when I saw there was very little left, I decided it had to be safe<br />

and tried some. I was glad I did and, boy, was I sorry I had waited<br />

so long! It was wonderful. Mavericks are certainly a talented bunch<br />

of cooks. I wonder what we’ll all come up with next year...<br />

Whatever it was that brought them, the party-goers had a<br />

great time! The home of Lee and Linda Wilkins is just stunning and<br />

the perfect setting for our gathering. It was decorated beautifully,<br />

including an enormous Christmas tree. If only I could get *my*<br />

house to look that good! We were all very sad to not see Linda’s<br />

smiling face that evening as she was not feeling well. I’m sure Lee<br />

could have used her help! I think hosting duties were quite challenging!<br />

Fortunately, there were quite a few Maverick ladies who<br />

gladly pitched in to make the hosting job easier. Lee and helpers did<br />

a wonderful job!<br />

Of course, the food that everyone brought was to die for!<br />

There were more varieties of desserts than I’d ever seen. From<br />

cookies to cakes, brownies to cheesecake. The most unusual dessert<br />

award, however, goes to Jack Wales who brought a custard dish prepared<br />

in a pumpkin gourd. I was intimidated by it for a little while,<br />

. . . I decided it had to be safe . . .<br />

In addition to everyone needing to bring a side dish to the<br />

party, the entry fee included a new or slightly loved stuffed animal<br />

for the Hope Shelter. That evening we collected over 100 animals<br />

for the kids! Not only did we collect all those toys, some people<br />

brought other items to take to the shelter. We had planned a trip<br />

there for the following day. It all worked out nicely.<br />

Jasmine Shoffit and Geneva Spreen had a ball together.<br />

Jasmine also seemed to have a fabulous time. She and Geneva<br />

Spreen played and played to their hearts’ content. No sooner did we<br />

pull out of the driveway that night and Jasmine was out like a light.<br />

I love it when I can spend a great evening talking to so many<br />

good friends, eating delicious food, and having my daughter<br />

snoozing on the way home, with a huge smile on her face!<br />

Thanks so much to Lee and Linda Wilkins for once again<br />

opening up their home to the Maverick Region members and<br />

helping restore their holiday spirits. I hope we all have a much<br />

happier <strong>2002</strong>.<br />

Valve Covers: Early 911<br />

One of the most common problems with the older 911 is the<br />

occurrence of major oil leaks. While some oil leaks are<br />

harder to fix than others, the oil leaks that originate from<br />

the 911 valve covers are very easy to fix. From 1968-77 the upper<br />

valve covers were magnesium. While very lightweight, there is a<br />

coefficient of thermal expansion mismatch between the cam tower<br />

and the valve covers. In other words, when the engine heats up, the<br />

valve covers expand at a different rate than the cam towers. This<br />

causes the magnesium covers to warp, and subsequently leak. It is<br />

this leak from the valve covers that is very common on the older<br />

cars.<br />

If your SC or Carrera is leaking from the bottom covers, the<br />

Turbo valve covers that are reinforced will help prevent this leak.<br />

Since this is a very common upgrade, it may have already been performed<br />

on your car. Check to see if your covers have been upgraded<br />

before you order a new set. The newer ones are all aluminum,<br />

and the lower covers have fins that criss-cross the outer surface.<br />

. . . a good chance that you will have<br />

a major oil spill if you don’t . . .<br />

To see if your car is suffering from valve cover leaks, take a look<br />

under the car and check the bottom of both the left and right valve<br />

covers. If there are oil drips there, as well as oil on your heat<br />

exchangers, there is a good chance that your covers are leaking.<br />

Check the ones on top too, from within the engine compartment.<br />

These are also very prone to leaking. A good way to check for leaks<br />

is to clean the entire engine. You can clean the bottom of the engine<br />

by taking it to a self-serve car wash that has a degreaser setting on<br />

the nozzle. Don't spray any water inside the engine compartment, as<br />

there are many things in there that you just don't want to get wet.<br />

Instead, use some degreaser on a rag to wipe out the inside of your<br />

engine compartment. Please don't dump any degreaser on your<br />

driveway, as this pollutes the environment.<br />

If you suspect that your valve covers are leaking, then simply<br />

remove them from the engine and check to see if they are warped. If<br />

you place the magnesium valve covers on a flat surface, you can<br />

check to see if they are warped or not. Even if they don't appear to<br />

be warped, remember that they will deform when they are heated by<br />

the motor. If the valve covers are warped, then you should definitely<br />

replace them.<br />

The standard upgrade is to replace the valve covers with late 911<br />

Turbo valve covers. This is a bolt-on replacement for 911 owners. Make<br />

sure that you empty the motor of oil before you remove the valve covers,<br />

as there is a good chance that you will have a major oil spill if you<br />

don't. The Turbo valve covers are made of aluminum, and will expand<br />

at the same rate as the cam towers, thus decreasing the amount of<br />

warpage. The upper valve cover looks very similar to the original magnesium<br />

one, except for the fact that it is unpainted. The lower valve<br />

cover has fins to improve cooling and also increase stiffness.<br />

If you own a 914-6 or are performing a 914-6 conversion, you<br />

need to machine down a section of the lower valve covers on both<br />

sides in order to have them clear the rear trailing arms. If you don't<br />

do this, then you will not be able to remove the covers without<br />

either removing the studs from the cam towers, or dropping the<br />

engine. The fins must be machined down about a quarter of an inch<br />

in order to accommodate the rear trailing arms of the 914.<br />

Machining the covers will not hurt them, and they will still function<br />

very well.<br />

When you install the Turbo valve covers, make sure that you<br />

use a new set of valve cover gaskets, screws and washers. The valve<br />

cover kit comes complete with all the nuts, washers and gaskets. It is<br />

important not to over-torque the nuts on the valve covers. I was not<br />

able to locate a torque specification in the factory manuals, but I<br />

would not torque them greater than 8 ft-lbs. Make sure that you<br />

torque them down in a diagonal pattern, and it is advised to start at<br />

4 ft-lbs., and then after all of them are tight, re-torque to 8 ft-lbs.<br />

Well, that's about it. It's a really easy upgrade that should stop<br />

one of the most annoying leaks on a 911. No more smoke coming<br />

out of the rear of the car as the heat exchangers burn off excess oil!<br />

I’m Marrying a Maverick<br />

Before I met my fiance’, Brian Scudder, I thought a Maverick<br />

was a basketball player in Dallas, but after a year of attending<br />

DE’s, Club Races and Happy Hours I now know the<br />

truth…Mavericks are unique individuals with a passion for<br />

Porsches unequaled in the United States.<br />

My first Maverick event was the <strong>February</strong> 2001 DE at<br />

Motorsport Ranch. Brian had to be there at an ungodly early<br />

hour so I told him I would meet him after my hair appointment<br />

that morning. I arrived, perfectly coifed, only to be greeted by a<br />

howling cross wind that cut like a knife and left me disheveled. I<br />

went to the wall to watch Brian drive and was witness to what<br />

came to be known as the “full Scudder”. Wow, I thought, this driving<br />

stuff is cool, I’m going to like this! Unfortunately/fortunately<br />

I have yet to witness another full Scudder.<br />

My second major Porsche event was the Lone Star Region’s<br />

Club Race at Texas World Speedway in March 2001. This was<br />

Brian’s first Club Race and the excitement of seeing him on the<br />

track was equaled only by the excitement of trying to keep his 928<br />

running long enough to get him on the track. It was here that I<br />

learned that girlfriends are pit crews and as one wily racer told us<br />

“you’ve got to keep the women hungry, then they work harder<br />

and faster so you’ll get done and they can have a meal”.<br />

A recent post on the MRPCA Yahoo groups list was entitled<br />

your wife where you’d like to go on your vacation she answers<br />

‘Why…is there a race there?’” Brian’s second Club Race was at<br />

Putnam Park in beautiful Mt. Meridian, Indiana. This was the<br />

destination of our first vacation together in June 2001. I should<br />

have known when I was asked if I would like to visit family in<br />

Illinois and Indiana for our vacation that Brian had a race in<br />

mind too. But that’s okay because I learned valuable information<br />

at Putnam Park. It was there that I met a racer’s wife named Peggy<br />

who proudly showed off her diamond jewelry collection and<br />

related how each piece was a direct result of her husband’s<br />

Porsche purchases.<br />

The culmination of our racing season occurred in October at<br />

the Maverick Region’s Club Race at Texas Motor Speedway. Brian<br />

was the chair of the event and also a racer so the tension was palpable.<br />

Between the logistics, the unwieldy chicane and the mysterious<br />

problems in the 928 that caused it to stall repeatedly on the<br />

track, we somehow survived and breathed a sigh of relief when it<br />

was finally over and had been a success. Now that Brian had time<br />

to think clearly again, he came to his senses and proposed in<br />

November. I thought it was odd when he chose not to attend the<br />

Founder’s Day dinner, but he had a more romantic setting in<br />

mind for popping the question.<br />

Once our families had been given the news we talked about<br />

setting a date. My first thought was September 28th (get it? 9-28!)<br />

but we couldn’t wait that long and started looking at dates in May.<br />

Believe it or not, we did set our wedding date around driving<br />

events so that our good friends in the Porsche Club wouldn’t have<br />

a conflict. Hey, we’re not naïve, we know we wouldn’t be first<br />

choice! We toyed briefly with having the reception at TMS, and<br />

we joked about registering at The Porsche Store. If it weren’t<br />

for the roll cage we might have wanted to drive the race car<br />

to the reception. We also<br />

planned the honeymoon<br />

so we’d be back in time<br />

for the Club Race over<br />

Memorial Weekend. Once<br />

we’re married and the<br />

Porsches are “ours,”<br />
