Road Ramblings<br />

What a year <strong>2004</strong> was for our club.<br />

Besides a Maverick Region activity<br />

almost every week, the Porsche<br />

Parade <strong>2004</strong> finally came upon us. It was a<br />

great event and got rave reviews from the 600<br />

attendees who immersed themselves in a<br />

week-long Porsche love-fest during the week<br />

of the fourth of July. Maverick Region was in<br />

the spotlight of all of PCA and shone brightly. Even the<br />

weather cooperated. I’d like to thank Jan Mayo and her entire<br />

Parade team for putting on a great Parade and also for making<br />

Maverick Region look good in the eyes of the rest of PCA.<br />

As you may know, The Hope Shelter is our designated<br />

Charity. It is a haven for the victims of spousal abuse. This<br />

year a dedicated team of Maverick Members is bringing to<br />

fruition the dream of seeing the ground break on a new home<br />

for the Shelter. The old facility was neither large enough nor<br />

repairable enough to continue in its current capacity. This is<br />

a huge undertaking, but the results will be worth the effort.<br />

... As a result, folks tend to concentrate on the<br />

activities they like the best ...<br />

I want to thank all of the <strong>2004</strong> activity and event chairs<br />

for their efforts. If any one single person didn’t do each of<br />

their jobs to the fullest, we wouldn’t be able to have so many<br />

high-quality events that serve so many members. Guest<br />

attendees from other car clubs praise our activities, and our<br />

newsletter is the best of any North Texas enthusiast club.<br />

I want to thank our sponsors, who without their support,<br />

we wouldn’t have the number of events we do, the level of<br />

service, or the attendance we get at them. Thank you all.<br />

I want to thank my fellow executive committee: Noby<br />

Takahashi – Vice President, Bob Knight – Treasurer, and<br />

Mimi Spreen – Secretary for their support, help, and personal<br />

commitment over the past two years to run the region.<br />

Finally, I want to thank all of you for being members,<br />

joining as new members, and supporting the club, our charity,<br />

and our sponsors the way you have. I know at the end of<br />

the day in the scheme of life- this is just a car club. But I love<br />

Porsche cars- heck I love all kinds of cars- but I also love this<br />

region and its members. In conclusion, this has been an exciting<br />

two years to serve as your President and I thank you for<br />

allowing me to perform this service for our club.<br />

Maverick Region has grown very large over the years, and<br />

while a nice thought, it’s rare to find many members who<br />

engage in all the various activities and events the club offers.<br />

As a result, folks tend to concentrate on the activities they like<br />

the best. One of my goals during my tenure as President was<br />

to continue building the club into those areas of excellence.<br />

For example, I wanted the AX and TT group to offer lots of<br />

events for their entrants and have the best equipment and<br />

tools possible, and be profitable at the end of the year once all<br />

expenses and upgrades were accounted for. That group has<br />

achieved that this year as in years past! All of the disciplines-<br />

Drivers Education, Tours, Club Racing, Happy Hours,<br />

Socials- they all have strong followings, quality leadership,<br />

and increased attendance. While many were the same individuals,<br />

we attracted over 2000 people to all our events this<br />

year, not including Parade ’04.<br />

Curves Ahead<br />

The activities of <strong>2004</strong> are finally winding<br />

down, but there is still plenty to report<br />

for this issue. Late October saw several<br />

events for the Maverick Region, including our<br />

first-ever October Drivers Education. The<br />

event was sponsored by Boardwalk Porsche<br />

and was a big hit. I was lucky enough to squeeze<br />

in to my run-group ay the last minute, and I’m<br />

glad I did, it was the most fun that I’ve had at a<br />

DE in a while. I got some great instruction and learned several<br />

things that I can continue to work on in February at our next<br />

DE. You can read more about the DE in Ben Hartsell’s<br />

article on page 16.<br />

Another popular October event was the Charity<br />

Autocross held at the Texas Motor Speedway “bus lot”. There<br />

was a fantastic turnout and a challanging themed course.<br />

Marcus Booth’s article on pages 14-15 captures the fun,<br />

and there’s even a course map so you can see some of the<br />

“trickery” that course designer Chuck Machala dreamed up.<br />

I would like to make a correction to the Boxstoberfest<br />

article that we ran in the November issue. That article was<br />

actually written by Ted Pietrzak from the Hill Country Region.<br />

I had accidentally given credit to Tracey Gross, but Tracey does<br />

deserve credit for attending the event and being the conduit<br />

that brought this article and it’s photos to us to enjoy. Either<br />

way, everyone had fun and they hope that more Mavericks can<br />

join them next year for the annual event.<br />

Finally, this issue of <strong>Slipstream</strong> will be my last as Editor. In<br />

the two years that have passed since I took over from previous<br />

editor, Wendy Shoffit, I have learned a lot about the club and<br />

everyone involved. Putting together this publication each<br />

The November Board meeting was held on<br />

Tuesday, November 9th at Bobby Archer’s<br />

Motorsports/German Motor Works on<br />

Henderson Street in Fort Worth.<br />

Attendees: Keith Olcha, Bob Knight, Joel<br />

Nannis, Lanean Hughes, Rocky Johnson, Joe<br />

McGlohen, Mike Brodigan, Matt Platts, Mimi<br />

Spreen, Charlie and Teri Davis, Bill Dawson,<br />

The meeting was called to order at 6:50pm.<br />

Keith Olcha - Attendance is very low for Founders Day.<br />

Will send out an email saying Thursday is deadline. Two DE<br />

seats will be offered as a silent auction item, one novice and one<br />

advanced. The holiday party is at TMS on 12/12 and sponsored<br />

by RUF. The new member party is on 1/16.<br />

month can be a challange; waiting for content, photos, tracking<br />

people down who promised to do things, gathering<br />

tid-bits of information that will be helpful to the region, etc,<br />

but it’s been worth it. There’s a lot of time and work involved<br />

with putting each issue together, but I get a great amount of<br />

satisfaction each month when it’s done.<br />

I am also thankful for the help that I have received from<br />

many people, starting with everyone who writes articles for us.<br />

Without these event articles, <strong>Slipstream</strong> wouldn’t have much<br />

to say... let’s keep those articles coming in! And without the<br />

photography that’s provided by our regular photographers,<br />

the articles would be pretty boring, so a big thanks to everyone<br />

who has helped us there. The other main area that I get help<br />

every month is from the rest of the <strong>Slipstream</strong> “staff” that<br />

includes event ad design that was handled for the majority of<br />

my tenure by Teri Davis and has now been taken over by<br />

Dennis Chamberlain, proofreading by Wendy Shoffit and Jan<br />

Mayo, and final layout touch-ups and pre-production<br />

assistance by Kevin Hardison. Without all of these people’s<br />

help each month, <strong>Slipstream</strong> simply wouldn’t be possible.<br />

The editor position for 2005 will be filled by a relatively<br />

new member, Michael Holloway. Michael’s background<br />

includes experience with various desktop publishing software,<br />

and he’s excited to get started. Several of us “old-timers” will<br />

be hanging around to help out, effectively expanding the<br />

<strong>Slipstream</strong> staff while trying to spread out some of the work<br />

that has historically been placed on the Editor. Wendy Shoffit<br />

will become the Content Editor, I will be staying around as the<br />

Photo Editor, and Dennis, Jan, and Kevin will continue doing<br />

what they do so well for us. This Editorial staff “expansion” has<br />

been needed for a while, and I expect that will continue to<br />

happen as <strong>Slipstream</strong> moves farther into the future.<br />

Charlie Davis - Plans on doing some work on Truxster: 1)<br />

hydrolic lift needs to be lowered and 2) mount jacks on corners<br />

to keep steady when parked.<br />

Joel Nannis - Thinks we have new members, but is not getting<br />

information from National on a regular basis.<br />

Mike Brodigan - We have ads.<br />

Lanean - Ground breaking for Hope project will be on<br />

12/19 at 2:00, everyone is invited to attend (more details on<br />

page 10 - Ed). Kroger is providing us with skilled labor as their<br />

donation from the facilities division.<br />

Bob Knight - We have money<br />

Wendy Shoffit - Asked if anyone is interested in having<br />

more fun events. Charity AX had about 46 attendees and<br />

brought in about $1500. After track fees are deducted, the balance<br />

goes to Hope Shelter. People also made extra donations<br />

for Hope. Overall throughout the year TT and AX made a profit.<br />

Motion made to adjourn the meeting at 8:23, seconded<br />

and passed.<br />

track, but honorable<br />

Come Spring and good weather, we’ll be heading back<br />

to Speed Zone. In the meantime, for the <strong>December</strong> 16<br />

happy hour we’re heading to the Spaghetti Warehouse in<br />

Plano, and then it’s on to Salt Grass Steakhouse in Irving<br />

for the January 20 happy hour.<br />

Hope Shelter Update<br />

AGroundbreaking ceremony will be held on Sunday,<br />

<strong>December</strong> 19th at 2:00 pm. Please come and support<br />

this great project. Following the ceremony will be<br />

a sharing of holiday treats with the clients at Hope. For<br />

additional information or directions to Hope, contact a<br />

Hope Team member.<br />

We are still in need of assistance in the form of construction<br />

materials, skilled trade labor, individuals who can<br />

help with their time, talents, and resources.<br />

Charity Autocross<br />

There comes a weekend once in a while that Porsche<br />

drivers rise early and head for the track. We hope for<br />

perfect weather and the track most fit for our car (or<br />

Dad’s car). But this was a Halloween morning, a different<br />

autocross than usual. Black cats would cross the paths of fast<br />

cars and doom them to wiping out cones. We even found one<br />

on my dad’s windshield. Normally when you hit cones you<br />

just get a bad time or maybe a DNF, but this time it was more<br />

punishable. Cone crushing offenders could be doomed to<br />

visit Joel the Grim Reaper, and if you hit a pumpkin you got<br />

ten seconds added to your time. As everyone hoped, it looked<br />

like it wasn’t going to rain, but right after the driver’s meeting<br />

it started to pour.<br />

... but this was Halloween morning ...<br />

Car #619, which I think was a 968, was the first car on<br />

the track. The cars sped around the track in the rain, trying<br />

not to go to fast for fear they would spin. The first cones<br />

went down at precisely 9:47 AM. The Grim Reaper drove<br />

car #167, some sort of hot rod (a borrowed Formula<br />

Atlantic - Ed). He took the first spin and hit an impressive<br />

34 cones for the day. My dad hit four cones, his personal<br />

record. Later in the day the rain stopped and #73, a Honda<br />

Prelude managed to pick up a cone and try to carry it off,<br />

but the guys at the gate caught him.<br />

Now, the technical issue of the autocross; which way do<br />

you go around the figure eight triangles? Many people<br />

figured it out and called it obvious but I decided for fun I’d<br />

take a trip back to last year’s trigonometry class and figure<br />

it out without a car since I only have my permit. I also<br />

figured out who had been sleeping in math class back in<br />

their high school days.<br />

So here’s how it is: two triangles, you have to go around<br />

all the sides once and through the center at least twice. By<br />

observation you can see that both triangles are equilateral,<br />

meaning all the sides are the same and all the angles are 60º.<br />

In trigonometry, if you draw a line down the middle of the<br />

equilateral triangles you will end up with 30-60-90 right<br />

triangles. By that you know that the short sides are each x<br />

but they add up to be 2x. Each hypotenuse is 2x, and the<br />

longer leg has the value x radical 2. The wrong way to get<br />

around the track was to go two long lengths, three short<br />

lengths, and a medium length; meaning straight on two<br />

triangle sides and through the middle once for each long<br />

length, and three short lengths for the turn around the<br />

bottom of the triangle. The length of both long legs of the<br />

right triangles was x radical 2 so I called that the medium<br />

length. A long length is 4x and a short length is 2x.<br />

Here are the two ways that you could go:<br />

1: 3(4x)+2(2x)=16x<br />

2: 2(4x)+3(2x)+2x√2=14x+2x√2<br />

We know that 2x√2 is bigger than 2x, so therefore the<br />

first way (left at the first triangle) is shorter.<br />

Most people went the right way and some people went<br />

the wrong way, but it was all fun.<br />

The rain quit as everyone hoped and people got in their<br />

fastest runs at the end of the day. It was a great autocross on<br />

Halloween; the track was a lot of fun (to walk in my case).<br />

One last thing, everyone be sure to stop by the yellow 914<br />

and talk my dad into buying a Boxster or a 911, not an<br />

MR2! Well since we’ll be heading into the five month<br />

autocross drought, see you next year.<br />

Drivers Education at MotorSport Ranch<br />

My 17th DE – How in the world did I get to this point?<br />

While at lunch with Hans Hoffman a couple of weeks ago<br />

I had a surprise visit at the table by none other than<br />

Lanean Hughes. We were talking about Porsche publications<br />

and <strong>Slipstream</strong> came up and I was lamenting the fact that it<br />

seems like the AX/TT folks get all the coverage and glamour shots<br />

on the cover! Lanean retorted that if someone (looking me square<br />

in the eye) would submit some content about the DE’s we’d love<br />

to feature them in <strong>Slipstream</strong>. Well – what could I do at that point<br />

other than volunteer to write a piece about the upcoming inaugural<br />

October Maverick DE at MotorSport Ranch? So here I am,<br />

writing the first installment of what I hope will be a series of articles<br />

on my DE and Porsche experiences.<br />

I got my introduction to Porsche when my wife,<br />

Michelle, purchased a 2000 Boxster new from Boardwalk<br />

Porsche (formerly The Porsche Store). Wayne Corley was our<br />

sales contact and I hit it off well with both Wayne and our<br />

service advisor, Hans Hoffman. It turns out that both Wayne<br />

and Hans were into the DE side of things and took every<br />

opportunity to suggest that I get my own P-car and take it out<br />

to the track. In the meantime my older brother purchased a<br />

2000 996. I drove it and rode in it and that only further fueled<br />

the desire to get my own P-car. I couldn’t get a Boxster<br />

(already had one) and couldn’t get a 996 (can’t copy the older<br />

brother) so I decided to look for the last of the air cooled cars<br />

– a 993. Once I had decided on the 993 I did some research<br />

and became aware of the ‘Turbo-Look’ or ‘C2S’ or ‘Carrera S’<br />

cars and loved the look of the car. So I mentioned off-hand to<br />

Wayne Corley “If you happen to have a Carrera S come<br />

through the shop – let me know – I’m in the market”. Come<br />

to find out that Wayne held his laughter until I was out of<br />

sight – these cars never came onto the market! Well, two<br />

weeks later the improbable happened and a 1997 Carrera S<br />

showed up for trade at the Porsche Store – Wayne called me<br />

– and I bought it. In May of 2001 I became the proud owner<br />

of an Arctic Silver 993 C2S.<br />

Since then I’ve been sucked into the world of Porsche<br />

with a vengeance. As with most 30,000 mile 993’s the suspension<br />

was shot – so I put on Bilstein PSS9’s. The steering wheel<br />

and shifter were worn – so I put in 996 bits to replace the<br />

worn parts and update the look of the interior. The turbo<br />

twist wheels had seen their better days so I updated my street<br />

wheels with the 2002 Carrera 5-spoke wheels. Put on Turbo S<br />

positioning lamps, Euro front bumper cover, clear turn<br />

signals, and I was in love. After the newness of ownership<br />

wore off I decided I’d see what this DE thing was all about. I<br />

went to my first track event as part of the 2001 Maverick<br />

Region instructor clinic – turns out I was going to be a guinea<br />

pig for new instructors! Well – I did my first track driving<br />

with Mike Lapp as my instructor and I loved it! Since then<br />

I have participated in no less than 17 DE’s in 3 years! I’ve<br />

driven Hallet once, TWS twice, TMS twice, and MSR twelve<br />

times. My progression has been steady but sloooow. I’ve<br />

finally become comfortable with the sensations of high speed<br />

driving and am really enjoying it this year. All of my<br />

instructors have been wonderful – and very patient with my<br />

‘methodical’ learning pace.<br />

So why do I DE? I suppose everyone has their own list of<br />

reasons – it’s fun, challenging, a chance to stretch the p-car’s<br />

legs, and is much safer than street ‘racing’. It is all those things<br />

for me but principally I see it as a way to stretch myself. You<br />

see I have some phobias – not too serious but they are there.<br />

Claustrophobia, fear of heights, can’t stand elevators, and<br />

worst of all I don’t like flying – and I fly 30-40 times a year<br />

between work and travel. I decided that I needed to face my<br />

phobias, look them square in the eye, and stretch myself<br />

beyond them. Driving my Porsche at DE’s does just that for<br />

me. I am learning to face the normal fears of crashing, spinning,<br />

and embarassing myself in front of my peers. And it is<br />

working. I’ve gained more confidence in my car – but mostly<br />

more confidence in myself. That confidence extends beyond<br />

the track. It is enhancing my life in general and the lessons I<br />

learn at the track are suprisingly global in their applicability.<br />

If I can face the fears I have at the track and grow beyond<br />

them – well then I can do the same in all aspects of life!<br />

Another fantastic benefit of the DE experience has been<br />

all the friendships I’ve developed. I have gear head buddies to<br />

talk to so I don’t bore Michelle to tears with all the P-car talk.<br />

I have developed business relationships with other club members<br />

– it’s great to do business with someone you actually<br />

know and with whom you share a common love of Porsche.<br />

So I can stretch myself, have a lot of fun, meet great people,<br />

spend time away from the clamor of my every day life – what<br />

is not to like here? If you DE you know what I mean – if you<br />

don’t, seriously consider giving it a try. You just might find<br />

there’s a lot more to it than just blasting around the track!<br />

Big Cedar Lodge Tour<br />

Once again last week on October 22nd, 23rd, and<br />

24th Ted Glover, with the help of Andy Miller, put<br />

together a great run. The Oklahoma-Arkansas-and<br />

now Missouri tour is in the bag. It’s not our fault<br />

Arkansas didn’t have the space Texas has and tried to put<br />

the same number of miles in a smaller area. The fore<br />

fathers of Arkansas are totally responsible for building<br />

curved roads that go up and down hills between tall trees<br />

that over-hangs the road with beautiful leaves of red,<br />

orange, and yellow which naturally beckon a Texas<br />

Porsche driver. You stick a curve in front of me and my<br />

Porsche and I will enjoy it, I know I will, I’ve seen myself<br />

do it.<br />

We had 15 cars and only one car missed a turn in 3<br />

days of driving over 1,500 miles. This is the first tour<br />

that all the cars were of the 911 family with no Boxsters.<br />

The cars were as colorful as the scenery with red, white,<br />

yellow, silver, blue, and of course, black. The one time<br />

we got cars lost was because the person met us in a<br />

... I will enjoy it, I know I will, I’ve<br />

seen myself do it ...<br />

different town and was new, therefore did not attend the<br />

driver meeting which is held before we leave in Dallas.<br />

They did not know the rules but learned quickly, we<br />

really look after each other.<br />

We left Dallas Friday morning with a drive up<br />

through Oklahoma to Poteau for lunch at Warehouse<br />

Willy’s then back on the road into Arkansas. No rain so<br />

the roads were dry and traction was very good so we did<br />

our best to straighten them out with our road handling<br />

ability. We sure enjoyed the handling of the Porsche<br />

automobile. Don’t worry we had no effect on them, they<br />

are still just like we left them. With one rest stop after<br />

lunch we rolled into the Big Cedar Lodge in Missouri at<br />

about 5:00 PM. We all registered and cleaned up for the<br />

evening meal at the Devil’s Pool Restaurant.<br />

Ted Glover is retiring from leading all the tours fulltime<br />

but will work with Andy Miller next year for about<br />

5 or 6 trips. Before the meal we gave Ted an album of<br />

pictures from all the trips and comments from different<br />

people who have gone on these trips. Andy Miller and<br />

I have been on most of the trips that Ted has put<br />

together, so we wrote along with a few others’ comments<br />

about Ted for the album and a lot of the members<br />

signed the album after writing their own thoughts. He<br />

really enjoyed looking at the pictures and reading the<br />

funny captions that Andy put on the pictures. I know<br />

Ted and he will put this album in his library for all to<br />

see. Bonnie, Ted’s better half, may even let it sit on the<br />

coffee table. Speaking of Bonnie Glover we have to<br />

thank her as well. I can’t think of one trip she was not<br />

on always relaying turns, road numbers, calling back to<br />

see if all made the turn, helping with coordination,<br />

allowing for her time with Ted to be taken by the club,<br />

and radioing to us to turn right when Ted would say left.<br />

Private joke, Bonnie always relayed to us what direction<br />

Ted said to turn and we were always telling her<br />

afterwards she said left, and then he turned right, and<br />

that she did not know which was her left or right. But<br />

then we heard Ted in the back ground saying left and<br />

she only relayed what he said. Bonnie, rest assured we all<br />

know where the error originated.<br />

After the evening meal and hours of laughing we all<br />

dropped into bed, spent. No, dummy, not in the same<br />

room. We are a together group but all had separate<br />

rooms. Speaking of rooms there is no need in renting<br />

expensive rooms at these nice hotels or resorts because<br />

you do not spend much time in them awake. But the<br />

scenery at Big Cedar was fantastic. The next day we went<br />

on two roads that we have never been on which Ted and<br />

Andy rightly named the “The Snake” and “KingSnake”.<br />

These things had more curves than Jane Mansfield and<br />

as many changes as Texas weather. We conquered the<br />

“The Snake” then took a rest at the town of Summit and<br />

then whipped out the Porsche snake charmer on the<br />

“KingSnake”. There is no Snake we can’t put back in the<br />

charmer’s Snake Basket. A long lunch in Mountainview<br />

and return trip to Big Cedar followed.<br />

We all rested and got ready for another good night<br />

meal with all our friends at the Candlestick Inn in<br />

Branson over looking Lake Taneycomo. This restaurant<br />

put us in a closed room, they were smart. We again had<br />

a very good meal and each received a piece of chocolate<br />

fudge cake that three people could have shared. It was<br />

again an enjoyable meal with our friends talking about<br />

the events. This was followed by an easy drive back to<br />

the resort and straight to bed.<br />

The next day, Sunday, we were on the road at 7:30 to<br />

Turner Bend down route 23 with a stop at the Queen<br />

Wilhelmina Lodge Restaurant on the Talimena Scenic<br />

Byway. A short stop in Antlers, Oklahoma and then the<br />

final drive back into Texas. If you haven’t been on one of<br />

these trips, you should go.<br />

Early 911 Restoration: No. 4<br />

It looks like I am stuck with a problem I assume is common<br />

to a lot of the early 911s - a rusty floorpan. It is my understanding<br />

that they did not start to galvanize the sheetmetal<br />

until about 1969. This was done only on the floorpan until<br />

about 1976 then the entire car was coated. I assume that my car<br />

has a galvanized floorpan. However, as you can see, after I<br />

removed the undercoating there was a severe rusting of the<br />

metal. In some places the rust-rot had eaten half way through<br />

the metal. I had spoken with some local Porsche shops about<br />

repairing the floorpan as I felt this was probably outside my skill<br />

level. Most don’t care to do this kind of work. One shop wanted<br />

to cut the metal out between the door sill and center tunnel then<br />

drop in a new piece from the top (or inside the car). I wasn’t<br />

sure that I liked this idea but the price was right - $500. This<br />

seemed to be an acceptable repair until I found rust located by<br />

the brake master cylinder (not an area easily accessed from<br />

inside or underneath the car). This would not be as easy to<br />

repair as we had first discussed. Well I took my time working on<br />

other parts of the car and finally decided to see if I could do the<br />

rust repair myself. I found a shop that had purchased a factory<br />

OEM 911 floorpan back in the mid-80s and he wanted to get rid<br />

of it. For the paltry sum of $250 I was the proud owner of a<br />

complete factory floorpan. This is a tremendous bargain<br />

because the best price I found in the aftermarket is $200 for just<br />

one side. My floorpan also includes the area by the brake master<br />

cylinder that no restoration company makes.<br />

Okay, now I have a floorpan so it would probably be a good<br />

idea if I knew how to weld. I haven’t touched a welder since high<br />

school (~25 years) so I am sure to be rusty. I want to minimize<br />

my costs so I investigate all my options. I could use stick, MIG,<br />

or TIG. Stick is the old style of welding where you hold an electrically<br />

energized wire in your hand with a metal rod, “stick”,<br />

attached. When you touch the stick to the work surface you<br />

complete the electrical circuit and the high temperatures created<br />

melt the metal. Easy in principal, tough to do on a thin sheetmetal<br />

panel. MIG is a popular do-it-yourself method where the<br />

stick is replaced by a continuous spool of wire. When you want<br />

to weld you press a button and the wire is fed out of a “gun” in<br />

your hand. Then there is TIG. These units are great for performing<br />

very fine welds as they offer a lot of control.<br />

Unfortunately they are the most expensive. The thickness of the<br />

metal in the floorpan is about 0.040” or 19 Ga. Most welding<br />

units are designed for joining thick pieces of metal. Welding<br />

thin sheetmetal is probably the most challenging form of welding.<br />

If the welder is held in one place too long you get “blowthrough”<br />

(a big hole in the metal). If the time is insufficient then<br />

you don’t have good weld metal penetration between the two<br />

sheets of metal. Heat distortion is another critical issue because<br />

during the welding process the metal expands slightly. If too<br />

much of this occurs then the metal warps. So now to the issue<br />

of which kind: stick or MIG. Cheap MIG units can be had for<br />

about $150 then you need to purchase a bottle of shielding gas<br />

for about $100. I found a well known automotive restoration<br />

company sells an attachment for a stick welder that allows quality<br />

welds on 24 Ga. material (bigger number is thinner metal).<br />

They also have an attachment to allow spot welding. I purchased<br />

both of these gizmos for about $50 each. I then found a 110Vstick<br />

welder on e-bay for $100. So I was off and running with<br />

this welding “system”. I practiced welding with this attachment<br />

which basically vibrates the tip of the electrode up and down so<br />

the electrode does not make continuous contact with the part.<br />

Well if you have ever tried to keep a 6” pencil in one spot while<br />

someone vibrates your hand up and down (I can just see you<br />

trying that right now) imagine doing that with a 12” electrode<br />

with sparks flying everywhere. Mark down one tool for the trash<br />

bin. The spot welder seemed to work okay but I can’t verify the<br />

quality of the joint without pulling the two panels of metal<br />

apart. Luckily a friend of a friend had a nice Miller Electric 115V<br />

MIG welder that I could borrow. With a little time and patience<br />

I learned to weld quite well on thin practice sheetmetal. I<br />

became quite excited when I could hear the bzzzzzz of a quality<br />

weld. Contrast that to bzz-pop-bzzzz-pop of a bad weld.<br />

After sufficient practice I was ready to weld in some bracing<br />

in the car. If I am to remove the entire floorpan then I will<br />

be loosing some of the structural integrity of the car. The doorsills<br />

and center tunnel act as the backbone with the floorpan<br />

connecting these components. I used square stock tubing and<br />

cross-braced the car in all three spatial planes.<br />

Now is the fun of removing the old floorpan. I purchased a<br />

spot weld drill and started to drill out the welds. There are two<br />

kinds of spot weld drills that I found. The first looks just like a<br />

very short drill bit with a very wide angle at the tip. The second<br />

is like a tiny hole-saw with a center guide pin. This is the one I<br />

purchased since it was $19 instead of $30 for the previous one.<br />

With the spot weld bit I purchased you must drill a pilot hole<br />

for the guide pin to fit into otherwise the spot drill just wanders<br />

all over. I am not sure how many spot welds there are in the<br />

floorpan but I used up 4 of the pilot drill bits at $5 each just<br />

working on the driver’s side of the car. This was also very<br />

tedious work. I then realized I could purchase drill bits with a<br />

130∞ angle and these would cut through the near panel and<br />

slightly into the far panel and work much faster than my spotweld<br />

drill. I went through another 10 of these drills at about $5<br />

each and I was probably only a third of the way through. I spoke<br />

with a neighbor who, at one time, restored a 356 and he suggested<br />

that I just use a sledgehammer and chisel to separate the two<br />

panels. It sounded a bit crude, but hey, he did it on his car. So I<br />

tried this for a very short period of time. That sledgehammer got<br />

very heavy and in a tight space I ended up hitting my head, my<br />

hand…. This really didn’t seem to be working well so I tried out<br />

my new air chisel. This did a beautiful job of separating the panels<br />

and made one heck of a racket. Only problem is that it was<br />

difficult to control the cutting direction. In a very short period of<br />

time I had cut out the rusty floorpan but was left with a lot terribly<br />

distorted doorsill/center tunnel and a lot of metal that<br />

needed to be ground away to create an even surface for welding.<br />

There goes another lesson. Take advice for what it cost to get.<br />

The season ending 4-hour race for the <strong>2004</strong> American<br />

LeMans Series wasn’t the first race ever run into the<br />

darkness, but it was the first time a night race has been<br />

held at Laguna Seca. If you were to purposely pick a spot to<br />

hold a night race it couldn’t be any darker than at Laguna.<br />

Although the “neighbors” were complaining about the noise<br />

(Laguna Seca is situated up in the hills inside the old Ft. Ord<br />

Artillery Range impact zone), the race ended at 8 PM and no<br />

further nasty phone calls came in after that.<br />

Practices for the night races are different. That is to say<br />

the night practice sessions are not held the night before<br />

(exception being Daytona) and the time between them and<br />

the race tends to dull the memory a bit. Couple that with an<br />

uncertain weather forecast, and you have an interesting<br />

event. This being the final <strong>2004</strong> Race, most of the Class winners<br />

were predictable, barring, of course, a catastrophic<br />

event. None the less, the race was interesting and when the<br />

rain came with about 30 minutes to go, it became more<br />

interesting as darkness and a slick track prevailed with no<br />

one wanting to pit for rain tires until absolutely necessary.<br />

The Race: The British #27 Creative Autosportif DBA-<br />

Zytek surprised many by taking the pole in front of the<br />

Audis. Driver Nicolas Minassian knew they would face a<br />

tough race with the 2 Audis and the ever-present Dyson<br />

cars. “We know the Audis will be consistent. They push<br />

buttons to get out of the pit where I have to worry about the<br />

clutch, gas, and brake. I will need a ten second lead to be<br />

successful in the pits.” But if you guessed Audi would win,<br />

you would be correct. They just keep steamrolling right<br />

along. The only thing that changed was the Team. The #38<br />

Series champions J.J. Lehto and Marco Werner came in 2nd<br />

this time, while the #2 Audi R8 with Johnny Herbert and<br />

Pierre Kaffer managed to take the checker.<br />

the win in that order and Job (factory driver) Timo<br />

Bernhard also took the driving title. Team Flying Lizards<br />

Porsche was 3rd. Sadly, the rumor may be true that the Alex<br />

Job Porsche Team may be calling it quits after this year, but<br />

the official word is “undecided”.<br />

Pit Rat Notes: The Track Management continues to<br />

surprise the Fans with some varied racing events (shifter<br />

Carts) and the occasional weird thing. This year, there was a<br />

Brazilian Dance Troupe decked out in Carnivale outfits<br />

going up and down the Paddock. More than 1 driver was<br />

seen following the scantily clad dancers as they … well,<br />

you know.<br />

There is still a lot of Team indecision regarding the<br />

2005 season. Dick Barbour was in the pits throughout the<br />

weekend talking to various manufacturers. He will not be<br />

back with the Lamborghinis, but he will be back.<br />

The next item hurts my brain. American Le Mans Series<br />

introduces the “Founder’s Challenge Cup” to celebrate<br />

accomplishments of gentlemen drivers (What about gentlewomen<br />

drivers?). Drivers in the AMLS whose primary<br />

career is not racing will have their own championship to<br />

compete for in 2005. Named in honor of ALMS founder<br />

Don Panoz, the Founder’s Challenge Cup will recognize<br />

drivers in each race, with points awarded for a season-long<br />

championship. The champions will receive unique,<br />

“specially designed awards” that will be revealed at the 2005<br />

season-opening event at Sebring. Enough said……<br />

Mazda Raceway at Laguna Seca continues to undergo<br />

more changes. Over the winter, the gravel trap runoff area at<br />

turn 9 will be expanded due in large part to the AMA<br />

Motorcycle race requirements. Ironically, the best place to<br />

view the race (my opinion) is at the signature “Corkscrew”<br />

Turn 8 where the view is now marred by the addition of<br />

high catch fences mandated by the Champ Car Series.<br />

Several individuals, off the record, made comments that if<br />

and when CART goes out of business, the fence would be<br />

removed.<br />

Also for the first time the Grand American Road<br />

Racing Association (GARRA) will be bringing the Grand<br />

Am series and the Daytona Prototypes to Laguna Seca for<br />

the 2005 Seasons 4th race on May 1st.<br />

Get to a race and support your local Racetrack.<br />

Olivier Beretta driving the #4 Corvette grabbed the pole<br />

in the GTS class, tying Ron Fellows for the most poles in the<br />

Series. However Fellows and Johnny O’Connell in the #3 car<br />

ended up with the win. With the pullout of the Team<br />

Barbour Lamborghini’s after the Petit LeMans at Road<br />

Atlanta, the Corvettes own the GTS class. This victory was a<br />

3-lap runaway from the Saleen and marked the first win for<br />

Team Corvette at Laguna Seca while finishing off a perfect<br />

year in which they went undefeated.<br />
