Well gang, it won't be long now.<br />

Based on all the conversations I<br />

overheard, at both the Holiday<br />

Party and the New Members Party, a lot of<br />

people, including me, are really looking<br />

forward to getting back behind the wheel of<br />

their favorite “P” car. In fact, by the time<br />

you read this, the <strong>2005</strong> driving season will<br />

be underway. The first autocross school kicks off in<br />

<strong>February</strong> and is a great start for both newcomers to the<br />

sport and experienced drivers, as well. The “old hands” get<br />

to freshen up their skills as instructors and the newcomers<br />

have the opportunity for some fun, informative seat time<br />

with knowledgeable, one-on-one instruction. If you have<br />

ever given any thought to really learning what you and<br />

your car are capable of, I highly recommend this as a<br />

starting point.<br />

... Driving in the wet is a good<br />

learning experience. ...<br />

<strong>February</strong> also is the starting point for the year’s<br />

Driver Education program, with the Lone Star Region event<br />

at Texas World Speedway on the 12th and 13th and the<br />

Maverick DE at Motorsport Ranch on the 26th and 27th of<br />

the month. Some people shy away from these early events<br />

because of the uncertainty of the weather. I urge you not to<br />

let that hold you back. Driving in the wet is a good learning<br />

experience. It requires a lot of emphasis on car control and<br />

smoothness, that will pay big dividends down the line.<br />

Driving in the rain is also a fun equalizer between the big<br />

horsepower beasts and smaller displacement cars.<br />

Hats off to Eric Erz, the chair for our Tech Sessions,<br />

for organizing a Dyno Day in <strong>February</strong>. This should prove<br />

to be informative for all those involved. No doubt some<br />

participants will be pleased with the results and others<br />

dismayed. At a minimum, it will lead to some spirited<br />

discussions. By the way, if you have ideas for a Tech Session<br />

or would like to volunteer your car as a guinea pig, don't<br />

hesitate to contact Eric.<br />

March marks what, for many of us, will be the start<br />

of the Club Racing season with the Lone Star Region Race<br />

at TWS in College Station. The number of Maverick club<br />

racers, which is already significant, continues to expand. It<br />

looks like Colin Graidage, Chuck Machala and Mark Steele<br />

are preparing to join the fray. (There may well be others and<br />

I apologize for any unintentional omissions).<br />

In addition to continuing the Autocross and Time Trial<br />

schools, March also brings us the first of several Photo<br />

Rallies and scenic Tours of Texas and surrounding states.<br />

Also, in the spirit of “One man's/woman's trash is another<br />

man's/woman's treasure”, the first swap meet of the year is<br />

in March. This is an ideal opportunity to clear out some of<br />

those valuable “antique” auto parts you have been hoarding<br />

for so long. Of course, the real challenge is to leave with<br />

less than you started with, because there is always lots of<br />

good “stuff” available for purchase or trade.<br />

The observant reader will notice that no mention is<br />

made of any yearly kickoff of a Concours. The reason<br />

being, so far, no one has shown an interest in chairing the<br />

Concours Committee position. If some, as yet unidentified,<br />

individual would like to revitalize what in recent years has<br />

been a dormant program, all they need to do is give me a<br />

call.<br />

So there you have it; a quick rundown of what looks like<br />

a fantastic start to the <strong>2005</strong> Maverick driving year. I can't<br />

wait to get rolling. We have a solid core of participants in<br />

all of our events.<br />

However, in an effort to promote a little cross-pollination,<br />

I encourage you to try something new this year.<br />

Wendy Shoffit and Steve Boyd have created a full year calendar,<br />

in printable PDF form, on our website. Be sure to<br />

print a copy, so you will know what's going on all year. If<br />

appropriate, print two, so your significant other will not<br />

accidentally schedule something silly (like a wedding, for<br />

example) on a key driving date.<br />

Maverick Minutes<br />

Ruf Auto Center Dallas hosted the January<br />

<strong>2005</strong> Maverick Region Board meeting on<br />

January 3, <strong>2005</strong>. Thanks to Hans Hoffmann<br />

and Wayne Corley for staying late and putting up<br />

with 18 additional Mavericks as we brought in the<br />

New Year.<br />

For <strong>2005</strong>, the region will hold the monthly<br />

board meeting on the first Monday of the month with two exceptions.<br />

The region will hold the July <strong>2005</strong>, and September <strong>2005</strong><br />

board meeting on the first Tuesday of the respective months. The<br />

January meeting had the following 20 members in<br />

attendance:Executive Council: Rocky Johnson, Mark Gluck, Jeff<br />

Atkins, Michael Wingfield; Board Members: Mike Brodigan,<br />

Chuck Machala, Bill Dawson, Lanean Hughes, Mike Holloway,<br />

Joe McGlohen, Bill Miller, Joel Nannis, Andy Miller, Dennis<br />

Chamberlain, Wendy Shoffit; Membership: Bob Knight, Noby<br />

Takahashi, Albert Sansores, Hans Hoffman, and Wayne Corley.<br />

Rocky Johnson: called the meeting to order at 6:55 PM,<br />

and began a “round table” format. Anyone present could present<br />

a report or issue to the Board for discussion. Mike Brodigan:<br />

<strong>Slipstream</strong> ads are current with the exception of one advertiser.<br />

He will contact the merchant one more time for payment before<br />

the end of the month. Otherwise, he may pull the ad from<br />

<strong>Slipstream</strong>. He has a waiting list of other advertisers should he<br />

have to pull the ad for non-payment. Bob Knight: Transfer of all<br />

Treasurer items complete to Jeff Atkins. The region completed<br />

and passed the IRS audit. The transfer of the region bank<br />

accounts from Bank of America to J.P. Morgan has almost completed.<br />

Outstanding checks prevent the closing of the Bank of<br />

America account. Once those checks clear, the region can close<br />

the account.<br />

Chuck Machala: AutoScope will open from 5-7:00 PM on<br />

2/26 and 3/2 to tech cars in support of the AX schools. Bill Miller<br />

will set up AX tech with Mayo Performance. AX school registration<br />

will only appear online at the Maverick web site<br />

(http://www.pca.org/mav/). This year, the region will limit the<br />

number of attendees to the AX schools to 26 and 28 for the<br />

<strong>February</strong> and March events respectively. He would like to have a<br />

copy of the AX tech form available on the Maverick web site.<br />

Wendy Shoffit: On behalf of Teri Davis: Teri plans to investigate<br />

the possibility of a summer Round Up, possibly hosted in<br />

Granbury. The region can receive a National subsidy for holding<br />

the multi-event weekend. The board expresses interest in a ’05<br />

Round Up, provided the event has economical accommodations.<br />

Joe McGlohen and Rocky Johnson suggest “economical “ means<br />

the maximum host location charge should not exceed $70 per<br />

day. Wendy Shoffit: On behalf of Jan Mayo: The region has<br />

approximately 60 garment bags left over from Parade ’04.<br />

Proposed dispositions of the bags include donating to Hope<br />

Shelter, selling at events, and selling through the Goodie Store.<br />

Per Lanean, Hope Shelter received 12 garment bags from Parade.<br />

The bags will appear at the New Members’ party for sale at $15<br />

each (a bargain price!). All proceeds from the sales will go directly<br />

to the Hope Shelter.<br />

Wendy Shoffit: Her Girl Scout troop will sell cookies beginning<br />

Friday (1/7) this year to benefit Hope Shelter. Bill Dawson:<br />

<strong>February</strong> DE registration opens Thursday (1/6). He will finalize<br />

the contract this month with Motorsport Ranch for the four DE<br />

events in ’05. Lanean added that Ruf Auto Center would sponsor<br />

the <strong>February</strong> DE, and that Mr. Ruf himself will attend.<br />

Lanean Hughes: She has talked with Steve Boyd, the<br />

Maverick Region Webmaster, to get the ’05 information updated.<br />

Hope Shelter held a groundbreaking ceremony on December 19,<br />

2004, for the new building. She will serve as Club Race chair again<br />

this year. Ben Witry Bank of Source Mortgage, will sponsor the<br />

New Members’ Party on 1/16. However, the region will still need<br />

to pay for the tables and chairs. She would like to step down from<br />

the Hospitality chair position. The person filling the Hospitality<br />

Chair vacancy will need to find locations for Founder’s Day and<br />

the Holiday party, as well as coordinate food for each event.<br />

Mark Gluck: Has received transfer of VP responsibilities<br />

from Noby. He will have insurance in place three weeks before<br />

events as necessary. Mike Holloway: Set the 18th of the month as<br />

the <strong>Slipstream</strong> deadline for article submission for publication in<br />

the following month. He has worked with Matt and Wendy to<br />

slate the regularly appearing articles. Requests that photo submissions<br />

have at least 300 dpi resolution and will buy a beer for<br />

anyone who reads his silly articles and admits to it.<br />

Joe McGlohen: Reminded the Board that at the December,<br />

2004 meeting, the Board approved $800 dollars for the AX<br />

Committee to purchase radios. He located Motorola 7100 series<br />

radios for $75 per pair of radios, and invites the AX Committee<br />

to investigate the purchase of these radios. He will add a “Beer”<br />

flag to the standard flag set used for DE events, motivated by the<br />

Patti Mascone article appearing in the December 2004, issue of<br />

Panorama. Bill Miller: He needs payment from the Treasurer to<br />

secure the AX event dates and locations.<br />

Albert Sansores: He would like to see the region present more<br />

Tech Sessions. The Board directed him to contact Eric Erz, who has<br />

taken on the responsibility for Tech Sessions this year. Joel Nannis:<br />

He still has problems getting a membership list from National.<br />

Andy Miller: He has taken over Tours this year, and will submit<br />

<strong>Slipstream</strong> articles to Mike H. Dennis Chamberlain: Saltgrass<br />

Steak House will host the January Happy Hour. <strong>February</strong> location<br />

not yet set. He will create event ads for <strong>Slipstream</strong> this year, and<br />

needs event info. Reminds everyone that the Maverick web site<br />

now has a “Photo of the Week”, and he would like to encourage<br />

membership participation in submitting photos.<br />

Rocky Johnson: Reiterates that the <strong>2005</strong> Board will meet the<br />

first Monday of each month with two exceptions. The exceptions<br />

include July <strong>2005</strong>, and September <strong>2005</strong>, when the Board will meet<br />

on the first Tuesday of the respective months. The Jaguar Club has<br />

invited Maverick region to co-host a Concour's d'Elegance. Board<br />

unanimous consensus to not co-host the event. However, the<br />

region will notify the membership of the event and allow<br />

individual members to participate in the Jaguar hosted event.<br />

Park Place Porsche will host the next Board meeting on Monday,<br />

<strong>February</strong> 7, <strong>2005</strong>. The January meeting adjourned at 8:30 PM.<br />

The December 16th happy hour at the<br />

Spaghetti Warehouse in Plano was sandwiched<br />

between the Maverick Region<br />

Holiday Party on December 12 and, of course,<br />

Christmas. Nevertheless, a determined group<br />

of twenty-eight Maverick partiers braved the<br />

Christmas traffic to venture out in the cold and<br />

the astonishing traffic.<br />

Grill at Trinity Mills and the Dallas North<br />

Passion and Performance<br />

Porsche owners typically have a<br />

unique outlook on life. Often, they<br />

are people who demonstrate both<br />

performance and passion, achieving high<br />

levels of excellence through their unique<br />

outlook, internal motivation, life<br />

experiences and personal philosophy.<br />

The Porsche Club of America has been a<br />

great place to meet new and interesting<br />

people. <strong>Slipstream</strong>’s Passion and Performance segment<br />

offers a chance to do just that. Please meet Aimee Mullins.<br />

Aimee Mullins is a close family friend. She was born<br />

without the fibulae in both her legs. During her first year,<br />

her parents made the difficult decision to have her legs<br />

amputated just below the knee. Aimee grew up wearing<br />

prosthetic wooden legs. She excelled in academics and<br />

athletics such as swimming and softball. She was granted a<br />

full academic scholarship to Georgetown University where<br />

she studied international diplomacy and foreign relations.<br />

While at Georgetown, she worked at the Pentagon (Defense<br />

Dept.) for Colin Powell. In her sophomore year, Aimee<br />

heard about a track meet in Boston for amputees. Without<br />

any formal training in track and field, Aimee entered the<br />

100 and 200 meter dashes and the long jump. That meet,<br />

she set US records in the 100 and long jump. Back at<br />

Georgetown with Gold around her neck, she decided<br />

to contact the Georgetown University track coach (the<br />

legendary Frank Gagliano) for<br />

a try out. Georgetown<br />

University is a division 1 school<br />

which offers full athletic scholarships.<br />

After three months of<br />

private training with him, she<br />

earned a spot on the team.<br />

design the carbon fiber artificial<br />

limbs she runs with. Aimee<br />

graduated from Georgetown Summa Cum Laude. She has<br />

become an accomplished actor and runway model and has<br />

been ranked People's magazine top 50 most beautiful<br />

people for several years.<br />

MH: I remember once you told me that when you were<br />

16, your first driving experience was in a Porsche 911<br />

Carrera with a Tiptronic transmission on an airport<br />

runway?<br />

AM: It was actually my first experience driving a<br />

manual transmission, and it was the car of a friend who<br />

shared my love of flying. We went out to a small, familiar<br />

airport runway and I practiced driving stick shift all around<br />

the runway. It was an entirely different driving experience<br />

in that I felt truly in control of the car: I felt as though I<br />

were part of it. It was exhilarating and that night I feel in<br />

love with Porsche and its design.<br />

MH: The Tiptronic was essentially designed to give the<br />

driver the control of a standard transmission without the<br />

leg strain of having to press the clutch. Aimee, what was<br />

your impression of the car?<br />

AM: It was incredibly freeing for me to drive this way –<br />

feeling that I was really driving the car rather than the<br />

detachment that accompanies an automatic transmission. I<br />

appreciate the feeling of having a manual transmission<br />

without the physical problem of me having to press down a<br />

clutch. Since I don’t have ankles on either side, I use<br />

my entire leg to press down and release pressure on the<br />

pedals by lifting my thigh muscle. This situation makes a<br />

traditional clutch problematic, whereas the Tiptronic<br />

allows me the sensation of connecting with the car through<br />

the gear changes without both thighs having to work. In a<br />

word, it is thrilling.<br />

MH: Porsche seems to do a great job of blending<br />

passion and performance. That combination reminds me<br />

of you. What can you say about that?<br />

Big East Track Meet<br />

AM: What’s to say? It’s the winning combination for<br />

any person or any company. It’s what makes something go<br />

beyond just being “good” to becoming iconic, standing the<br />

test of time and having the relevance of being trailblazers<br />

for each coming generation.<br />

Needs More Cowbell...<br />

Sometimes if you are going to play the part,<br />

you have to talk the part. Anyone wanting<br />

to get into autocross (AX), track racing and<br />

even rallies should know some of the common<br />

(and not-so-common) jargon, slang words and<br />

phrases. I got together with a bunch of friends<br />

and here are a few we came up with. These are<br />

the things they don’t teach you in DE.<br />

Adding Perspective: Making the things in the mirror look smaller.<br />

Back Marker: Lapped traffic.<br />

Balled Up: The condition of a car after a major off and contact with something<br />

solid.<br />

Bench Racing: Discussing what an awesome driver you are after the race /<br />

event is over.<br />

Big Moment: See “Tank Slapper”<br />

Boy Racer: The guy that shoes up to DE with every imaginable racing item<br />

and only does DE's.<br />

Brain Fade: Stupid mistake by driver usually occurs in corners or when<br />

attempting to out brake someone in a higher class.<br />

Brown Out: What happens during a scary "Off" or "Tank Slapper".<br />

Bus Stop: A Chicane built into the track in order to slow down the pace at<br />

that section of the track. (aka "The Inner Loop" at Watkins Glen)<br />

Cayenneing or Farming: An off track excursion.<br />

Clag or Klag or Pick-up: Refers everything that sticks to the hot race tires,<br />

mostly rubber from off line.<br />

Collect: Hit another car. For example: the guy spun out and stopped in the<br />

middle of the track just waiting for someone to collect him.<br />

Cornering on its Door-Handles: The car has lots of body roll, lean.<br />

Crossed Up: Usually the direct result of a severe "tank slapper".<br />

Dialed In or Sorted: Refers to optimum chassis or engine setup.<br />

Dicing: Fighting for track position with another competitor.<br />

Earlied: Took the early-apex line through a corner.<br />

Early Apex: When the car is nearest the inside of a turn earlier on in the turn.<br />

Floor Pedal: Either when you go to hit the brake and it goes to the floor<br />

(see pucker factor) or when your instructor or passenger makes braking<br />

motions in the passenger seat.<br />

Freight Train: Line of cars in single file.<br />

Groove: The clean line that provides the fastest way around the circuit. The<br />

groove can change during the course of a race depending on track conditions,<br />

e.g., heat, cold, moisture, etc., as well as oil, water and rubber from the<br />

race cars.<br />

Hole-shot: A good start.<br />

Hooked Up: Means: Having good traction.<br />

Hunan: Sound heard when a Porsche passes by on the track. You have to add<br />

the Doppler sound effect Huuuuuuunaaaaaaaann!<br />

Hustling the Car: A driver's ability to push the race car to the limit, even if it is not<br />

handling well. A critical factor in determining that winning edge. Winning drivers<br />

adjust and adapt better to overcome mechanical or weather related problems.<br />

Invisible Flag: The blue (you are about to be passed) flag.<br />

Jesus Handle: If you are carrying a passenger this part of the car will help to<br />

indicate how hard you were driving. It is so named this because this is usually<br />

who the passenger screams for to save them from a particularly late braking<br />

corner entry.<br />

Keep it Between the Grass: Stay on the asphalt, don't fly off the track.<br />

Keep the Shiny Side Up: Be safe, don't flip your car.<br />

Landscaper: A car that early apexes.<br />

Late Apex: When the car is nearest the inside of a turn later on in the turn.<br />

Late Brake: Passing in the braking zone.<br />

Leaning On: (see "NASCAR pass")<br />

Line: Simply the quickest way around a race circuit. To run the fastest racing<br />

line, a driver must take advantage of all of his abilities as well as that of the<br />

race car, taking advantage of a racer's braking, cornering and acceleration<br />

techniques.<br />

Loose: Going off the road backwards.<br />

Marbles: Small bits of rubber that have broken off tires during a race.<br />

'Marbles' are usually found in the corners of American Le Mans Series road<br />

racing circuits, often gathering on the outside of the racing line.<br />

Meatball Flag: (Black flag with Red dot in the middle): mechanical problem<br />

with your car.<br />

Momentum Car: A low hp car.<br />

NASCAR Pass: Bumping another car while passing them; or bumping them<br />

to allow you to get past them. Sometimes shortened to "NASCAR'ed".<br />

Needs More Cowbell: Often heard in the pits. No one really understands<br />

what it means, but it sounds cool.<br />

Opposite Lock: Making a left hand turn but yet turning the steering wheel full<br />

right.<br />

PEBSAS Issue: A bad driver. (Problem Exists Between Seat and Steering<br />

wheel).<br />

Pit Tootsie: Scantily dressed women in the pits.<br />

Pucker Factor: Just how scary something was. ("That one had a pretty high<br />

pucker factor, there!")<br />

Pull a Monty: Anyone who pulls a Montoya like suicide move.<br />

Push / Plow or The Car's Tight: Under-steer.<br />

Push: Going off the road front-end first.<br />

Ran Away And Hid: built up a huge lead.<br />

Red Mist: Anger that makes you do stupid things<br />

Roll: As in 4 wheel drift not roll-over .<br />

Rolling Chicane: Stupid back marker.<br />

Sideways: Significant over-steering.<br />

Slingshot: Drafting for a pass.<br />

Shunt: Smacking a wall with your car.<br />

Tail-out: (see "Sideways")<br />

Tank Slapper: (from bikes, only slang for cars) waggling the tail back and<br />

forth uncontrollably.<br />

Throttle Steer: Turning the car by the amount of gas you give it.<br />

Unplanned Agricultural Excursion: Going off course.<br />

Wall Tats: Short for wall tattoos where a car has hit the wall and leaves a mark.<br />

Zen Thing: You know it when it happens, words can’t explain it.<br />

Goodyear Eagle 25th Anniversary<br />

In December Lanean informed me that Goodyear was looking<br />

for cars for a dealer conference. The process for selection was<br />

to submit a picture of your car between the years of 1981 and<br />

<strong>2005</strong>. I submitted my 1981 928. In January I received notification<br />

that my car was one of 25 cars out of 104 entries that had been<br />

selected. As an incentive for showing the car I received a set of<br />

new Goodyear Eagles. The show was at the Gaylord Hotel in<br />

Grapvine. I had the tires mounted, polished the car and was off to<br />

the show.<br />

We had to have the cars at the Gaylord at 10AM on January<br />

30. There were a few requirements in order to bring the cars<br />

into the hall. You had to have less than a quarter of a tank of gas<br />

and once inside, the positive terminal needed to be disconnected<br />

and the gas cap had to be secured. These requirements were<br />

sent several times. Unfortunately, the car in front of me had just<br />

filled up with 24 gallons and was not allowed into the show. The<br />

cars were led into the hall and placed in no particular order.<br />

The fire marshall inspected the cars around noon and we<br />

were free until 6PM when the show started. In addition, they<br />

provided a room at the Gaylord for anyone showing their car<br />

who wanted to stay the night. I showed back up around 6 in the<br />

Goodyear racing shirt that was also provided. We had no particular<br />

function to perform. Many of us stayed around our cars<br />

to answer any questions. There was a box in front of each car so<br />

the people could vote for the car they liked the best.<br />

Goodyear provided a tremendous spread of free food and<br />

drink. I found out that 1800 people were attending the conference.<br />

As I was wandering around, several NASCAR drivers were<br />

led in to sign autographs. They were Bill Elliott (my favorite<br />

driver), Rusty Wallace, and Ricky Rudd. I had them sign the<br />

shirt that Goodyear provide and will put it under glass. In addition,<br />

they had 6 fabulous impersonators. Dolly Parton was one<br />

of them and did she look good!<br />

Later they were giving out awards to the dealers and they<br />

brought in Richard Petty and Darrell Waltrip. Unfortunately,<br />

they were led out as quickly as they were led in. No chance to<br />

get their autographs. The show included all sorts of items that<br />

the dealers could sell like rims and tire changers as well as many<br />

items from vendors for the dealers to improve their bottom<br />

line.<br />

The show ended around 10:30, so I loaded up the car and<br />

then enjoyed my beautiful and spacious room. An e-mail came<br />

the next week saying that the top voted was a 2003 Chevrolet<br />

SSR that had the engine chromed and had digital read outs in<br />

the dash and rear license plate. It also had LED’s along the<br />

inside of the hood, interior, door handles, etc. The owner, Tom<br />

Snodgrass (not ours), received an all expense paid trip to the<br />

Brickyard 400. The next two highest voted for cars received paid<br />

trips to Bob Bondurant Driving school for 2 and seven others<br />

received another set of tires. Goodyear really went all out for<br />

this show! What an honor it was to be part of it. Thanks,<br />

Early 911 Restoration: No. 6<br />

Some of you have asked former editor, Matt Platts, if you<br />

can contact me and I welcome the opportunity to discuss<br />

my project with you. Just get with Matt as he has my<br />

contact information.<br />

Well, things are now starting to look a little better for me. The<br />

car is starting to be reassembled! I finally got the floorpan welded in<br />

and am quite pleased with the quality of the welding. My father and<br />

brother are welding inspectors and their impression of the weld<br />

quality was favorable. Of course I did the typical amateur welder job<br />

of probably welding too much. After I used the rosette welds (making<br />

a mushroom-like puddle in the middle of the drilled out spot weld) I<br />

put a continuous bead of weld around the entire car. I figured better<br />

safe than sorry. However, I did employ a technique called<br />

“stitch-welding”. This is where you weld a little line, say 2 inches, then<br />

skip 6 inches forward, then weld 2, and so on. Again this is to prevent<br />

too much heat build up in the sheet metal. I will say that when I<br />

stopped welding sometimes I could hear the metal popping because<br />

of heat distortion. After seeing the bare insides of the car I was almost<br />

shocked to find the small amount of metal that keeps my backside<br />

from touching the road!<br />

So, the floorpan is in place but I do have a small gap where the<br />

steering rack goes. To make a secure connection, I bought some 20<br />

gauge sheet metal to overlap the old and new sections of floorpan.<br />

There are a lot of bends and angles in this location, so I decided to<br />

patch the gap with many small pieces about 4 inches square. I had to<br />

hand form every inch of the piece because of the multiple<br />

compound angles and curves. This was very challenging and<br />

rewarding at the same time. All I had to work with was a small body<br />

hammer and the anvil on my 5 inch bench vise. I had to be very<br />

creative as to how I was going to form the sheet metal. Every piece<br />

took at least an hour to form. I had to shape it, lie on my back to check<br />

it, re-shape, lie on my back, re-shape, etc. I took my time with this<br />

process because I knew I needed intimate contact between the metal<br />

to get a good weld. When I had a piece ready, I tack-welded it in place.<br />

That is very challenging because you can’t really get the MIG weld gun<br />

in the tight confines of this area. I had to be a little creative to make<br />

this work. Also, since I am upside down all of the sparks will drop<br />

down on me. I got a few nice burns from this task. I could have<br />

invested in a nice leather welder’s jacket, but I am just too cheap.<br />

With the floorpan done I needed to think about how to protect<br />

the metal from rust. I had decided very early on to use POR15 as a<br />

preventative undercoat. This works differently than most other rust<br />

inhibitors I have seen. It works by forming a barrier for rust to travel.<br />

Most other inhibitors undergo a chemical reaction to convert the<br />

iron oxide to a more stable form. The product information for the<br />

POR15 says it is very tough and impact resistant. Therefore, I<br />

decided to use it on the floorpan, trunk, wheel wells, and engine bay.<br />

I had to remove the undercoating from these areas using a propane<br />

torch, spatula, and wire wheel. It is very difficult to get into the inner<br />

rear fender area but I felt it was important to verify that there was no<br />

rust hidden deep in the structure. I also wanted to make sure that I<br />

would seal it with the POR15 which adheres best to “seasoned” metal.<br />

Once the undercoating was removed I lightly sanded the metal to<br />

provide good adhesion. I prepared the metal surface as instructed by the<br />

manufacturer and was ready to apply the paint. POR15 is a watery thin<br />

liquid that the manufacturer recommends applying with a paint brush.<br />

It can be sprayed but must be thinned to apply correctly. Using paint<br />

brushes was cheaper and didn’t require me to buy a spray gun.<br />

The instructions recommend wearing gloves as once the paint<br />

has dried it cannot be removed from skin until the skin is shed by<br />

natural processes. I also used a respirator for organic solvents. So<br />

after using a tack rag to verify that the car was perfectly clean, I mixed<br />

up some of the paint and began to apply it to the bottom of the car. I<br />

soon realized that the paint was so thin that it would run down the<br />

paint brush, over my gloves and right down my sleeve. I was extra<br />

careful to not lie under where I was painting at that point and to stay<br />

away from areas already painted. Since the paint is thin, it would<br />

run and drip off of the car so there are a lot of little puddles on my<br />

garage floor.<br />

After I completed painting the floorpan I took off the<br />

respirator and almost passed out from the fumes in my garage (the<br />

garage door was open!). Man, that is powerful stuff. Well, by the time<br />

I finished painting the underside of the car, the paint had dried on my<br />

arm. I tried to remove it by pouring thinner on my skin, no luck.<br />

Then I tried brake cleaner, no luck. This stuff sticks to your skin just<br />

like the manufacturer says. By the way, being an old chemist, it was<br />

common for us to clean our hands in what is now considered to be<br />

carcinogenic. So, unless you want to shorten your life, don’t pour<br />

chemicals on your body! It took about 3 weeks to come off my arm<br />

(my co-workers quietly wondered what disease I had since I had these<br />

large black spots on me).


At a later date I painted the front and rear inner fender<br />

area, the engine bay, and the interior of the car. If you’re counting,<br />

this took 4 quart size cans at $32 each. The manufacturer recommends<br />

that two coats be applied. In order to fill some small holes<br />

around the car I bought some POR epoxy. This is a two-part epoxy<br />

that is activated by water. I used this material to smooth out the<br />

rough weld joints and any small holes. After this I would apply the<br />

second POR15 coat. Because it had been 2 months since I applied<br />

the first coat of POR I had to scuff sand the first coat to give the<br />

second one something to “bite” to. I used some 180 grit sandpaper I<br />

had lying around to scuff all the areas then applied the final coat<br />

of POR15. This only took 2 quart size cans (I did not paint the<br />

passenger compartment with a second coat).<br />

The POR15 is available in clear, silver, flat, or gloss black. I tried<br />

both the flat and gloss black. I prefer the shine of the gloss black.<br />

However, it is tough to tell where I painted previously. My recommendation<br />

would be to use the flat black, then put a coat of gloss so<br />

that you can tell where it has been painted. The paint does not leave<br />

a perfect finish as it has some runs and experiences solvent pop<br />

(evaporation of solvent under the hardened outer surface resulting<br />

in a small bubble that has popped). It is my plan to leave the inner<br />

fenders, trunk, and engine bay with the gloss black paint. It is my<br />

understanding that the very early 911s had black inner fender wells<br />

up until about 1972.<br />

I kind of like this look as it gives a nice contrast to the red<br />

paint I plan on using. Additionally, some owners I have discussed<br />

this with say that when fender wells get dirty the black is more<br />

difficult to tell versus the color matched.<br />

New Member Party<br />

Dave and I were excited to be going to the New<br />

Member Party. After all, we attended our first New<br />

Member Party back in 2003 BEFORE the <strong>February</strong><br />

delivery of Dave’s new Boxster. He only had the VIN<br />

number, but had already joined PCA, and we were anxious<br />

to meet other Porsche owners. We were welcomed by the<br />

great folks in the Maverick Region and learned about the<br />

many activities available to us.<br />

So here we came, ready to meet new members and share<br />

the love of cars with them. We were pleased to have such a<br />

good turnout, but after all, the weather was BEAUTIFUL<br />

…who wouldn’t want to be out on a day like that?<br />

I was enjoying this conversation immensely and noticed<br />

that Dave was still visiting with Michael, the red 356 owner –<br />

so motioned for them to come on over. We introduced Jack<br />

and Michael, and they shook hands and then studied each<br />

other a bit…seemed like they had met before, but thought it<br />

was probably at a 356 meeting.<br />

Early on we met Michael Epping, a nice young fellow<br />

who has a red 356. Since Dave had a 356 in college at Penn<br />

State, they enjoyed a brief discussion. Meanwhile, I came up<br />

to someone I had not seen before…but looking at his<br />

nametag, I immediately recognized the name. I had seen<br />

messages from Jack Griffin on the Maverick discussion<br />

group frequently. He spends a lot of time with other Porsche<br />

groups – the 356 Club, 914 Club, and 912 Club. He is very<br />

interested in vintage rallies and tours. He doesn’t attend<br />

many Mav events, but had come that day, in his black 356.<br />

This went on, then suddenly it clicked – they had raced<br />

on the same team 15 years ago. Back then there was an<br />

indoor Go Cart track out on White Settlement called the<br />

Indoor Grand Prix. They held endurance races with 5 on a<br />

team, going 250 laps. Jack drove there often, and one night<br />

his team was short a driver. You can guess the rest…Michael<br />

Epping was there as a single driver in a team set-up. As he<br />

stood around Jack asked him to fill in on his team. They<br />

continued to drive together for 2 or 3 months, then Michael<br />

left Texas for about 12 years. He moved back a couple of<br />

years ago, now lives in Keller, and had come to the New<br />

Member party to find other 356 owners.<br />

Whatever your favorite car is, this time it was the 356 that<br />

brought them back together. Just another example of what<br />

can happen at our Mav events…expect the unexpected.<br />

Driver Education At MotorSport Ranch<br />

May 28-29, <strong>2005</strong> in conjunction with<br />

PCA CLUB RACE sponsored by:<br />

Maverick Region PCA invites you to participate<br />

in a solo-only two-day PCA Driver Education event<br />

at Motorsport Ranch. Drive the 1.7 mile, 11 turn purpose<br />

built road course featuring off camber turns and<br />

elevation changes at this “Sports Car Country Club.”<br />

This DE will be for drivers who are already soloqualified<br />

in the Blue, Yellow, White, and Red run<br />

groups at Maverick, Lone-Star, and other PCA<br />

regions. The DE will be run in conjunction with our<br />

Maverick Club Race weekend as was done last year.<br />

All cars must be inspected for track worthiness (tech)<br />

prior to the event. Tech locations, dates, and forms,<br />

along with further information will be sent with your<br />

acceptance.<br />

Event registration is open immediately. The<br />

cost per driver is $215 for two days, payable to<br />

Maverick Region PCA. Each entrant fee covers the<br />

entire weekend, typical DE format and track time,<br />

and includes one shirt and one admission to the<br />

Sunday banquet. Applications need payment to be<br />

processed. Sorry, due to limited availability we are<br />

unable to issue refunds once you've been accepted<br />
