Bluebonnet/Hill Counrty Tour Photo by Andy Miller by Clara Lewis We gathered at the quaint old Courthouse in Hillsboro where we were met by first time tourers Phil Childrey, Bryan & Joy Corbell and Troy & Debbie Stephen. After receiving our packets of information giving us each day’s tour stops, maps, menus and some local history, we had a brief meeting with tour guides Ted Glover and Andy Miller. Then it was time to hit the roads. One of our stops was at Garven Store in Mountain Home, one of the oldest remaining convenient stores in Texas. They have made some new improvements since we were last there. They had new restrooms and thatched roofs over the tables for shade. Although we heard the peacocks around, we never saw them. Then it was on to Coopers BBQ in Llano for lunch. Each year is a challenge at Coopers due to their popularity. This year we managed to get there ahead of all the Harley Davidson bikers that also tour the Hill Country. Next it was on to the Willow City Loop to see all the wildflowers and bluebonnets. Sadly, this year we were either too early or too late depending on whom you asked, as there were next to none to be seen. We went on to Fredericksburg where some of our tour stayed to shop, tour the Admiral Nimitz Museum (which was great), or headed on to The Haven River Inn to wash and gas the cars and rest up for our dinner and lodging there for the night. After breakfast at the Inn James Dean (yes, the movie star) joined Andy and Cindy Miller for a great ride of winding, curvy, and hilly roads until James was James Dean made part of the trip. discovered at our next rest stop Photo by Andy Miller and removed from the license plate. Lunch (a lot of lunch) was at House Pasture Cattle Co. and a little later we had dessert at Love Creek Orchards in Medina, "The Apple Capital of Texas,” where you can have apple pie, apple cobbler, apple bread, apple ice cream and can purchase anything apple including trees, cookbooks, preserves and much more. Then it was back to the Inn to again wash and gas the cars and rest up for dinner in Kerrville at the Y. O. Ranch Resort Hotel, where we encountered an artisan selling her one-of-a-kind jewelry. The final day had 75% newly-found road additions to the Hill Country Tour. We ended up in Hico to have some great pies at the Koffee Kup and to say our goodbyes, but had to settle for some great chocolate across the road as "The Kup" runnith over with townspeople and our Harley friends. Come join us next time! The Haven River Inn provided plenty of places to rest . . . 18
