Another Winning Founders’ Day Gala

Each November the Maverick Region celebrates its 1962
founding with a gala at which the winners of the year's driving
events are honored, next year's officers are installed, and money
is raised to benefit our charity, the Hope Shelter. It is an eclectic
event, a mixture of past and future, both poignant and joyful.
This year Founder’s Day was held at the Hilton DFW Lakes in
Grapevine – an appropriately glittery backdrop for the Casino for
Charity action and the more than 130 Mavericks who attended,
many in black-tie. Peter Schutz, CEO of Porsche AG from 1981-
1988, was our speaker, bringing more glamour and excitement to the
evening by sharing his memories of Porsche’s return to, and
dominance of, international racing events during his tenure as well
as the engineering of the biggest positive financial turn around in
Porsche sales history.

Mr. Schutz also significantly added to the treasures, and
finances, of the Silent Auction by donating autographed copies of his
book, Driving Force: Extraordinary Results with Ordinary People
(Entrepreneur Press, 2003), which brought in more than $1,000 for
the Hope Shelter! Casino “donations” and other auction items
(including a membership to MotorSport Ranch won by a thrilled
Monda Degan) added $1,500 more.
AX, TT, Top Driver, and even an award for Cone Killing, were
given out. We had Rally series trophies, and Club Race and Drivers’
Education recognitions. Then our special award for outstanding
club service, The Richard Selcer Memorial Trophy, was given to
Wendy Shoffit - along with a standing ovation for all her work on
behalf of the Maverick community.
Event organizers Ed & Tracey Gross, Jan Mayo and Wendy even
arranged to document that Mavericks clean up well: Linda
Bambina and Charlie Davis set up a “Maverick Glamour Shots”
studio. They snapped proofs, printed and delivered the photos at
the end of the evening as a special souvenir of another fabulous
Founder’s Day.
If you didn’t make it to this one, put it on your 2006 calendar
right now: “November, someplace wonderful, with the people with
the cars.”
