The Inside Track<br />

Those of you blessed with excellent memories (or<br />

a <strong>July</strong> 2005 <strong>Slipstream</strong>) may remember that after<br />

last year's event I boldly forecasted an even bigger<br />

and better Club Race/DE weekend for <strong>2006</strong>. As it<br />

turned out, it was bigger and better in ways I hadn't<br />

even imagined at the time. As in the past, all of the<br />

Chairs, Co-Chairs, National Staff, Sponsors and the<br />

many volunteers did an outstanding job. On the<br />

whole, things ran so smoothly that it looked easy.<br />

Believe me, if something that complicated can be made to look easy, it is<br />

because of all the excellent planning and hard work that has taken place<br />

beforehand. So, a huge thank you goes out to everyone who helped make<br />

the weekend so successful! If I attempted to list all the names, it would<br />

take all the available space in <strong>Slipstream</strong>.<br />

Back to the “bigger and better” part. Last year we held our first Club<br />

Race at MSR on the original 1.7 mile track and it was great. This year we<br />

had the new, bigger 3.1 mile circuit that provided even more fun and challenges.<br />

We grew from 65 to 82 club racers and had 63 DE participants.<br />

We increased the schedule from two to three races, two Sprints and an<br />

Enduro and had significantly more track time available for DE participants.<br />

We even upped the ante in the food department with a cookout<br />

Saturday evening and a catered meal Sunday evening. For this we thank<br />

our good friends at Boardwalk Porsche and Performance Speed Tech.<br />

It will certainly be an uphill climb to top this year’s event. However,<br />

it is never a good idea to underestimate the capabilities of the many<br />

Maverick volunteers, so, once again, don't be surprised if 2007 brings<br />

another “bigger and better” weekend!<br />

Maverick Minutes<br />

Rocky paused the start of the meeting while<br />

Dennis Chamberlain redirected my attention<br />

with his busily snapping shutter. He said he<br />

needed new pictures of the board, but how can one<br />

concentrate on Rocky while that shutter is snapping<br />

and the flash is flashing and everybody is watching.<br />

Rocky regained control by starting with Dennis<br />

who had to put down his camera so he could talk.<br />

The Hunan Happy Hour was fun but they had unusually bad service<br />

that evening. Seems it was only at Tracey and Wendy’s table because<br />

Lanean said she had great service. The next Happy Hour is at Go Fish<br />

where the menu is not cheap plus that night is game 4 for the<br />

Mavericks. Dennis is expecting another small crowd. This month’s<br />

ads were run by Tracey before heading to Wendy to publish so there<br />

should be no errors.<br />

Lanean was looking ahead on the calendar and noted that the<br />

Sept Board Meeting falls on the Tues after Labor Day. Hackberry<br />

Country Club will change their normal Monday close day to that<br />

Tuesday in order to stay open for Labor Day. Our Board Meeting will<br />

move to Wed 9/6.<br />

The Hope Shelter has started sheet rock and tape/bedding work<br />

on two rooms. It’s going slow because the labor is being donated by<br />

a single gentleman working by himself at night. Lanean is working<br />

on getting some experienced volunteers that can go out over the next<br />

couple of weeks. With this done the painting will be next.<br />

Lanean expressed a huge Thank You to Wendy Shoffit, Annette<br />

Snodgrass and Tracey Gross for their help with Hospitality during the<br />

Memorial Day Club Race.<br />

While the “Thanks” were going around Bryan Bell noted that the<br />

Trivia games have been great. He sends a big Thanks to Bob<br />

Kuykendall. Since he had the floor Bryan continued with his report<br />

that Time Trials #2 and #3 went fairly well. He was finally awake for<br />

Time Trial #4 and Autocross #3. The autocross attendance was at 58<br />

and he was pleased with that. Bryan’s looking at the 2007 calendar<br />

and in preparation to reserve dates wants to know the track weekends<br />

so he can schedule around them. Rocky asked about his intention to<br />

raise the fee for non-P cars and Bryan intends to do that starting next<br />

year rather than confuse things in the middle of this season. He will<br />

also lower the fee for P-cars by the same $5. Bryan asked if the board<br />

had anything they wanted done differently this year and was<br />

answered with a no and resounding thanks for the great job he’s been<br />

doing. Bryan had another thanks for Mike Lockas who did a good<br />

job on a worker-info sheet at the last event.<br />

Rocky commented that, while taking pictures at Mineral Wells,<br />

Charlie sometimes positions himself in unsafe locations. He asked<br />

Charlie to just be aware of where he was at all times and to forego the<br />

picture in regards to his safety. Charlie responded that he will take<br />

more care and Rocky had another thanks for Charlie’s ponytail….<br />

Something about now he doesn’t need to grow one to see what it<br />

would look like and that proceeded into more ponytail conversation.<br />

When the furor died down Charlie relayed a comment he heard<br />

from the Trailer Posting person at the last event, asking that sheets be<br />

sorted by Car Number since the posting person often has trouble<br />

finding the car/driver. That started conversation about the posting<br />

sheets also being used by drivers to see how they’re doing relative to<br />

others in their class. The end result is that the posting sheets can be<br />

sorted by any manner.<br />

Charlie continued with recap of the Z-Club event that he,Wendy<br />

and Lisa Steele worked. The Z-Club gave them dinner and a shot<br />

glass and donated $1,000 to the Hope Shelter. Charlie noted that they<br />

run with fewer rules than we do and that we appreciate our events<br />

even more. Wendy thanks Lisa for helping her with timing.<br />

Mark Gluck is on top of the insurance requests. He emails the<br />

certificates to event chairs, which they print and have on hand.<br />

Tracey Gross reporting for herself and Ed that they need to let go<br />

of the Goodie Store. With doing the Social events for the year plus<br />

other new activities at home they are overloaded. Please please, if you<br />

are reading this and are interested get in touch with Tracey or Ed<br />

Gross or President Rocky or any of the people on the board page.<br />

Tracey continued to report on May at Mayo’s. The beverage<br />

purchases were high so the left overs will be split with sodas going to<br />

the Father’s Day Picnic and beer/wine going to the Club Race. In<br />

looking at the Father’s Day picnic receipts from last year she’s<br />

questioning buying beer. We all agreed a family picnic could do<br />

without beer. She is needing rsvp’s for the Murder Mystery at Saltgrass<br />

with June 15 being the deadline. Reminder that the Rangers v.Yankees<br />

baseball game RSVP is <strong>July</strong> 1 with half price tickets at $11.50.<br />

Back on the wine theme Tracey checked the interest in doing<br />

another wine tasting event in Plano. She’s looking at a Thursday<br />

night (not to conflict with a Happy Hour) in Sept or Oct. Stay<br />

tun…..YEEEECH, scramble with chair flying to the floor. Train of<br />

thought was stopped by a very large bug which Mark Gluck crunched<br />

with the heel of his shoe. Thank You Very Much.<br />

Tracey, trying to regain her composure now wanted to make a<br />

point of some unbecoming behavior during a tug-of-war over a beer<br />

cooler at the Club Race. She, Lanean and Wendy were very embarrassed.<br />

There was a large miscommunication which resulted in less<br />

than proper behavior by several people. It has been addressed off line.<br />

Speaking of the Club Race, though (this wasn’t Tracey’s<br />

report - we were on the topic). There were some incidents during race<br />

sessions which caused the Green DE run group to be shorted significantly.<br />

Unfortunately the weekend event is run on CR schedule with<br />

DE sessions provided in between race sessions. Since it is a CR venue<br />

run on their schedule, the DE groups bear the brunt if delays occur.<br />

Future event advertising will state this fact more clearly so DE<br />

entrants aren’t taken by surprise if their session is changed. Another<br />

one of those “communication” things that the board is addressing.<br />

Jeff Atkins brought the checkbook and copies of final annual<br />

budget, which he was calling a Wish List.<br />

Joel reported that the membership information is finally flowing<br />

freely. He has provided Wendy and Dennis their info. He was asked<br />

if anyone proof-read the directory and Joel said he has to retype every<br />

new and updated entry every month. Knowing Joel’s typing skills<br />

will help you understand if you see errors in the Directory.<br />

Wendy said June <strong>Slipstream</strong> was in the mail today (we received<br />

ours in 2 days). TriWinn says the Dallas Post Office is improving but<br />

Wendy still wants to move it back to Fort Worth. Production was<br />

delayed a little while Wendy had MAJOR computer issues. (Wendy<br />

with computer problems? What’s the world coming to?) She’s still<br />

resolving problems with the software and asked for $500 for the<br />

upgrade. Motion was made and passed.<br />

During my turn I brought up the ever popular subject of voting<br />

on the By Laws. We had a sort of successful attempt at the April DE<br />

but still failed to gather the required number of votes to make it fly.<br />

Rocky announced that the re-vote will take place at Founder’s Day in<br />

November where we will have the right number of members in<br />

attendance and can be sure to gather the proper number of ballots.<br />

Joe McGlohen needs the Autocross radios during CR weekends.<br />

Bryan Bell was most agreeable and will work with Joe next year.<br />

Rocky had the Stewards report from the Club Race and it was<br />

very positive towards the racers and the workers. He suggests there<br />

be a blend line painted at pit entrance as that part of the track is a<br />

potentially dangerous location. The Club Race team is anticipating<br />

our event growing to three Race groups. If that happens there won’t<br />

be any DE sessions to have to communicate with.<br />

From The Driver’s Seat<br />

The Care and Feeding of Volunteers<br />

Volunteers... what are they exactly and what<br />

do they do? The official definition of the<br />

verb to volunteer is this: 1. To perform or<br />

offer to perform a service of one's own free will; 2.<br />

To do charitable or helpful work without pay.<br />

Over the past few months, I’ve come across several situations<br />

in which volunteers were *grossly* mistreated. I’m not just talking<br />

about the Porsche Club here, many other organizations struggle<br />

with this similar problem. What I’d like to do is mention a few<br />

items of etiquette in dealing with volunteers in any organization.<br />

When dealing with volunteers, remember that they’re<br />

human beings, just like you (assuming you believe yourself to be<br />

human). Are you acting like a human being in the way you’re<br />

communicating with them at all times? If not, STOP. Remember<br />

the Golden Rule - Do unto others as you would have them do<br />

unto you. If you wouldn’t want someone berating you, don’t<br />

berate them. It’s simple.<br />

A volunteer is freely giving of his or her time to provide a<br />

service. Maverick Region Porsche Club volunteers are everywhere.<br />

They are the ones who plan, organize, and execute all the<br />

tasks needed for these wonderful events we all enjoy. Let me reiterate<br />

that . . . they’re freely doing what needs to be done so YOU<br />

can have fun. For those of you who have not taken a peek behind<br />

the wizard’s curtain, you have no idea what all is involved. You<br />

might be astounded to hear about the number of hours involved<br />

in each and every part of even the (seemingly) smallest event.<br />

Our club’s volunteers are not paid. Some are fortunate<br />

enough to receive compensation in the form of entry fees, but I,<br />

for one, haven’t seen a check in years! *wink* So, what do you<br />

wonder do they get instead? Appreciation, adulation, a pat on the<br />

back, or a simple attaboy/girl.<br />

Now, am I trying to complain about the hours? No, I’ll save<br />

that for another article. *snicker* What I AM trying to say is that<br />

if during an event something isn’t going according to the way you<br />

want it to go, before you go off half-cocked and start yelling for<br />

whatever reason at our precious volunteers, just stop and<br />

THINK. Do you really think that these people MEANT for this<br />

bad thing to happen or was it an unfortunate series of events that<br />

ended up at that point? Do you think berating or yelling at them<br />

will make them want to help you? Is what you want WORTH<br />

making someone feel so badly?<br />

Without volunteers, there is no organization, no events, no<br />

fun. Put yourself in their drivers’ seat and see what the view looks<br />

like. You know who you are. Do better next time and the time<br />

after that and the time after that. I thank you and all the other<br />

volunteers thank you.<br />

Preserving Memories<br />

Recently I added a new link to the home page of our website.<br />

Did you see it? The one that says, “Photos from TT #2 & #3<br />

are now available?” It's also available on the Autocross and<br />

Time Trial Events page. If you don't know what I'm talking about,<br />

put down <strong>Slipstream</strong> and go check it out. I'll wait…<br />

Pretty cool, huh? (And for those of you who didn't actually<br />

go look at the site, it's… pictures.) So now you're thinking, “But<br />

Steve, what about Club Racing pictures and Tour pictures,<br />

Happy Hour pictures?” Well, that's where you get to participate.<br />

You do want to participate don't you? Don't make me send<br />

Wendy after you.<br />

Here's how it works:<br />

1. Go to www.flickr.com and sign up for a free account<br />

Flickr is a web site that provides photo-hosting, plus a whole<br />

lot more. Its community aspect is what we're hoping to take<br />

advantage of. Once you have your account set up, go search for<br />

the user “Maverick_photos” and add it as a Contact. Now you'll<br />

see any photos we add, and we'll see your great pictures as well.<br />

2. Upload and “tag” your club event photos<br />

While you can upload pictures of (just about) anything to<br />

Flickr, we're mainly interested in shots you've captured at Club<br />

events. When you add pictures to your account, the system will<br />

ask you to add a title, description and “tags.” Tags are one- or two-<br />

word descriptors for the picture that allow users to find “like”<br />

photos. For Maverick events, we are using the following:<br />

a. PCA<br />

b. Maverick<br />

c. <strong>2006</strong> (or appropriate year)<br />

d. EVENT (e.g. “time trial” or autocross or “happy hour”)<br />

Hint: enclose two (or more) word tags in quotes<br />

3. Browse all the other photos uploaded from other club<br />

members who are as excited about participating as you are!<br />

If you've added your tags correctly, your pictures will now<br />

show up with all the other pictures for that event. I will add links<br />

to the event pages on our website, and as more people participate,<br />

more photos will become available.<br />

This is a new process, and questions or comments are<br />

welcome. If you're having trouble using the site, let me know and<br />

I'll try to help you out. If you think of a way to make it better or<br />

easier, I definitely want to know (webmaster@mavpca.org).<br />

Our main goal with this effort is to provide a way for more<br />

people to see what our Club is all about - how many different<br />

ways there are to be involved, how much fun we have and what<br />

great people are involved in all our Maverick Events!<br />

May at Mayo’s<br />

Nearly 70 Maverick Region members turned out for the annual<br />

May at Mayo’s dinner social. Temperatures were warm, but the<br />

breeze through the Mayo Performance shop doors kept it<br />

manageable. It was an easy choice to make for that yummy Babe’s Fried<br />

Chicken and the visions of Porsche car loveliness.<br />

Ed and Tracey Gross continue to do a fabulous job as social<br />

chairs as they provided plenty of sodas, beer, and wine to<br />

accompany all that comfort food! Too bad it was too hot for some to<br />

drink the wine, as there was a ton left over.<br />

This event always seems to bring out some of the people who we<br />

don’t often see. This year was no different. We were joined by the<br />

Bambinas, Dugans, deJongs, Krupps, Suttons, Searses (complete<br />

with baby Ryan), Vaughan Garrett and Angela Persichitte, Steve<br />

Perrin, and Al Zim. I’m sure I’ve forgotten some people, but I think<br />

you can see how it would be hard to remember everyone. It’s always<br />

such a casual, fun event with no agenda, no time clocks, no series<br />

points, and no trophies. Oh wait, no trophies could be a bad thing!<br />

Anyway, we had a great time. Hope you can make it next year!<br />

Drivers’ Education at the Club Race<br />

The weather: Nearly perfect. Breezy, not too hot, nary a drop of<br />

rain. The track: Amazing. A warm surface for sticky tires. A 3.1-<br />

mile, technically challenging course.<br />

The schedule: Seat time that felt like it would never end! The<br />

usual eight runs on Saturday and Sunday were capped off by three 40-<br />

minute, that's right 40-minute runs, all before noon on Memorial Day.<br />

The sponsorship and hospitality: First class-and too many<br />

sponsors to list! Our friends at Boardwalk Porsche of Plano were<br />

merely the leaders of a long and distinguished list which included<br />

Performance Speed Tech (sponsors of a wonderful Saturday night<br />

barbecue), Fifth Gear Motorsports, and many others. Participants<br />

returned home with not one, but two commemorative shirts. Our<br />

sponsors ensured that the cold water was plentiful, and so was the<br />

beer in the evening!<br />

finished. Shutterbugs were captivated by practice starts and fun races,<br />

where Josemanuel Gutierrez, John Crosby, Gerald Isbell, and Keith<br />

Olcha amongst others showed off some very capable machinery-with<br />

even more capable driving. These guys gave most everybody<br />

something to shoot for.<br />

Monday dawned nearly clear, and early arrivals saw the track<br />

quickly illuminated by a blazing sunrise as they enjoyed coffee and<br />

donuts before the drivers' meeting. At the meeting, John Sandusky<br />

diplomatically explained the schedule issues from Sunday, and the<br />

talk then quickly turned to the enviable task at hand for all: Three<br />

morning runs-and not the usual 20- or 25-minute runs, but<br />

40 minutes apiece! It did not take long for even the most mathematically<br />

challenged driver to realize he would put in nearly as much seat<br />

time that morning as usually happens in an entire weekend. Old hand<br />

John wisely cautioned all to monitor their fatigue and their water<br />

intake, advice that seemed to be well taken as several drivers stopped<br />

for short breaks in the hot pit, and very few paid the black-flag price<br />

for inattention. For many drivers, however, maintenance issues came<br />

to the fore, as brake pads and tires faced the blistering assault of<br />

nearly two hours of all-out speed on a tight, challenging track. Jerry<br />

Hiatt and Phil Hallenbeck, among others, found themselves visiting<br />

Bobby Archer for new tires or the mounting of on-hand spares, as the<br />

tires which started the weekend were either fresh at the start or<br />

finished well before the end.<br />

While we all realize holiday weekends are strictly rationed on the<br />

calendar, the comment of one departing driver sums up this event:<br />

“Man, I wish every DE could be just like this.”<br />

Drivers arriving Saturday morning found some good things<br />

which don't change for the Mavericks and their fast friends: the warm<br />

smiles of Lanean Hughes and Annette Snodgrass, plentiful coffee, and<br />

donuts before the drivers’meeting, and the fellowship of Porschephiles<br />

from as far away as northern Oklahoma! Those with a technical<br />

challenge (or just a hankering for a new gadget) were comforted by the<br />

sight of Bobby Archer and crew open and ready for work.<br />

First-time drivers found the new course even more technically<br />

challenging than the near-legendary 1.7-mile original one, but there<br />

were surprisingly few “offs” and even fewer as time wore on. Blair<br />

Hartsfield and the photo gang seemed omnipresent-whenever a<br />

driver would look up just a bit off his turn, he caught a glimpse of the<br />

indefatigable camera crew. Blair and crew had plenty to shoot: Jason<br />

Brodigan had a beautiful black 944 to shake out for the first time,<br />

while Shelly Burbank's Polar Blue 911SC evoked memories of the<br />

similar blue worn by the Gulf-Wyer 917s of yesteryear-and these were<br />

of course but a few of many. The Green group enjoyed an outstanding<br />

car control show by Greg Smith in his BMW 330ci. And the<br />

parade laps that day featured a ride unusual even by Maverick PCA<br />

standards-a black '57 T-bird!<br />

Saturday night's barbecue, hosted by Performance Speed Tech,<br />

bears special mention as does the Sunday awards dinner courtesy of<br />

Boardwalk. A wonderful Texas time was had by all at both events as<br />

the food, beer, and camaraderie flowed freely.<br />

Sunday again dawned a bit cloudy, but whether due to the efforts<br />

of “chaplain” Michael Wingfield or to the general beneficence of the<br />

Lord, not a drop of rain fell to slow what quickly became very fast<br />

sessions. Green drivers were a bit disappointed by a very short run<br />

after lunch (shortened to accommodate the club race schedule), but<br />

were compensated by a longer run late in the day after the club races<br />

PorschePlatz at the Lone Star Grand Prix<br />

Bryan Henderson, PCA Zone 5 Rep, and Lanean Hughes of<br />

Maverick Region coordinated volunteers from the Maverick<br />

(Dallas area), Hill Country (Austin), and Lone Star<br />

(Houston) Regions, who manned the “PorschePlatz” at the recent<br />

Lone Star Grand Prix in Houston, Texas. This event combined<br />

Champ Car and American Le Mans Series races, May 11th through<br />

13th. The races were held on a “street course” layed out around the<br />

Reliant Center sports complex, home of the Houston Texans<br />

NFL football team. PorschePlatz provided parking for Porsches<br />

attending the event and a hospitality tent for Porsche owners to<br />

relax between events, meet the racing teams and drivers, and get<br />

updates on Porsche and the racing scene. The Porsche Race Teams<br />

and a Representative from Porsche AG, along w/Shell Oil<br />

representatives, were among the guest speakers. Momentum<br />

Porsche's Rodger Gay, the dealer liaison to the Lone Star Region<br />

PCA, arranged for a beautiful Cayman S, (which Lanean drove on<br />

a parade lap around the course), a new Cabriolet, and a GT2 to be<br />

exhibited at the Platz, and there was a member Carrera GT on<br />

display as well. This was an excellent chance to meet PCA members<br />

from the southeast and central Texas areas and to recruit non<br />

Motorsports North America hosted PorschePlatz in cooperation<br />

with the International Motorsports Association (IMSA) and the<br />

American Le Mans series, and the PorschePlatz will be repeated at<br />

subsequent races in the series during the year.

Happy Hour at Hunan Dynasty<br />

This was our second happy hour at Hunan Dynasty in Irving,<br />

almost a year to the day from our last visit there. Hunan's has<br />

large portions with reasonable prices, although according to<br />

Terry Gross, the service was “hit and miss” at best. Mine was great,<br />

but I guess I got lucky. One thing that is consistent is the great view.<br />

While we didn't have any brand new members, we had some<br />

members that we don't see very often, including Kevin Hardison<br />

and Lori McCall, and Robyn, Travis and Carole Howard. We had<br />

32 members in total.<br />

For our <strong>July</strong> 20 happy hour we're heading back to Razzoo's<br />

in Irving. It's just west of the I-635 and MacArthur, at 1414<br />

Market Place. Hope to see you there!<br />

You have just joined one of the best and most active PCA<br />

Regions in the country! Some clubs focus solely on social<br />

events, while others focus on just show and shine concours<br />

events. Maverick Region is a club that focuses on providing<br />

our members with the tools necessary to have the ultimate in<br />

driving experiences.<br />

You will notice that our region has many Time Trials,<br />

Autocrosses, and Drivers’ Education (DE) events (in addition<br />

to a yearly Club Race). This has been the spirit of the region<br />

for quite some time. We have some of the finest instructors in<br />

the country. Make sure you take full advantage of the driving<br />

experiences we have to offer.<br />

Racing is not ALL we focus on, though. If racing doesn’t<br />

suit you, we have monthly happy hours, three monthly lunch<br />

gatherings, regular dinner socials, frequent driving tours on<br />

some fabulous roads in and around Texas, driving rallies (fun<br />

for the whole family), and regular opportunities to support<br />

our perpetual charity, the Hope Shelter.<br />

If we don’t have what you’re looking for, just ask us... we<br />

might just add something extra to the calendar.<br />
