THANK YOU Thank you to all the helpers of all sizes. Without the cone pickeruppers, corner watchers, registrars, and instructors these schools would not happen. [ed. A big thank you to Charlie Davis for all the school photographs, including the one of me with my blue hair which will never be seen in print.] Lisa Steele Bob Kuykendall Chairman, Tom Snodgrass Andrea Bell Conner Bell Bryan Bell Mark Steele Ed Gross Jan Mayo 16
Tales from a First Timer by Trish Moncus On a cool Sunday in March at the young age of 47, I was able to experience a first- my first ever driving school event! My husband Les, who has been involved with Porsches forever, as a driver, club member, instructor, official and all around aficionado, felt it was time that I learned what my 06 Cayenne S could do, in a safe and controlled environment and with instructions from someone I wasn’t married to. So he signed me up for Time Trial School 103 and I was ready to try this. We headed out to Mineral Wells on Saturday, so I could have a peek at the track and get an idea what a school was like. My first thought was- Ohmigosh, I’m supposed to drive my Cayenne, which looked like a Winnebago next to all these sports cars, around all of these cones without hitting them and try not to embarrass the Moncus family name- what have I gotten myself in to! By day, I am an executive at Citigroup and pride myself that I can usually adapt to most situations, but I was way out of my element here. At Saturday nights’ dinner, I had nothing to add to the conversation as I realized I’m basically car illiterate and even the women could talk cars!! But things improved on Sunday as I was saved in the form of my instructor, Bryan Bell. Bryan had ‘volunteered’ to take the Cayenne S as he is a Touraeg driver and very comfortable driving the RV, albeit at much faster speeds. So, after a pretty tentative morning and minimal cone damage, we headed into the afternoon of actual time trials and I was nervous. With each lap, I gained more confidence, I stopped pointing at my apex (again, thanks to Bryan), I braked faster, I accelerated quicker- basically, I was pumped and it was cool. At the conclusion of the day, I had achieved my goals; I improved times with each subsequent try, starting at a 101, and ending with an 86, with only 1 DNF. I hadn’t brought shame to the Moncus name and I realized underneath all the SUV-ness of my car beat the heart of a Porsche. It was also helpful that I was surrounded by some of the nicest people, giving me encouragement, sharing their experiences and not making me feel like I was completely illiterate along with a fabulous instructor who knows how to make you take it to the edge you are comfortable with. So I will be back, but next time it will be in the husband’s new Cayman S…… Trish enjoyed maneuvering her “winnebago-ish” Cayenne S Jonathan Lin’s beautiful Cayman S Adam Ussery in a 1973 914 is at home on the course... ... as Edward Romero in his 2006 911 Carrera S 17
