My Thoughts

Alright now, two issues under my belt and I’m
feeling pretty good. A few typos here and
there, but that always happens. Let me know
what you think so far.
Have you looked at the calendar page recently?
Turn back a page and look at all the stuff that’s
happening. You won’t appreciate this but I had to
scrunch the type and enlarge the boxes to get it all to fit. Every
weekend has something Porsche Club that you can do. Can’t do it
all you say?? Yeah, me too. So pick and choose. What’s important
to you?? What’s fun?? What do you really want to get involved
with??
There’s a second two-day Autocross school. I mentioned the
great value of these last month. Now you can continue to hone
those skills at the first autocross and time trial of the season.
Teri Davis is having another Rally. Look at her ad below for
the particulars. Also look at page 15 for the fun pictures of her
February Photo Rally. Now THAT was great fun. Thank goodness
Wendy got lost trying to find the start point. That’s how she knew
the answer to the verbal tie breaker question which popped us
over the top of a four way tie to take third place! The pressure of
competition.
Maybe you prefer socializing more than driving? Tracey is
having another Wine Tasting party. The people that went last year
had so much fun and Premier Wines of Plano enjoyed having us,
as well. In fact they made a major donation to our Founder’s Day
raffle that was very well received. Eh, Keith? And Dennis
Chamberlain’s Happy Hours are always fun filled.
How about a gentle Sunday Drive? Clint Blackman has started
a series of drives to some grand locations: Kilgore East Texas
Oil Museum, The Texas Ranger Museum in Waco, a Cayenne “off
road” tour at Rough Creek Lodge, plus several more.
James has added a fourth lunch opportunity because, as
Brian Scudder pointed out nearly 10 years ago, “Everybody has to
eat lunch.” This one’s in Lewisville at the Spring Creek BBQ on
Round Grove Road.
Now I’m going to send you on a scavenger hunt. Find the
page numbers where all these events are advertised. I’m not handing
out any prizes, but you will still be a winner because now you
know where to join your Fabulous Porsche Friends for whatever
type of event you’re interested in. I’ll see you there!

James joined PCA in 97 and is active in Club
Racing, Drivers Ed, Autocross and Time Trial.
He instructs at DE, AX, and TT. Track Car is
a 78 911SC, and the search for a daily driver
Porsche is in progress. James is a co-owner
of a software development company in
Lewisville.
Mark drivers a Boxster S and has been a
Maverick member since 1999. He is active
with Drivers Education, Tours, and Social
events, as well as with many Hope Shelter
charity projects.
Charlie joined PCA & MR in 1970,
having a 1969 911S. He's been Pres. V-Pres,
Zone Rep, & PCR Chair. He's currently the
914 Advocate and drives the Truxster to
AX/TT events. He has a 1972 911S and a
1973 914 2.0.
Bob has been a member of PCA since 2004
and is active in Autocrosses and Time Trials.
He is also an instructor for Driver’s Ed events
and drives a 1988 911 Carrera.

Catch my Draft
by James Shoffit, the Maverick Region President
Ilove a Parade! Notice that Parade is capitalized.
That means Porsche Parade, not just
any parade. And rather than being a line of
cars, it is a week-long celebration of all things
Porsche with a thousand of your closest PCA
friends.
This year it is being held in sunny San
Diego, California, and it looks like it is going to
be quite an event. [ed. July 1-5, 2007] There will be the standard
competitive events consisting of Concours (the best Porscheonly
car show in America, I'd wager), Rally (trying to follow a
course using instructions, not a map, and finish each leg at
exactly the specified time), Autocross (timed driving event on a
parking lot course lined with cones), and Tech Quiz (answering
100 or more questions about Porsche, PCA, and Parade).
But there will also be lots of other fun activities to do,
such as the Art Show, the Banquets, the Beach Party, the
Cayenne Event, Children's Activities, Gimmick Tour/Rally,
Goodie Store, Radio Controlled Car Racing, Area Tours, USS
Midway Aircraft Carrier, and the Zone Challenge. And there
are plenty of other fun things to do in San Diego - I think it is
impossible to get bored at Parade.
If you have never attended, you can't understand how
much fun we all have when we get together. Wendy and I have
been to Parades from Boise, Idaho, to Hershey, Pennsylvania,
and try to make them all. We did miss the one last year in
Portland, Oregon, but don't want to skip another one! Part of
the fun is seeing cars that are so well kept, and so amazing, and
so rare; but even more fun is seeing the people, the smiles, and
enjoying the company of other Porsche nuts.
Why am I telling you this? Because registration for Parade
opens online on March 6th at 8 AM Eastern Time, which is 7
AM our time! And this Parade, like most recently, will probably
fill up, and so the earlier you get your registration in, the
better chance you have of getting to go. To register online, go
to http://www.pca.org/paraderegistration. Before you can do
that, you MUST already be a registered user on the PCA web
site. Log in now to make sure you are all set before that day.
If you have any problems getting signed in or getting a password
set up, contact me at president@mavpca.org.
If you are not comfortable using the online method of
registering, you may download the paper registration form
from the PCA website. Fill it in and mail it on (or after) March
6th. The postmark date matters, because it will be rejected if
mailed before March 6th.
If you don't have access to the internet, you can call Susan
Brown, Parade Registrar, at (760)707-6063 and request to have
a paper registration form mailed to you. Don’t mail it in,
though, until March 6th.
Bill Dawson, our DE chair for the last few years, has decided
to step down and enjoy driving and instructing again. We
all thank Bill for his wonderful work over the years. This does,
however, give some other talented person the opportunity to
step into that role. If anyone has any great suggestions, please
pass them along to president@mavpca.org.
Another role we are seeking applicants for is DE
Hospitality. This involves getting the catering and donuts set
up as well as managing ice, beverages, and other various items
for the drivers and workers. It isn't terribly time consuming
but it needs to be someone who has at least a passing familiarity
of the track events, a willingness to help, and it would probably
be best if the person was not intending on participating in
the DEs as a driver or instructor.
Our first Lewisville Lunch (2nd Tuesday of each month)
was far more successful than I imagined it would be. I figured
I would be sitting alone at Spring Creek eating my lunch by
myself, but we had a total of six people - Andy Mears, Bill
Middleton, Tom Snodgrass, Chuck McCoy, and Dan Ruehs all
joined me! Let's try to get even more out next time.
In March we have more of the Rallies, Wine Tastings, and
our Autocross and Time Trial schedule gets into full swing. We
also have a Happy Hour event and four area lunches. Check the
calendar online and in Slipstream to see what is coming up.

Maverick Minutes

Maverick Region Feb 2007 Board Meeting
was called to order at 6:53 PM.
James: Discussed the meeting format
briefly, trying to get control. Suggested we vote
on decisions. The club has an old 19” CRT-type
monitor and he asked for advice about what to
do with it. The Board unanimously voted to give it to Joel (who
for some reason actually wanted it?). James announced a few
new appointments: Joel is the Club Race Chair, Clint Blackman
is the Sunday Drive Chair and Bob Bianconi is the Concours
Chair. James emphasized that the Sunday Drives will be safe.
We discussed Concours briefly and decided that we should
charge about $10 to enter the first one, but tabled discussion on
other issues for a month. James announced that the Father's
Day Picnic would not be at the Casey's (as is traditional), but
rather at the Bell's new spread in Parker County. He asked for
info regarding Tours, Rallys, Social Events, Concours, and Club
Race to be sent to Denny for inclusion on the website. We
decided not to automate writing checks. Instead, Joe McGlohen
will send names to Bob Kuykendall prior to DEs and Bob will
hand-write the checks.
National sent us a box of 45th Anniversary decals…MR
must be 45-years old this year? James reported that the
National DE chairman (Pete Tremper) is proposing to outlaw
stock seats when used with a harness (regardless of how many
belts). We discussed this and there were significant objections
to this proposal. The Board suggested that James contact our
Zone Rep regarding this issue. He said he already had contacted
the Zone 5 Rep, the Zone 5 Chief Driving Instructors, and
our Safety Chair, Joe McGlohen.
Tom: Reported that there are LOTS of Ladies signed up for
the Ladies Autocross School. We need volunteers to help out!
Sign up on clubregistration.net. He needs help with staffing for
the technical inspection nights prior to DEs. Tom said he
would work on this. Charlie suggested a way to require fewer
instructors at our Time Trial and Autocross schools, but
nobody liked it.
Joel: Reported we have 1197 Active members. National
reports a total regional membership of 1893 (which includes
Affiliate members). He also reported that we have 22 new
members and one transfer-in. Joel reported that there was a
Club Race meeting last week and that Lisa had agreed to handle
hospitality. Bill Miller and Wendy Shoffit have created an
ad for the next Club Race News and has given it to Jan for
Slipstream.
Bryan: Reported that we need to make the first 2007 payment
for the MineralRing.
Bill: Reported that there are 75 people registered for the
February DE. The late fee kicks in on Saturday, February 10th.
The February, September and October DEs will use the 3.1 mile
course, but the April DE will use the 1.7 mile course, as there
will not be enough corner worker personnel due to a NASCAR
race. They are trying to organize a Mother's Day DE at Eagles
Canyon, but there are a few issues yet to be resolved. He still
needs someone to do DE hospitality. Colin Graidage and Rocky
Johnson are new members of the DE Committee.
Denny: Reported that he has populated the Events section
of the web site. He has some missing information on the contact
page… most notably a couple of pictures.
Christie: Reported that Pay-Pal is up for the Goodie Store.
Mark: Needs information about the March moving events
by February the 20th so that he can get insurance for them (the
deadline is because he will be on vacation after that). He
reports that he has gotten most of the ads to Jan and is continuing
to work on the others.
Lisa: Passed around information on Slipstream advertising.
Total annual ad revenue as of February was $14,750. She
reported a new ad for The Complete Garage.
Tracey: Admitted that after trying for a month to locate
another restaurant in this general area, she was unsuccessful
in locating one with a private room. The board agreed to
continue meeting at Hackberry Creek Country Club. She
stressed that she must give them a three day notice and
encouraged us to keep her informed about our attendance and
meal choices. She reported that the New Member Party went
well. We had 12 new members, which is a lot more than last
year. July 3rd would be our normal board meeting date, but it
conflicts with both the 4th of July holiday and Parade. We
agreed to move it to July 10th.
Bob Bianconi: Said he planned to start the new Concours
series with an easy event. If it is successful, then he will ramp
up the event in the fall a bit. We discussed whether to include
the Father's Day Picnic Concours in his series and decided not
to for the first year.
Jan: Reported that Mike Kuhn is now her assistant. She
needs pictures of Mike, Bob Bianconi, Clint Blackman, and
Caren Cooper for the Board, Officers & Chairs page. [Mark was
seen later taking a picture of Bob B]. She further reported that
the Slipstream deadline is now! She asked that everyone inform
her about what is going on. There is no one author assigned to
cover the recent New Member Party. Instead, she requested that
everybody send her short stories about their experiences with
new members. She has the new Ruf and Park Place ads. She
wondered about the lunch in Lewisville that James is wanting?
I think we decided that it was proper to allow James to have
lunch… he chose Spring Creek Barbecue for some reason. Teri
will organize Lunches in Weatherford real-soon-now…
Teri: Reported that the 1st Rally was successful. It generated
a whopping $77.65 profit, which she gave to Bob K. She gave
the insurance waver to Mark and e-mailed the results to Jan.
Charlie: Since James and Bryan did not mention the issue,
he asked when the 2007 classification spreadsheet will be posted
on the website. We discussed this and hope to have it up this
week. Charlie finally got State Farm Insurance to bill him

instead of Bob Knight (after three tries). The Region owes Bob
a thank you for his patience.
Bob K: Reported that his version of our financial status
agrees with the one that Jeff recently published in Slipstream.
Bob will work with Dennis to see if Dennis' friend can audit our
books.
Dennis: Having missed the last three board meetings and
upon discovering James was the new President, Dennis congratulated
him. However, the meal and cookies must not have set
well with Dennis, as he tried to eat the microphone. The recent
Happy Hour at Uncle Julio's was good, but lightly attended due
to the weather. The next one will be on the 15th of February at
Go Fish… then on March 15th at Saltgrass in Irving.
Robyn: Reported that she likes Charlie, but not his idea
about the Ladies Autocross School. [If you remember, he had
suggested a way to require fewer instructors.]
Travis: Reported that he was having problems running the
macros in the online classification spreadsheet. Charlie and
James will get with him off-line to help with this problem.
Having no cookies left, the meeting was adjourned at 8:38.

You’ve Been Hiding Out There: I Know You Have

The “you” I’m referring to, are those of you who crave a genuine
Maverick Concours. If you read the February issue of
Slipstream you know Concours is on the agenda for this year.
And, to get things kicked off in grand fashion, we will hold our first
Concours at the annual May@Mayo’s event, Saturday May 5th.
What could be better: great food, great friends and a Concours!
So, are there any 356’s in hiding? Waiting for the chance to
escape the garage? How about a few Sharks? I know for sure there
are a bunch of 911’s – of all varieties - waiting to participate. And,
let’s not forget our 914’s, 924-944-968’s and Boxster siblings.
So what can you do to win a trophy? How about a fresh coat
of wax, clean up the interior and clean up your wheels. We’ll be
lightly judging these areas. We will not be looking
into engine compartments or at the undercarriage.
Because this IS a competitive event, the cleaner
your car, the better your chances of winning. You
want bragging rights while munching down that
great Babe’s Chicken, don’t you?
Remember, this is a judged car show, so as
much as you like your 9XX with 3 colors of silver
paint, no floor pan and a gap in the dash where the
Blaupunkt use to be, this is NOT the show for you.
Show the other car. Participants will receive a set of
simple judging criteria, rules, etc.
Your job: Sign up to enter; sign up a buddy;
pass the word; offer to help. To register use the

Since we’re just getting our feet wet into
Maverick Concours, we’ll see how much interest
there is and crank up the judging a bit next time.

New Member Party
Hosted by Brad Nace and Mia Williams
The Maverick Board thanks Brad and Mia for opening their
lovely Plano home for our 2007 New Member Party. We had
nearly 60 people and dozens of sparkling Porsches there.
Vice President, Mark Gluck commented that it was really
nice to drive down the street and park in the midst of such wide
ranging vintage Porsche cars. He’s proud that his 7-yr old Boxster
is becoming a part of that heritage.
Their house was even more spectacular with their amazing
media room! The guys weren’t the only ones who appreciated it.
Wendy Shoffit was particularly impressed with it being multilevel!
Talk about stadium seating!

Bob Lewis welcomes Betty and Jay Norman. Bob had met Betty and Jay at
the December Happy Hour at Rio Mambo’s and had encouraged them to
come to the New Member Party. We hope to see both at more events.

2007 Cimarron Region Dogwood Spring Fling

Get ready to take that Porsche out of storage and prepare both yourself and your car for a great weekend
in Northeastern Oklahoma.
Join the Cimarron Region PCA for its special 10 th annual Dogwood Spring Fling. The event takes place
in the town of Miami, OK, located half way between Tulsa, OK and Springfield, MO on I-44. All of the
surrounding regions are invited to this extravaganza with the beautiful dogwoods in bloom!

REGISTRATION from 5pm to 10pm
At the West’s Party Barn! From the Best Western, go East 4.7 miles on highway 10 to South 621. (Look for PCA event sign)
Turn right onto 621 and go to the last drive and park on the grass. The party starts when you arrive with Beer, Brats, side
fixins (and other libations & surprises).
Saturday, April 14 th
CONCOURS from 9:30 – 12 Noon in front of the Coleman Theater
We will have access to the theater with coffee and light breakfast snacks for attendees. Look for the tech quiz to be given out
during the Concours event. Lunch is open from Noon until 1:30. We usually all get together and go somewhere close.
RALLY starts at 1:30pm from the front parking lot of the Best Western Motel
We will have a drivers meeting in the lot right before the event begins, please be there for instructions.
BANQUET from 6:30pm at the Historic Coleman Theater

SECOND EDITION
Annually Cimarron Region has contributed to the Coleman Theater Restoration project. Last year we
experimented with an auction of Porsche and PCA items provided by those in attendance, the proceeds
going to the Coleman Restoration Project. This was so successful that we will again hold the auction at
the Awards Banquet. An experienced auctioneer will again offer the excitement and humor provided
last year.
Bring that “stuff” that has been collecting dust that another member might get some joy from owning.
Bidding will be in one dollar increments and materials offered will be at the discretion of the auctioneer.

LeMans Champion Davy Jones Joins Racers Ranch

Kaufman County, TX; February 6, 2007 – While Racers Ranch
is designed for passionate drivers with different driving
skills, it will have one member with an experience level that
is tough to match. Davy Jones, considered one of the top drivers
internationally in the 1990s has become a member of Racers Ranch,
the country club for car enthusiasts under construction just east of
Dallas.
A driver on the winning team in the 1996 24 Hour of Le
Mans, Jones also finished second to Buddy Lazier that same year
in the Indianapolis 500. His driving resume includes seven
Winston Cup starts in 1995 as well as eighth and ninth place finishes
in the 1992 and 1993 International Race of Champions
respectfully.
“To have a driver of Davy Jones’ caliber take a look at Racers
Ranch and decide it’s where he would like to drive and host
events speaks volumes of the level of commitment we have to
building a world-class venue,” said Racers Ranch partner Dan
Gage.
Jones, who lives in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, and is founder and
principal of Fast One Inc which specializes in driver training and
motorsport consulting. He said is thrilled about joining Racers
Ranch and extremely impressed with the plans and passion of
partners Gage and Bill Georgas.
“Racers Ranch is simply a beautiful place,” said Jones. “Bill
(Georgas) and Dan’s model certainly sets it apart from other racing
facilities. With the shared-ranch, the equestrian center and
country club aspect, Racers Ranch will be a very exclusive venue
for its members.”
The Alan Wilson-designed road course also adds to the
appeal of Racers Ranch to those passionate about driving highperformance
sports cars Jones believes.
“Alan designs and builds a lot of tracks,” he said. “Racers
Ranch is his latest and greatest. I have driven the initial cut of the
track. It is well thought out with a very nice flow through beautiful
countryside. It will be tremendous.”
Racers Ranch is scheduled to begin laying asphalt on the
world-class 4 mile road course in the spring of 2007. Racers
Ranch also includes a 1,300 acre shared ranch with limited home
sites surrounded by conservation preserved land. Owners will
enjoy a variety of other club amenities including a secured-gated
entrance, clubhouse, pool and equestrian center.

Happy Hour at Uncle Julio’s

Uncle Julio’s is one of the more recent additions to our
happy hour circuit, coming to us courtesy of Monda
Degan. This was one of those cold, wet weather nights,
and as a result, I didn’t expect to see many Mavericks. As it
turned out, we had a warm, happy group of thirty, all of whom
apparently felt it was a perfect night for hot Mexican Food and
(go figure) frozen margaritas.

Walther were discussing their
recent skiing trip to Colorado, and
their upcoming adventure to
Kilimanjaro. I asked if they would
make sure that Cathy carried the
camera so we could see a photo of
the summit (since the Las Vegas
odds makers have established
Cathy as being more probable of
making it to the top). All the time,
Mark was asking the bartenders
Cathy Walther about the ingredients of the drinks,
because certain liquors give him a
headache. Sounds like a candidate for altitude sickness,
wouldn’t you say? The real drink to try next time is the Uncle
Julio special brew Sangria. Unlike Mark, I didn’t even want
to know what was in it.
The “car talk” guys showed up –

entertained with stories about
Hollywood Finishes – Ed’s Fort

and Ray Magliozzi would have been
proud. This time they brought
their better half Janet (I believe she’s
married to Mark). Janet and Mark

Welcome, New Members!
You have just joined one of the best and most active PCA
Regions in the country! Some clubs focus solely on social events,
while others focus on just show and shine concours events. Maverick
Region is a club that focuses on providing our members with the tools
necessary to have the ultimate in driving experiences.
You will notice that our region has many Time Trials, Autocrosses,
and Drivers’ Education (DE) events (in addition to a yearly Club Race).
This has been the spirit of the region for quite some time. We have some
of the finest instructors in the country. Make sure you take full advantage
of the driving experiences we have to offer.
Racing is not ALL we focus on, though. If racing doesn’t suit you,
we have monthly happy hours, three monthly lunch gatherings, regular
dinner socials, frequent driving tours on some fabulous roads in
and around Texas, driving rallies (fun for the whole
family), and regular opportunities to support our perpetual charity,
the Hope Shelter.
If we don’t have what you’re looking for, just ask us... we might
just add something extra to the calendar.
