My Thoughts

The Christmas presents are put
away, the in-laws have gone
home, New Years’ resolutions
have been made and already broken. Know
what that means? It’s time to start Driving!
And we have some events set up and ready
for you. As we’ve done for many years
we’re starting the year with some autocross
and time trial schools.
January 17 is a Ladies/Teens school at Pennington
Field parking lot H.E.B. ISD. It’s close and convenient for
any and every body. This event is specifically designed and
intended for wives or ladies new to the club that may feel a
little intimidated with “everybody” there watching as well
as new teen drivers. It’s great fun as well as instructional.
Let that settle a couple weeks and the Autocross 101
school is March 2. Same place and same type format but is
open to everyone so ladies and teens you get a second shot
at this level of instruction.
Or are you feeling pretty good about your autocross
skills but want a refresher to tidy up some rough spots?
Autocross 102 and Time Trial 103 schools are March 15
and 16 in Mineral Wells. You get a little more speed and
action going on out there.
Maybe you’re already a seasoned driver and itching to
get out and stretch? March 8 and 9 is our first DE for 2008
and we’re going back to Eagles Canyon. This is serious
one-on-one instruction on a track. Speeds are higher and
other cars are closer. There is passing (with a point permission)
and the adrenaline factor is much higher. And boyoh-boy
is it fun.
For the time and money invested, all these driving
schools are well worth the expenditure. You’ll have some
great fun and you’ll learn and/or refine some very valuable
skills. Plus you’ll make a bunch of really great friends, like
ME! Can’t wait to see you there.
Now I’d like to inroduce you to Clayton Rote. While
walking into the Christmas Party at Lee and Linda Wilkins
home (THANK YOU VERY MUCH!) I met Clayton, a
brand new member coming to his very first event. I asked
him how he learned about the party and he said, “On the
Yahoo list.” Quickly donning my Editor Hat I asked him to
write a few words for me about how he found the list and
website and his first time experiences.
This is what he had to say:
“What a fantastic introduction to the Maverick Porsche
Club! Just think, one month ago I was driving a Camry!
My experience has been very positive, the Maverick Region
was easy to find on the internet and I was able to join the
yahoo groups site immediately ( http://autos.groups.yahoo.
com/group/mrpca/ ). The group site was a huge help in selecting
my car (thanks to Seth Higgens for his pointers) and
the technical help has been awesome (Cliff Blackshear is a
machine).

Catch My Draft

This year we are going to have
quite an assortment of Drivers
Education (DE) opportunities.
Last time I talked about the Time Trial at
MSR, and that isn’t intended to get Time
Trial people to get into DEs. But it would
be an opportunity for the DE people to get
some competitive lap times. This will not
be a substitute for a DE in any way – while there will be
instruction for those new to the track, there will not be
anywhere near the amount of lap time that you get from
our DEs.
We will have DEs this year at both Eagles Canyon
Raceway near Slidell, TX, as well as Motorsport Ranch,
near Cresson, TX. March, May, and November at ECR,
and April, September, and October at MSR. Check the calendar
page for all the details on them. Once you try them, it
is hard to stop!
Our calendar is getting filled up pretty quickly, so take
a look at it fairly often to see what has been added. It takes
a few months for all the schedules to get nailed down, so
changes trickle in for a while.
We plan to have a full year of driving, eating, competing,
and having fun with our Porsches, so come on out and
join the fun! See you soon!

The Bucket List

If you haven’t tried it you really ought to. It’s a
sports car. That’s why you bought it. Our German
friends didn’t build it to be polished, they built it
to be driven. Ok, you can polish it if you must, but bring it
to one of our DEs and learn a lot about the car and perhaps
about yourself.
Our events are safe, challenging and fun. Our instructors
are the best in the business, our organization second to
none. Don’t leave it on your bucket list, get it checked off.
Come to Eagles Canyon in March, let me know it’s your
first time and we will look after you.
For those of you who need advanced instruction to
move to the next level or prepare for a racing career we
have a team of advanced instructors just waiting for your
call. Come try them out.
We need an equipment manager for DEs and the Club
Race. It’s an important job so if you have an interest, and
a truck, please check out the job description and get in
touch.

DE/Club Race Equipment Manager
This person will be responsible for the storage and maintenance
of all DE and Club Race equipment between events,
transportation of all equipment to and from events, setup the
evening before events and tear down at event end, coordinate
distribution, maintenance and recovery of equipment during
the event.
In greater detail –Between Events: Diagnose and fix any
radio or flag issues, assure the radios and all other equipment
is stored properly.
Before Each Event: Put the radios on charge 2 days before
the event, transport equipment to event venue, put up any pylons
and signs required .
During the Event: Attendance is nice but not required, coordinate
getting equipment distributed to workers and corner
stations, attempt diagnosis and repair of equipment problems,
assist with replacement of faulty equipment,.
End of Event: Recover all equipment distributed to workers,
note any equipment needing maintenance prior to next
event, take down any pylons, signs, flag poles, etc. Transport
equipment to appropriate storage.
A single full size pickup with a camper shell over the bed
could probably handle everything. Radio and headset boxes,
flags, flag poles etc. plus coolers and pylons.

Maverick Minutes

James called the meeting to order
at 7:00 PM and we started discussion
with which night was best to
hold our board meetings. We decided that
Wednesday was the best night. We will begin
meeting on Wednesday night with the
March board meeting.
The problems that Denny had with the club calendar
have been fixed. James will try to solve the problem so that
the 2008 to 2009 transition will go more smoothly. Robyn
will send calendar updates to Denny (as well as Jan) in the
future.
Lisa reported that she still has three advertisers who
have not paid for their 2008 Slipstream ads.
Charlie said he had handled a couple of Autocross/
TimeTrial classification questions. He also said that he had
not yet started on his new scoring duties, but intended to
real soon.
Clay passed around an SCCA to PCA class conversion
table for use with the 2008 rules. He reported that the
Texas stadium bus lot rents for $2500 per day, effectively
pricing that venue out of our business. He is still trying
to find a contact person for the Birdville school lots. We
canceled the two schools originally intended to be at La
Grave Field when they bumped the price for the March 30
autocross to $1500 per day. Clay has rescheduled these
events. After a little arm twisting, Clay agreed to assume
the Swap Meet Chair duties.
Bob B(ianconi) announced that the Concours Judging
School planning is progressing well, with considerable interest
and support. He will again schedule two Concour de
Elegance competitions this year. One may again be at May
at Mayo’s on May 17. The other one will be in the Fall.
One possible new venue is the Cooper Aerobics Center.
Robyn presented her Rev 1 version of our calendar.
We used it all evening!
Travis announced that all the time trials are scheduled.
We will again have six time trials, however two of these
will be held on one day… at MSR. All the details of this
event have yet to be worked out.
Tracey stunned us with the announcement that she had
a Social Committee now! Speaking on behalf of her Committee,
she reminded everyone that the New Member Party
on Saturday, January 26 was a “must attend” event for the
board members. She also encouraged everyone to attend
the dinner at Diego’s after the National Board meeting on
February 2. She has scheduled a wine tasting on Saturday,
March 1. The cost will be $20.00 per person and there is
limited room, so RSVP!
Jan invited us to look in the January Slipstream. She
tried to explain why these pictures were too contrasty…
something about Kevin Hardison no longer spending many
hours on each addition to “adjust” them. Without Kevin our
printing expense will go up about $200 per month to “fix”
the pictures. The board approved this expenditure unanimously.
Jan said that the recent advertisement for Slipstream
volunteers was successful… she has 6 to 8 people
on her volunteer list now! One of those volunteers is Tannia
Dobbins, who will create the 2-page layouts for Time
Trials and Autocrosses. That’s the good news. The bad
news is that Tannia will need a copy of InDesign. We approved
that $300 purchase. However, Andy said he might
be able to purchase it for less than that. Jan sent hugs and
kisses his way. They bounced off and the Board also felt
suitably thanked.
Bob L said that the last Happy Hour at Campisi’s was
well attended. He needs information about the 2007 new
members prior to the New Member’s Party. Andy will get
it to him.
Mark quickly reported that all insurance certificates are
ordered. Andy passed…probably exhausted by the tasks
assigned to him.
Joel announced that DE registration opened today,
Tuesday the 8 th . After some discussion, he and Lisa agreed
to again do lunches @ $10 each. Joel announced that he
sold one DE gift certificate in 2007.
Bob B(enson) is confused re safety. He thinks we have
some, but not sure. He would like a central place to store
DE equipment, now that we have two venues. He suggested
that a trailer might be a good solution. The Board wondered
if a trailer would be a target for theft? He also said that Lone
Star, Hill Country, and Maverick are jointly working on a
new DE Handbook. His biggest concern is that not much
related to safety is written down. He is working on that.
Bryan (sounding much like James) said that his sister’s
place, which is North of Plano, was available for the Father’s
Day Picnic.
Clint told the group that he has five Sunday Drives
scheduled. Taking a cue from Tracey, Clint also said he
has a “committee”…and HIS “committee” gets donuts and
shirts! He asked us if it would be OK to schedule a Sunday
Drive during a weekend when a DE is going on? His idea is
to route the “tour” to the DE and let the group observe and
perhaps do the Charity Drive at noon. Joel will talk to his
people and Clint will do likewise…
James adjourned the meeting at 8:27 PM.

A Hope Christmas

As many of you know, the Maverick Region has
as it’s continuing charity the Hope Shelter, an
organization for women & children in need of
safe haven. Located in Mineral Wells, the Shelter receives
contributions of cash, needed items such as toiletries, clothing,
personal care items, furniture & appliances, and other
things that over the years generous Mavericks have provided
when the need arose.
Most recently, the Shelter
last year relocated into their
newly completed facility
which was conceived by
and spearheaded through
design and construction
through the hard work of a
dedicated group of Maverick
members. Last Christmas,
we celebrated the
first Christmas in the new
facility.

This year, as in many years prior, a group of Mavericks
made the trip to Mineral Wells the weekend before Christmas
to help Shelter residents celebrate the holiday, and to
bring Christmas to some children who, without our help,
might have gone without this holiday.
Armed with all the wonderful donations made by all of
you who attended the Maverick Christmas Party and contributed,
and others who couldn’t make the party but made
sure their donations got delivered, the process began with
a stocking stuffing for the younger residents of Hope the
weekend before. Donated items were matched with a list
of residents, and preparations made to deliver the items the
weekend of the Party.
So, on a cold, windy, rainy Saturday; a plucky group

of Porschephiles headed west to play Santa. Included in
the entourage were the Lewis’s, the Fricks, the Shoffits, Bill
Middleton, Ron Colbert, and Jan Mayo.
The residents and staff of the Shelter had waiting for
us a wonderful celebration, and the tables were overflowing
with all sorts of eats for everyone to enjoy. Once the
gifts were brought in and placed under the tree, everyone
began diving into the assembled goodies. With wrapping
paper flying everywhere and boxes, bags, and containers
opening in every corner, the celebration began. Amidst the
happy sounds and squeals of “look what I got!”, the adult
celebrants sampled the eats and socialized, renewing old acquaintances
and making new ones. Lisa Huffaker, director
of Hope, ‘worked the room’ like a pro, from residents to
kids to Maverick members, making sure that everyone was
taken care of.
One of the key events of the Christmas Party is giving
to Hope the funding derived from the Charity Autocross,
and other fundraisings for Hope. This year, we were able to
add nearly $5000 to the Hope coffers due to the wonderful
contributions of so many of YOU, our fellow Mavericks!
As is always the case, it seems that the most important
gifts shared at these settings are those without price – and
yet are free. A warm hug from one of the adult residents –
the gleeful noises of happy kids – that warm glow that stays
with you for days and days and days – giving to someone
else just because it’s the right thing to do.
The Hope Shelter is a year round operation with year
round needs. Many fellow Mavericks have over the years
been a part of this wonderful thing called Hope. If you
would like the opportunity to give a little of your time, talents,
and resources – and in return share in these gifts without
price on a year round basis, come join us.

Mrs. Santa and Her Elves

After years of being very active in Maverick Region
from running the Goodie Store to taking
notes at board meetings to organizing Happy
Hours to shagging cones during AX I have taken a back
seat to the going ons in the club the last few years. I read
in Slipstream that Mrs. Santa (aka Clara Lewis) and all her
elves would be stuffing stockings on December 15th for
the Hope Shelter Christmas Party on December 22 nd . Hey,
that’s down the street from me so I decided to take a peek,
see if I knew any of the elves. Not sure when the stuffing
started because when I arrived Mrs. Santa was feeding her
helpful elves – Wendy Shoffit, Jean and Dave Frick, Bob
Lewis - to a very nice spread of sandwiches and yummy
pastries..good timing on my part, eh…then another elf – Pat
Benson - showed up. After the break it was back to stuffing
stockings and I must tell you Clara must have had it so
organized because I left and came back 45 minutes later and
all the elves were gone!
Just a side note: All the items that you Mavericks have
donated over the year have made this Stocking Stuffing possible
for the Hope Shelter kids, moms and employees…
A Big Thank You!

A Follow up Story

A follow up story from last year’s Christmas
Party at The Huffaker-Hughes Hope House.
Do you recall the story in Slipstream from last
year’s Christmas Party. This was the first party
in the new shelter and the time when Lanean’s
playroom was first used by the
children. There was a story

how it came to be and how a
precious little girl was riding it.
Well fast forward one year
and the same precious little girl
and her family are back for our
party again. But this time they
have changed. Last year they
were very reserved in their
presence. But this time the little
girl was moving through out the
party all smiles and talking with
the other children. Her brother moved around too and even
went outside by himself to swing on the jungle gym. They
were very well behaved and were enjoying the festivities.
Last year their mother stayed out of the mainstream of
conversation. But this year she was smiling and talked with
those around her. I talked with the
mother and she told me how well
the children were doing in school.
I told her how well I thought the
children were progressing and I
thought that she was doing a great
job with them.
Well guess what? When they
got ready to leave, the mother came

over and gave me a hug. Boy was I speechless. This is a
shy reserved young woman and I’m almost a stranger (but
not really). How far this family had come in one year! They
were well, happy and emotionally much improved. I can’t
tell you how wonderful I felt knowing that our efforts had
had such a mighty impact on this family. This is a sign that
our Maverick Region is truly helping families in need of a
new start. Good job Mavericks!!

Mavericks Celebrate the Holidays

Maverick annual Holiday Parties are held in
homes - thank you very much - not restaurants
or bars or office buildings. Unlike
other regions, each year Mavericks come (to a) home for
the holiday (party) – a scrumptiously decorated, warm
and welcoming Maverick family HOME - thank you very
much. There we are hugged and fed, shown treasures and
cheered, and introduced to the new family members.

eight gorgeous Porsches engaged the starter.

street, up the
hill Clint led,
to see the
twinklings of
green and red.
The drivers
eyes twinkled,
the girls
cheeks were
red. Each top was folded with a wink of the eye, then with
a twist of the head, they all saw the lights of Dallas …before
bed!

“Trivia Light” and More Prizes

Hey there Porsche Fans!!!! A few months ago I
was asked if I would like to take over the Trivia
for Slipstream. I have thoroughly enjoyed doing
the research (hey, you don't really think that I knew ALL
of this Trivia 'stuph' did you?) that has allowed some of the
Q&A. In fact, I have been told that the Questions are great,
but the 'wrong answers' are even better!!!
The above title, "TRIVIA LIGHT & MORE PRIZES"
tells you what you will find in the Trivia Section of Slipstream
and the Website. We have noticed that not too many
of our great Maverick Region Members are entering the
Trivia each month and we have been searching for an answer.
So here is what we are going to do. We will have
TWO (2) Trivia Contests as long as we have space; one for
the experienced Porsche Fan with lots of knowledge; and
one for the less experienced Porsche Fan which we will call
"Trivia Light." The only real rule for playing "Trivia Light"
is that you have not won the Trivia Contest in the last five
years, AND you have not gotten more than two answers
correct in the last six months in regular "Trivia". Once you
win "Trivia Light" you will automatically be moved into
the regular "Trivia Contest". In case of a tie, we will have a
drawing to determine the winner.
This is will give our newer Members, and those with
just a cursory knowledge of the Porsche brand, a chance
to play and win also. Take a look at this month's "Trivia
Light" and see just how many you know, or can find since
you have a whole month. When you enter be sure to mark
the Subject either "TRIVIA" or "TRIVIA LIGHT" so that
we know for which one you are supplying the answers!!!
I am the ONLY person that sees your answers and NO
ONE will tease you even if you get them all wrong. So give
it a try, you have nothing to loose, and possibly something
to gain, GIFT CERTIFICATES for parts or service from our

Happy Hour at Campisi’s

You never know what the attendance will be at
the December Happy Hours. You see it is very
close to Christmas and all those activities. This
year it was ever so close being on the 20 th of December.
Furthermore it was held about as far from the center of our
region as we go for Happy Hours. It was at Campisi’s at the
North Dallas North Parkway just before state highway 121.
This Campisi’s is run by the grandson of the owner of the
original Campisi’s on Mockingbird Lane in Dallas.

The happy news comes from Bonnie and Marc Thaler.
They are expecting a baby in May. It seems they had given
all of the baby things and maternity clothes to the Hope
House before the magic event happened. We will be wishing
them success during the wait for the baby. Way to go Bonnie
and Marc.

Hour is going to Cantina
Laredo at Inwood and
Lovers Lane. We have
been there a couple of
times before. The food
and drinks are great. And
the parking is easy. See
you there.
Who is happier, Marc or Bonnie?
The fare was as expected very tasty and moderately
priced. The atmosphere was casual and the parking easy and
plentiful. This makes for a great combination. The turnout
was just in keeping with this spot. We had quite a few new
members to the Maverick Region and some longer time
ones who had not attended many of our events.
As usual in talking with new people you are surprised
at the common interests of other people you both know. We
met a partner of an Oncologist
that we know
from Irving, Robert
Weisberg. Robert has
had Porsches for years
but is just now looking
up the Mavericks. Then
there was a couple that
runs DE’s and some
club races. This was
their first social event with us. That is if you don’t count the
Yahoo group chat facility where he participates often. There
were two couples from
Denton County that came
into town for our Happy
Hour. This location was
not far from their homes
and it was convenient for
them to drive there. Welcome
