Mik e Brodig an, Pr eside nt
As I write this, Porsche Parade
has just ended. As always, we
had a bunch of trophy winners.
Slipstream received 2nd in class for the
largest regions, and our members had a
great showing in several areas, including
cars going fast, and cars looking beautiful.
Look for more stories in this issue...
The cars looking beautiful (Concours d’Elegance) is the
competition that gets me. Now don’t get me wrong, I like a
clean car as much as the next guy, but these guys go crazy.
One time I asked Ed Mayo how long it took to prep a car. I
thought maybe a day or two. Wrong! Some guys take several
months to prepare their cars. I think the real fanatics wrap
them in cellophane and place them in an airtight containers.
At last year’s Parade, I watched the judges do their thing. I
think they are darn near as crazy as the contestants. They
can find nooks and crannies that even Porsche AG doesn’t
know exist. Anyway, those are some CLEAN cars.
I hear a lot of members discussing what their favorite
model Porsche is. Lets take a poll. What is your favorite
model Porsche? Mine is a 1987 Porsche 911. Zap me an
e-mail at president@mavpca.org and let me know yours. I
will report the results next month.
This is Mike’s “get your money’s worth” advice. There are
a lot of folks out there who have not yet taken an opportunity
to take part in our events. We are one of the most active
PCA regions in the country. Take a minute to look at our
calendar of events and pick one. Our event chairs go to great
lengths to provide our members with fun, well-run events.
So whether you like driving,
showing your car, or having fun
at a social, we have something for
you. Come join in.
Every year about this time
the region starts the process of
election of officers. The first
step is to appoint a nomination
committee. This year James
Shoffit is the chairman. If you are
interested in running for an office
or know someone you think
would be interested, let James
know at james@shoffit.com.
Mav of the Month
This month’s Mav of the month
is a couple. Charlie and Teri
Davis have been active Mavs for
years. Charlie is everywhere taking pictures. He also takes
care of the “Truckster” (our autocross storage and timing
truck), and is an active part of our autocross team. Teri
ran our rally program, and is very involved with PCA on
the national level. The Davises are at most of our monthly
meetings, giving us their valuable insights.
For being the Mavericks of the Month, The Silver Fox in
Grapevine is giving Charlie & Teri dinner for two at their
award winning steak house.
Charlie & Teri, thanks for all you do.
A Brief Look Back at the “Backyard Project”
By Linda Bambina
It was the end of October, 2009 when
Prez Mike approached me about being
the “project manager” for a big plan
that he and Clara Lewis had come up with:
a major renovation for the backyard at the
Huffaker-Hughes Hope House, Maverick
Region’s chosen charity for close to two
decades.
Some of you might have seen the “From the Regions”
article in Panorama with an excellent picture of Mike
and Joel Nannis
(thanks, Charlie!)
assembling a
section of the
playground
equipment that
took more than 10
hours to complete.
They ran the
picture, but not the
caption: “Check
out the fine effort
from President
Mike Brodigan
and long-time
Membership
Chair, Joel Nannis
as they assemble
one of the 2,000
parts on this playset with the infamous Star Wrench!”
And like so many aspects of big projects, there are 857
stories behind the scenes….. just ask James or Wendy
Shoffit about that wrench!
Getting the playground equipment delivered, unloaded
and installed was just one piece of the Big Picture. There
was also drainage issues, sprinkler system re-routes,
flagstone fitting, cement patio design and implementation
as well as landscaping design, prep and planting, plus the
infamous Kiddie Cushion requirements. To quote myself in
the Pano article: “While Mavericks have donated clothing,
appliances, furniture, toys and more for more than a decade
now, this project would require cash and physical labor to
bring it up to our Porsche Excellence is Expected standards!”
Yep! The project was scaled back to “just” $14,361. Once
again, there are MANY stories behind the fund-raising for
this much money in the short amount of time I had to get it
done. With Parade in early July, I knew that the middle of
June was my absolute deadline to be finished.
Somehow it happened. Special thanks to Wendy, Jan
Mayo, Lisa Steele and Christy Payne for their hard work. Bit
by bit, piece by piece, 31 Mavericks came through. That’s
right. 31 people stepped up and made it all possible. Eight
couples even gave $1,000 each, joining the Millennium
Club that Mike created. (Those generous folks will be
getting their names on the bricks outside the Hope House,
joining the few who were the builders and the shakers for
building the Hope House 3 ½ years ago.)
Another miracle happened. An “old Maverick,”
landscape artist
Eric Devonport,
proposed driving
out to Mineral
Wells and
spending two
12 hour days
with one of his
landscape design
workers and
stone fitters to
get the rest of
the job DONE.
And we did. Lisa
Huffaker stepped
up, put in at least
10 hours a day on
this project, got
her husband to
do the cement work, took down part of the fence to increase
access, invited Eric and his worker to stay at her home,
saving money for the project in that way, even fed us as part
of her contribution! May 18th … Mission Impossible…
was completed.
About a month later, Prez Mike and wife, Judy, had a
wonderful celebration for everyone who contributed their
time, energy or money to the successful outcome of this
amazing event. Once again, Charlie took some fantastic
pictures at the party. He also took the most beautiful sunset
view of the entire backyard with a fabulous wide angle
lens. They even presented an engraved rock to add to the
Hope House’s backyard ambiance in honor of Clara Lewis
and me. It says, “The foundation for HOPE is built one rock
at a time.”
Jan Mayo encouraged me to come up with an alliteration
to explain my passion for this Hope House Transformation:
From Down and Dirty ~ To Positively Pleasant
Hugs to all of you who helped. You all ROCK, too!
We should all be proud of this...
Richard Bradley, Managing Editor
The Boxster is back and I’m finally
in the driver’s seat. Man have I
missed this car. Thank you to Hans
and Bob, as well as everyone at RAC
Performance that helped make it better
than it was when I purchased it. As far as
I’m concerned, RAC is fabulous!
As you look through this month’s issue,
I hope you notice a few of the many changes I have started
making. Every year at our National Parade, there is a national
competition where Regions around the country go head to
head, or should I say, cover to cover in a newsletter contest.
Last year, Jan Mayo was awarded 2nd Place in our class of
800 members or more. This year, I was able to do the same
with another 2nd. We are so close... Slipstream was as close
as 16 points from winning First in Class and 25 points away
from wining the best of the best and bringing the Heinmiller
Award to Texas. I want to ask for your help in elevating
your newsletter to a new level. Slipstream is for Mavericks
and is about Mavericks, so please help us reach the pinnacle
next year in Savannah. Please contribute in whatever way
you can. I’m open to any and all suggestions and help.
Hope to hear from you soon, Enjoy
First, let me say that I’m not a big gambler. I tend to
lose all the money I “play” with and decided a long
time ago to just see the shows in Las Vegas and shop!
However, we were all big winners at the Porsches & Ponies
event at Lone Star Park!
I know what you’re thinking...wasn’t it too HOT?
Nope.
The East Trackside area was wonderful! It was so cool
that some of us had to step outside once in a while to warm
up! What a great way to see the races! We were very close
to the track, and the finish line! It was fun just trying to
figure out all that information about the horses and jockeys.
Ultimately, it was just dumb luck, I think!
Some of the horses we bet on were Ready to Smokem, Wee
Be Gone, Aggie Friend, Tropical Doll, Tellittomestraight,
Salty Chick, Stormin Missile ...I just love all the silly names!
The lunch buffet was delicious too! Brisket and BBQ
chicken and salads so good, they were discussed around the
tables. The potato salad had bacon in it, and we all know
that everything’s better with bacon! What a great day with
friends, fun and laughter!
Okay, so now I guess I have to fess up. I actually ended
up ahead by the end of the day...by fifty dollars!! Denny
gets some of the credit, since we teamed up to make our
picks. I guess I’m not such a loser after all!
Thanks to all who attended! It wouldn’t have been as
much fun without you!
big winnings!
Porsche Parade….Take Two
By Frank Briggs
It was about a year ago when four couples returning
from a wonderful week in Keystone, Colorado agreed
to collectively converge on St. Charles, Ill. For the 55th
Porsche Parade
the following year.
Bobbie and I had
never been to St.
Louis, MO so we
decided it had to be
a stop on the way for
our four-car caravan. Our group consisted of John and Chris
Hamilton, driving their beautiful, almost new C4S with
only 10,000 miles followed by Doug and Cheryl Koeppen
in their Arena Red 1996 993. Covering the back door were
George and Dee Luxbacher in their beautiful 2006 Carrera
S Cab while Bobbie and I had the pleasure of leading the
group in our 1995 993 Coupe.
Our departure date was June 30, from Sanger, Texas.
We were to meet slightly before 11 AM and leave shortly
thereafter. At about 10:55 my phone rang and it was Dee
stating that they were on their way to meet us, but it was the
first long trip they had taken in their 2006 Cab and finding a
place for everything presented a challenge. Word has it that
UPS was involved in their return trip.
One of our original four couples, (Chris and Ann
Christensen) was not able to make the trip as originally
planned, however, they surprised us by seeing us off at our
departure point. Getting a chance to visit with them made
the morning even more special.
After a group photo we were on our way. After several
missed turns trying to find a lunch stop (remember, I was
leading) we grabbed a bite to eat and were back on the
road for our first night in Tulsa. I know that sounds like a
short drive, but four or five hours surrounded by most of
the clothes from one’s closet are about as long as one can
tolerate.
Thursday morning we were finally off to St. Louis. Our
Tulsa hotel was in the middle of a construction zone so
our group finally made it to I-44 after wandering around
a residential neighborhood for a few minutes looking for
the freeway (remember, I was still leading). It wasn’t long
before Tulsa was in the rear view mirror (along with three
of the most beautiful cars in the world) as we made our way
to the Will Rogers Turnpike. Turnpike is another word for
pay as you go. As we approached St. Louis I convinced John
and Chris to take the lead as I was the only car without a
GPS. There we were, cruising into St. Louis when over the
horizon the famous Arch came into view. What a great photo
opportunity with the back of John’s C4S framed by the St.
Louis Arch. After checking into our hotel and unloading
our cars we decided it was time to relax and enjoy a dinner.
Three couples strolled to Copia Wine Bistro for a terrific
dinner while John and Chris took in the baseball game at the
beautiful ball field
downtown.
Friday morning
was time spent
riding to the top
of the Arch and
general sightseeing
before heading off to St. Charles for the 55th Porsche
Parade. The afternoon consisted of driving through some
beautiful farmland filled with cornfields. At about 6:30 PM
four Porches filled with very tired drivers, passengers and
lots of gear pulled into Pheasant Run for hotel check in.
Saturday was Parade Check-In with all the excitement of
things planned. If you have ever attended Parade, you know
that Check-In is an event in itself. Saturday evening found
us enjoying food catered by several famous Chicago eateries
in an airport close to the headquarters. We were surrounded
by a combination of fantastic vintage flying machines as
well as extremely rare Porsches.
Sunday was Concours day with a display that is only seen
once a year. The number of 356’s as well as other models
was incredible. Each car was a work of art. The golf course
was a perfect setting with trees for much needed shade.
The remainder of the week was filled with well-prepared
banquets and well organized driving tours. I have never seen
so many cornfields as we passed on the drives. The state
parks were fun to visit and the wonderful catered meals kept
our strength up for more driving.
With the resort being west of Chicago about an hour, the
committee organized bus tours to the city that included a
Chicago River cruise as well as a tour of Oak Park, famous
for homes designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
I can’t write this article without congratulating Wendy on
her winning the Top Lady Driver time in the Autocross. I
would also be remiss if I didn’t thank Jan, James and Wendy
for all of their work in making this another successful
Parade. It was also great to see so many Mavericks make the
trip. There were lots of Texas License Plates in the parking
lot.
After a week of everything Porsche and Chicago, two of
our number took separate routes home visiting sites and
friends while the Hamilton’s and Briggs’ returned by way of
St. Louis and Tulsa.
A wonderful time was had by all and as soon as our cars
(and us) have had a chance to recover from our 1000 mile
one way trips, we will discuss our next adventure.
Now, how far is Savannah?
Parade 2010
By Wendy Shoffit
St. Charles? Where’s that? An hour west of Chicago?
Well, that has some interesting possibilities! That’s
what we thought two years ago when the location
was announced during the Charlotte Parade. It turns out
it’s a lovely town near the Fox River and loaded with other
amenities that were NOT as available in Keystone, CO last
year. Maybe you’ll remember our near disaster from last year
with the broken shock and not much auto parts/hardware
shopping nearby (if you don’t, check out page 12 of the
Sept. ‘09 issue of Slipstream)? This year we made certain to
locate all “necessary” shops before Parade began... just in
case. Luckily, everything ran very smoothly.
Parade this year returned to a seven-day format, to the
delight of the majority of Parade attendees. The past
few years they’ve tried compressing it to as little as five
days without losing anything. Talk about BUSY! Events
overlapped and by the end of the week we were exhausted.
This year both James and I got an afternoon nap and we
even caught National Awards Chair, Jan Mayo, sunning
herself on her outdoor patio. Relaxing. *smile*
We were blessed this year to be able to have the Concours
on the golf course at the host hotel, the Pheasant Run Resort.
It was nice being able to walk to see the cars, take a break
in the room, and later walk back to see what we missed.
The setting was spectacular and three brave Maverick
members cleaned their cars with q-tips and toothbrushes to
enter in the Concours d’Elegance. Not only did they enter,
but they did very well. Tom and Barb Minnella took 2nd
place in their class, Charles and Pam Armstrong took 1st
place in their class, and Ed Mayo took 1st place in his class!
Congratulations! Quite a feat for Mavs to have such a great
showing.
The TSD Rally this year was...ummm... how shall I put
this delicately? Challenging, tricky, devilish? At a usual
Parade Rally the trophy winning scores might end up in the
hundreds, but this year they were in the thousands. By the
end people were hot, tired, frustrated, and ready for a sweet
treat at the ice cream social! Somehow that always seems
to cheer people up. Once again, a few brave Mavericks
Photos by Linda Bambina & Wendy Shoffit
stepped up to the challenge. Dave and Jean Frick performed
spectacularly in the Unequipped Plus category, taking 4th
place. Carey Spreen partnered once again with Gerry Brown
(from Golden Gate Region in California) and this time took
6th place in Unequipped. Way to keep your cool and bring
home some hardware! Awesome job.
The Gimmick Rally had many takers this year, giving
people an opportunity to see the sites with a longer time
frame and more chance to relax. It also allows more people
in the car (even if it’s a rental), hopefully to see more of the
clues and answer the questions better. Taking home the very
top honor was the team of Jerry, Myra, and Aubrey Sutton
and Jess Holzer (Aubrey’s long time Parade friend since
they were kids). Fabulous!
The Parade autocross is an area that we Mavericks like to
shine. We don’t have many Concours events or Rallies on
our local calendar. Not that we haven’t tried... it just seems
like most of the entrants who sign up would rather go as
fast as possible, whether it’s on a race track or a parking
lot filled with orange pylons. It’s hard to understand, but it
seems inevitable. This year a few of us figured we’d give
it a go at the course. It was a good design, utilizing some
of the interesting surface issues on the parking lot. Water
drains provided some on- and off-camber opportunities,
often lifting a wheel during cornering and definitely making
it a bit of a bumpy ride. Bringing home more well deserved
trophies were Fran Ussery, winning 2nd in her class
(Showroom Stock Boxsters), James Shoffit getting 2nd in
his class (I04 - progressed cars), and my getting 1st in my
class. I was also blessed to be able to finish with the Ladies
Top Time of Day again this year, despite being 1.3 seconds
slower than James and 5.2 seconds slower than Men’s TTOD
winner, Leeds Gulick. Keep your fingers crossed that the
other women drivers leave their zoomie race cars at home
next year. I’ll gladly take a three-peat!
Parade competition isn’t always about doing things with
your cars. The Tech Quiz tests competitors’ knowledge
about technical and historical aspects of Porsches. It
is certainly not for the faint of heart. I’ve taken it in the
10

past and much of the time walked out of there feeling like
an idiot. However... at times I’ve still managed to score a
trophy. This year I opted out, but several Mavericks opted
in. Unfortunately, their scores were just out of trophy range.
They remain undeterred, though, so look out Savannah
2011! We WILL be back.
Several national awards are also presented during Parade.
Enthusiast (individual and family), Region of the Year,
Public Service, Website, Newsletter, and many
more trophies are handed out. Our very own
Richard Bradley won a 2nd place trophy in
Class V (the largest class) for Slipstream!
Talk about some HARD work put in. So well
deserved!
There were other competitive events,
including a golf tournament, RC cars, RC
boats, art show, and 5K run/walk. If you
wanted to compete OUTSIDE of your car,
there were lots of opportunities. The toughest
part is scheduling it all.
While I’ve spent a lot of time talking about
competition at Parade, that’s not all that it’s
about. Driving tours have really come alive in
recent years. From drives on Route 66 to a track
experience on Road America, you could take
your car to fabulous (albeit far away) places.
For those wanting to leave their cars behind,
they had bus tours taking people to Frank Lloyd
Wright sites,
Ed & Alan
architectural
working for Ed’s
river boat
1st place winner!
tours, and
tours of
downtown
Chicago.
There was
something for
everyone.
Kids this
year were treated to tons of activities, many centering
around the indoor/outdoor pool at the resort. Add to that the
Ben & Jerry’s ice cream parlor in the hotel and you have a
winner! There were activities for young kids, as well as a
complete schedule for teens. If they wanted to participate,
there was always something going on. Jasmine, our 13 year
old, had a blast (despite being a teenager)! She finds friends
wherever she goes.
Banquets! How could I forget about the banquets? Each
year they get better and better. This year kicked off with
a welcome banquet in an airplane hangar. We joined with
a fundraiser for a local children’s hospital and had a ball.
Typical Chicago food was provided (deep dish pizza, hot
dogs, Italian beef sandwiches, frozen cheesecake, etc.) and
we gobbled it up. We were treated not only to fabulous cars
and planes on display, a Cayenne Turbo raffle, “The Blues
Wendy Shoffit, our top lady
drive for year two !
Brothers” in concert, but also an air show outside during
dinner. What more could you ask for? I can’t imagine.
Three of the last four banquets were held in the “Mega
Center” at the hotel. That was certainly no misnomer. It
was enormous! Having that much space allowed for the
Concours banquet to have the division and overall winning
cars ON DISPLAY. Not to be out done, the autocross
banquet also allowed the winning cars (Showroom Stock,
Production, Improved, and
Modified) to be displayed
(mine included, front and
center). I’ve never seen that
done before (this was my
10th Parade) and was thrilled
with both displays. There’s
something special and very
tactile about being able to
get that close to amazing and
beautiful vehicles.
Fran, Linda, Jan & Alan
after checking in
The Rally banquet was taken off-site to the Morton
Arboretum, complete with a live hedge maze and some
amazing floral displays. Mother Nature, however, must
not have wanted us to be outside that night, as she sent us
pouring rains. Fortunately the organizers planned ahead and
had enormous tents to be under. The real trick was keeping
your food plate from drowning going from tent to tent. This
will be one of the few banquets I’ll never forget!
The victory banquet was the final one held in the “Mega
Center.” While no Maverick member won the trip to
Germany, I keep holding out hope.
One of the most special parts of Parade for those who
attend year after year is the opportunity to visit with friends
from around the country. While it’s great keeping up with
them on Facebook throughout the year, it’s so much better to
be able to hug them in person. I’m always amazed at how
each year we meet someone brand new and seem to bump
into them throughout the week, building a friendship that
only takes minutes at a time, but lasts for years to come. The
slogan rings true year after year after year... “It’s not just the
cars, it’s the people.” There were 34 Mavs who attended this
year. I hope even more will attend next year in Savannah,
Georgia from July 31st - August 6th, 2011. See you there!
I’ve bought a lot of cars over the years, but this is the best experience by far – so
much so that I drive out of my way to come to Park Place Porsche. It all started
with the sales person, and now I’m on a first-name basis with Jason, from parts,
and Kevin, my service advisor. Both check in on me all the time, making it feel
like a family experience.
They’re as excited as you are when you get your car. This is my third Porsche
and my baby. The 997 Turbo is a tremendous car, but I wanted to find some way
to make it unique. I started with the wheels. That made a great look for the car
and changed its entire personality. That’s when I first met Jason. We spent a lot
of time talking about the engine and potential modifications for it; three weeks
later, I was back for the performance upgrades we had discussed.
My favorite engine upgrade was also the first one we did: the exhaust. The flow
is a lot cleaner, a lot faster, and it sounds great without taking away from the
Porsche engine sound. We also changed the headers and added four other upgrades
that improved the performance, bringing it from 480 hp to well over 600 hp.
I wanted top-quality, so we used genuine Porsche parts for everything. It
alleviates any concern, because the warranty is the same as all Porsche parts on
the car. And when it is in for service, Kevin always takes great care of me —
making a fun car even more fun to own.
These guys invested time and effort with me, so I want to reciprocate and give
them all the business I can. The people really make all the difference and are
why I recommend Park Place Porsche.
Cliff’s Ramblings
by Cliff Blackshear
Driving home today, I was thinking
about all that had transpired in the
shop over the last 12 hours. The
one thought that kept standing out was how
overwhelmed we are with new technology.
Software and computer driven systems
were the hot topic today. As technicians,
the effort to keep up with new offerings
is becoming more than just a challenge that
requires reading the latest technical info. It
seems that Porsche has given us advances
in technology in the last one and one half to
two years that is huge in new applications.
The latest ideas come off an
engineer’s drawing board, then are executed
into production and we are barely given the
heads up before the cars are on a ship and on
their way over the pond. Usually, training has
begun, but we have often only had our hands
on a prototype. Not to frighten anyone, but
that has been my experience since the early
70’s as a Porsche technician.
So much has to be learned with new
offerings. We have seen: DFI introduction,
“generation 2” flat 6 water filled engines,
dual clutch sequential shift transmissions and huge advances
in on board electrical systems; all in a very short time
frame. Plus just keeping up with the latest improvements
on systems we are familiar with. Brakes, suspension, air
management, climate control, navigation, alarm system,
lighting, passive and active safety items to name a few
things that are always changing. With every change comes a
new approach to diagnosis and repair applications.
I thought to myself tonight, “this truly is more
change in a short period of time than I’ve ever witnessed.”
It is interesting and I know that the newest ideas are always
so cutting edge. We are switching from PIWIS (Porsche
Integrated Workshop Information System) to PIWIS 2 and
the change is huge. The latest system tester is a “Toughbook”
laptop and the entire way of interrogating on board systems
has changed. Coding, programming, fault analysis, analysis
logs, factory hand over to civilian use, has all changed.
Current analysis logs run between 400 to 500 pages of data,
it can be overwhelming, I love it! As an old timer, this is
what keeps me thinking and trying to maintain an edge for
understanding new technology.
I have learned to spend as much time in the cars
driving them for one reason or another and observing
what works correctly and how it behaves. It is so helpful
to truly know what is normal; “operating as designed”
engine, gearbox, brakes, PCM (Porsche Communication
PIWIS 2(Porsche Integrated
Workshop Information System)
Technology Moves On
Management) etc. behavior. The cars have a personality
that has to be understood. An engineering direction that can
make them sometimes seem odd unless you understand the
goal of “system performance” is important to experience.
I ramble.............
Porsche has some pretty awesome technical people
over here to help us with any new model. Most often these
days we need these guys to lead us through the electrical
system diagnostic sequences. CAN (Controller Area
Network) is so different from the past. Two
wires that allow data from multiple control
units to communicate with each other at the
same time has been the norm for many years.
Yet these systems become more complex
every year. The front control unit drives
everything from windshield forward; the
rear control unit handles everything in the
rear. Lighting, hood opening servos, alarm
system components, spoiler activation, etc.
and that’s the low speed network. High
speed “CAN” handles fuel and ignition,
traction management, active suspension,
transmission commands, ABS, etc.
There are times when I look at all
the software on board and just get
overwhelmed. It is like a cartoon to me. A microprocessor
reports, “That microprocessor is handling this or that.” That
microprocessor says “No I only handle some of it,” then they
stop talking to one another, or start talking to the driver. “So
and so is being bad and not listening to me” (a warning light
comes on.) We then go in as overlords and tell them what
they are going to do and to stop bothering the owner with
their petty problems, such as (one doesn’t like the signal
the other sends.) Implausible signal, below limit value,
above limit value, no communication, short to ground, short
to B+, open circuit, incorrect coding, etc. etc. It is truly
comical the stupid things computer driven information can
generate. And all the while the car is behaving fine except
for the instrument cluster warning display. Fortunately these
problems are rare. “I forgot” is another favorite of mine.
Suddenly a car no longer has navigation or heated seats. We
just reintroduce all the systems to each other and then they
get along again.
I’m so old school I cannot look at these problems from a
computer background. I understand them, yet it seems so
weird. There are times when I wish I was dealing with
distributor points and spark plug heat range issues, or
carburetors that need synchronizing. Maybe an adjustment
to the float levels or even acceleration enrichments that are
a bit off.… HAHAHA! Give me a 356 with tired
synchros..... Running out of RAM! Cliff
“I found my thrill….on Blueberry Hill”
By Clint C. Blackman III
June 13th, the Maverick Sunday
Drive crew took off in search of the
blueberry hills of East Texas. Forty
“blueberry craving” Porsche fans took
off from
Mesquite,
Texas in
search of the
sweetest Cyanococcus. East
Texas has become famous
for the sweetest blueberries
because of the high acid content
of the sandy soil and the Texas
sun.
Boardwalk Porsche loaned a
new Panamera 4S to serve as
our lead car. Everyone enjoyed
trying out the driver’s seats…front and back! The car is
“all Porsche” with great design lines and handling. The
Panamera is a terrific addition for touring Porsche fans
who want true sports car travel with four adults. Everyone
enjoyed watching the Panamera take to the road in true
Porsche style.
After leaving the metroplex, our smiling “health foodies”
arrived in Edom, Texas after great stretches of interstate
highway followed by scenic “farm to market” roads. FM
roads are fun to drive because they follow farm property
lines. After years of
farm truck and tractor
travel, the roads are 90
degree banked turns of
pure driving pleasure.
Edom is an artist
colony of potters,
painters, and sculptures
that enjoy farm life.
The town also has some
of the finest East Texas
comfort food. We got
everyone’s attention
Pick one... eat one... pick one...
as the Porsche parade
stopped at the Shed
Café and the Edom Bakery. Cold, sweet iced tea never
tasted so good. After the “pit stop” and a short drive we
arrived at Echo Springs.
The Echo Springs farm is the second largest blueberry
farm in Texas. They cultivate 60 acres of the finest grade of
“high bush” blueberry plants. After a brief discussion of the
finer points of blueberry picking, Mavericks took to the
20
Photos by Clint C. Blackman III
fields. Porsche people proved they could pick & pluck with
the best pickers! It was easy…you pick one and eat one…
and pick one and eat one! After work in the fields we
enjoyed, a tour of the harvesting machines and the production
Come join us on our next Sunday Drive.
plant was held. In the country store everyone stocked up on
more blueberries, blueberry ice cream, blueberry pie and
everything else made with blueberries. We found our thrill
in the blueberry hills of East Texas. Join us on our next
thrilling adventure as we find new and fun Porsche places to
drive.

Member Spotlight: Josh Noble
by Andrea Bell
This month, our new member
spotlight is on Josh Noble. Josh
purchased a black 2006 Cayman
S in 2009. His first car was a 1995, red,
BMW M3. While completely impractical
for a 16 year old, that little red sports car
made the weekends the best. He said that it
may have been the cause of some troubles,
but he has no regrets now. Then came college; and although
the lack of practical space was without restriction,
if not an advantage to a teen, the opposite was true
for a co-ed. His freshman year, he sold the BMW
and purchased a 2002 Acura TL Type S.
This past fall he was finally in a position to
go back to the impractical, yet overly satisfying
driving experience he had been missing for years.
After initial investigation of the market he was
looking into a BMW 3.35i, secondary to the great
experiences with his first car. With pre-owned
manual 3.35s in very limited supply, and new ones
being a bit overpriced, he was in no rush to jump
into a purchase. Then by chance, he happened to
visit the Park Place Mercedes dealership across the
street from his home on recommendation to see
their trade-ins. He said, “I wish I had a photo of
the salesman’s face when I told him I had no interest in a
Mercedes.” He walked around the back lot, and sandwiched
between an Aston Martin with awful orange interior, and
a Mustang of the worst generation, he found his Cayman.
According to Josh, it was in pristine condition, and with
only 6K miles, it was apparent that it had been someone’s
second love for the past few years. Josh mentioned an
interest, but assumed that a car of that quality would be out
of his price range.
He left the dealer without thoughts of any quality
prospects, but a call 1 hour later with a quote changed his
position. He said he had no doubt that his girlfriend was
hiding overwhelming thoughts of scorn when he told her
they needed to drop what they were doing so he could
test drive a Porsche. He added, “I have no doubt she was
calculating how I would be making up for my testosterone
driven foolishness later.” After 10 minutes in the car he was
ready to sign, and said he would have done it on the side
of the road even. Josh said, “Critics be damned, the kick
of that throttle sparking the roar of the 3.4L mid-engine
mounted inches from my head cannot be ignored. This is
what driving is supposed to feel like.”
Josh is single at the moment. Then he said, “Correction, I
am currently “not married” as my girlfriend would not find
the term “single” to best describe my relationship status.”
His girlfriend, Andrea Gimple is finishing up her degree
from TCU in special education. Josh then explained further,
“Don’t worry, I just graduated in 2008 so the Porsche and
college girlfriend is not a mid-life crisis sign.” He also has
a two year-old, 120 lb. Rhodesian Ridgeback. Fortunately
Andrea drives an X5 to help tote him around.
Josh grew up in Colleyville with a brief time near the end
of high school in Alexandria, VA. He came back down to
Fort Worth to attend TCU. He received his undergraduate
degree there and will be returning this fall for a professional
MBA.
His friends would say
that work is his hobby, but
swears he is more fun than
that. He loves to do just
about anything that allows
him to interact with others.
Although not very good yet,
he recently picked up golf
and has been trying to get
out as much as possible. Josh
also enjoys cooking with his
friends. He confessed, “I am
not very good at coming up
with innovative concoctions
from scratch, but I am
darn good at reading a cookbook. Cooking together is a
phenomenal way to bring friends together because everyone
likes to eat and the food is that much better when you made
it.”
He also enjoys going to the gun range with friends. He
shared, “Whether you are shooting clays or handguns, there
is something oxymoronic in the exhilarating yet relieving
feeling of firing off a few rounds.” Josh enjoys traveling,
so much in fact, that this summer he will be finishing off
visiting every state including Alaska. When traveling to
someplace tropical, he also enjoys scuba diving. Josh also
greatly enjoys learning about art. He is a member of the
Kimbell Art Museum’s Cosmopolitans, which host special
events for young professionals interested in art. If he could
list his oddest interest, it would have to be that he is a hot
sauce fanatic. He always has a random bottle on the table
and just about everything imaginable in the cupboard.
Josh stays involved as an Alumni Advisor for his college
fraternity. He said, “The Greek system gave me the
opportunity to build my skills in financial management,
people management, interpersonal relationships, and
philanthropy. I work with the active fraternity executive
board to provide a fresh perspective on their projects and
plans.”
We are proud to welcome our new member Josh to the
Maverick family.
Happy Hour at Wildwood Grill
by Chris Christensen
Formerly known as the Southlake
Tavern, the Wildwood Grill is
now owned and operated by Dave
Garner. As those of you know who were
there, we are sure you will attest to the
fact that Dave pays
attention to the
details. He was
seen on numerous occasions in the
parking lot making sure all of the
Porsches were correctly parked
in reserved spaces he designated.
We think Dave had as much fun
overseeing the parking of the
Porsches as examining them as they
arrived. But then who wouldn’t,
there were as usual, a great array
of cars of many vintages including
a beautiful 1990 944 cab. But it is
hard to drop anchor on any one of the cars…that is why we
own Porsches, they are all beautiful.
About 30 Mavericks made the trip to Southlake to
enjoy the food and Porsche inspired camaraderie. We all
enjoyed very tasty hors
d’oeuvres that seemed to
keep on coming. The new
restaurant was completely
remodeled by Dave Garner
after he purchased it. It
is not recognizable from
the old Southlake Tavern.
Although tucked into
the town of Southlake
and maybe a little hard
Cheryl Koeppen & Chris Hamilton
Cheers...
to find, it represents a
moderately priced menu of
a blend of Southwestern,
Mediterranean and Asian cuisines. Prices are moderate and
certainly worth it. Soups, sauces and marinades and salad
dressings are made fresh in-house. The salmon was very
good, and as a $15.00 entrée it would be north of $20.00
elsewhere. We do not want Dave to know this, so let’s keep
it a secret so we can come back and enjoy the good food and
spirits again and save a few bucks.
Happy Hour notification; we try and send out invitations
to Mavericks via email that have not joined the MRPCA@
YahooGroups.com email list. If you have not done so, it
is highly recommended that you join. First of all you get
race chatter and other technical information from our more
communicative members and you learn about happenings
24
Guess who just got married?
Congratulations to John & B J Harvey
Photos by Chris Christensen
around the Maverick PCA community. Secondly, when
we email out alerts regarding Happy Hour you are sure to
receive a timely reminder email about four days prior to the
event. We try and pick up all new Mavericks’ emails that
are sent to us from PCA corporate, but some of the older
emails that we have on file are no
longer working. Just a thought for
those who want to be kept up to date,
so please join-up. Go to mav.pca.
org for more information regarding
joining.
So with that said, we had a few new
Mavericks visit us at Happy Hour this
month. They were; Becky Freeman
who owns a pretty sporty 2002 911
with her name on the plate. We will
know her forever coming and going.
Also welcome Scott Mesenbrink
who drives a 2007 C4S Cab. As some
of you may know, I want a 911 very badly. So whenever
you new 911 guys show up I get very jealous. Lastly we
want to recognize Tommy Snyder who became a member

the same day as Happy Hour. He is a principle at Alpen
Motor Sports located in Colleyville. A small plug for his
new business and a big good luck also. By the way, Tommy
was driving the 944 Cab.
One of a few Porsches that
he has available.
As mentioned we had
a good turn-out, but
although we do not know
the specifics we heard that
there were newlyweds in
the crowd. I don’t want
to embarrass them of
Dee Luxbacher & Doug Koeppen
course….but you may
guess who they are in a
picture in this HH news bulletin. It is a good testimonial to
Porsches slogan that “it is not about the cars, it is about the
people” or something like that. I suppose it is about meeting
people with common interests and what better venue then
Happy Hour…..and Porsches.
In July we returned to Big Buck’s in Grapevine which is
located next to the Bass Pro Shop in front of the
Grapevine Mills Mall, 2501 Bass Pro Drive, Grapevine
Texas. Each month we will try and move around the
Metroplex so that almost everyone gets a chance for a short
drive to Happy Hour.
Tech Corner
By Ed Mullinex
Here we are in August already.
Parade has come and gone and
Roundup is this month. June and
July just sort of whizzed by, distinguished
only by lots of heat, and lots of rain in June,
followed by lots more heat. I recall in May
wishing the cold weather would go
away so as the old saying goes, be
careful what you wish for!
Again this year, as I have done for the past two,
I employed summer help. I collaborate with the
Richardson School District to help provide summer
jobs for High School kids. Mark
Mester, the automotive program
manager at RHS, has a pretty good
handle on the kids in his program
that have the talent and want to pursue a career as auto
technicians. He has his candidates prepare a resume and
arrange a job interview. Excellent training for youngsters
just leaving the nest. This year, Mark gave me a list of five
potential candidates. I interviewed all of them. It’s sort
of like going to get a new puppy. You see an entire litter
of them, so picking just one is difficult. Out of the five,
two stood out as being particularly talented (extensive
experience taking stuff apart at home and for the most part,
getting it back together) and really wanted to be technicians.
Every year when I go through this process, I think back to
the days of my youth when I too, was eager to be a “Jedi
Porsche Mechanic.” Master Yoda, aka Sid Checkaj, was
a patient man! I was only going to employ one apprentice
this year, but as with the puppy selection process, I took
on two. They are good kids and other than my being run
ragged making sure they follow procedure and not breaking
anything, I don’t regret taking on the additional help.
Summer driving brings with it some unique considerations.
Those of us who, from time to time, are forced to leave our
cars parked outside for hours in the sun know only too well
how uncomfortably hot leather upholstered seats and
steering wheels can be. I usually bring towels along and
drape them over my dash, steering wheel, and seat. This
time of year, one would be advised to apply plenty of leather
dressing to the seats and dash. Some other issues that are
common in summer are degraded A/C cooling and cooling
system failures. Other than the Cayenne that has huge
condensers up front, Porsches will usually not freeze you
out while driving on a hot day. The water-cooled variants
seem to have better A/C cooling than the pre 1990 air-cooled
predecessors. If you have an air cooled 911, you should
make sure the A/C is turned off before you open the engine
lid to check your oil. The primary condenser is located
under the air intake grill. The engine fan pulls air across the
condenser to dissipate the heat. With the engine lid up, no
air flows across the condenser and the A/C system pressure
rises dramatically in just a few seconds. Not good for the
A/C compressor! On the subject of cooling system failures,
if you have a water-cooled type that experiences overheating
while driving, pull off the road and turn off the
engine. Do not immediately go open the radiator
cap! The cooling system is pressurized to 22 psi.
Normal operating temperature is 190 degrees F. A
hot engine can exceed 250 degrees. My bride still
has a scar on her thigh from a nasty burn she received
after opening the radiator cap on an
overheating engine. After waiting
several minutes, the coolant level
can be checked and if needed, topped
off with coolant mix that is no more than
50% anti-freeze. On the air-cooled cars, that skinny little
belt back there turning the fan and alternator provide all of
the cooling for the engine. If the belt breaks, pull over and
stop the engine (this applies to the water-cooled as well.)
Running the engine without a belt can cause extensive
engine damage (think $) in only a few minutes.
