DT 26 WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 7, 2016 Sport Abahani do the double over Mohammedan • Tribune Report Abahani Limited moved five points clear at the top of the Bangladesh Premier League after winning the season’s second Dhaka derby 2-1 over arch-rival Mohammedan Sporting Club Limited in the last match at the full-house Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni Stadium in Gopalganj yesterday. The Sky Blues’ top two performers this season, English midfielder Lee Andrew Tuck and Nigerian striker Sunday Chizoba carried on their amazing form netting one apiece in the second half to give George Kottan’s side their 12th league win. The victory put the Dhanmondi outfit in a position of authority at the summit of the points table as they extended their lead to five points with second-placed Chittagong Abahani with only four more rounds left. The five losses virtually ousted Comilla from the playoff race. The franchise recruited some good players in the draft in the shape of Pakistan all-rounders Imad Wasim and Sohail Tanvir and opening batsman Ahmed Shehzad but were unable to produce the desired result and eventually finished their campaign at sixth position in the points table. Comilla managed to win five out of 12 matches. They restored some lost pride by winning their last four matches in a row. Comilla struggled to find the right combination in the first matches or so. In the first few matches, they picked four overseas all-rounders in the playing XI – Tanvir, Wasim, West Indies’ Marlon Samuels and Ashar Zaidi - but the strategy did not work. The top-order did not click for Comilla in the first and second phase. The faltering opening batting pair was always a headache for Comilla as they tried out various combinations. Wicketkeeper-batsman Liton Kumar Das, left-hander Imrul Kayes, youngster Nazmul Hossain Shanto, Pakistan’s Khalid Latif and Jasimuddin were all tried as openers but nothing clicked for the holders and it affected them a great deal. Comilla will surely try to forget this season, fix their team combination and achieve something good next time around. They kept the opposition defence busy but failed to find the back of the net despite creating a number of chances in the first half. Mohammedan, on the other hand, looked his team needed him the most. The opener finished with 257 runs in 12 innings. Shanto was impressive with the willow scoring 180 runs in 12 innings but his strike rate was not up to the mark, bearing in mind the T20 format. Mashrafe was brilliant with the leather taking 13 wickets in 12 innings. Spinner Nabil Samad made some valuable contributions picking up eight wickets in 10 innings. But the experienced Mohammad Sharif was disappointing as he managed only two wickets in seven matches. Foreign players Samuels was impressive with the bat. The two-time World T20 champion scored 334 runs in just eight innings with a staggering average of 66.80. Opener Shehzad also batted well making 247 runs in eight innings. But the chief disappointment was Zaidi. Zaidi was Comilla’s star performer last season. But this year, the all-rounder struggled to find his rhythm and played only three matches. Another disappointment for Comilla was Wasim. The highly rated all-rounder is regarded as one of the best T20 players in recent times. But Wasim only played two matches bagging as many wickets and scoring only five runs. Comilla’s best overseas player with the ball was perhaps Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan. The leggie was magnificent throughout the tournament. He took 13 wickets in just eight matches at an economy rate of 6.06. • disorganised and struggled to find their rhythm. It was Sunday’s 19th league goal which is five more than anyone else. The goal also marked the league’s 280th goal this season. Mohammedan pulled one back moments before the final whistle through a simple tap-in by Cameroonian defender Pouemi Landry but it was too little, too late. The game concluded the Gopalganj chapter in the topflight. The fifth venue hosted six matches of the 18th round. CONMEBOL awards Copa Sudamericana to Chapecoense • Reuters, Asuncion South American soccer’s governing body CONMEBOL awarded the 2016 Copa Sudamericana championship to Brazil’s Chapecoense club on Monday after most of the team died in a plane crash in Colombia last week. Only six people survived the crash en route to the final, which killed 71 passengers and crew, shocked football fans worldwide, and plunged Brazil into mourning. Colombia’s Club Atletica Nacional, which would have played Chapecoense in the biggest game in the club’s history, asked for the trophy to be awarded to the Brazilian team to honor the victims, CONME- BOL said in a statement. Jayalalithaa was chief minister of southern India’s Tamil Nadu state, of which Chennai is the capital. The fifth Test in the current series between India and England is scheduled to be held at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium from Dec. 16-20, but local media reported that the BCCI is considering switching venues. “An unfortunate incident has taken place in Chennai, but the BCCI is making clear that no decision has been taken regarding Chennai test,” BCCI secretary Ajay Shirke told a news conference yesterday.
