International Short and
Independent Film Festival (ISIFF),
a Biennale film event, is taking
place since 1988. It is one of
the oldest festival of short films
organised independently in South
Asia. Bangladesh Short Film
Forum, the pioneer organisation
of independent Bangladeshi
filmmakers are organising this film
festival, with a vision to promote
the culture of independent and
alternative cinema across the
region. •
Jayalalithaa’s little known Bollywood stint
Jimmy Kimmel to host the
2017 Oscars
Apart from her charismatic
political career, the recently deceased
Tamil Nadu chief minister
J Jayalalithaa, reigned over an
enviable acting career in South
Indian cinema. However, what is
little known, is that the superstar
of south cinema featured in a few
Hindi films as well.
In the midst of her successful
movie career, Jayalalithaa starred
opposite Dharmendra in a 1968
Hindi movie, titled Izzat. The
film was directed by the popular
Tamil-Telugu director T Prakash
Rao, who had a distinction of
making several successful Hindi
films in the 1960s, with leading
ladies from the South. Rao’s
cultural comfort in transitioning
between Tamil and Hindi cinema
was the reason he was given
the responsibility of launching
Jayalalithaa in Bollywood.
In the film, she played an
ethnic girl who falls in love with a
rich boy. Remembering his co-star
after her sad demise, Dharmendra
said Jayalalithaa’s role in Izzat was
similar to that of Basanti (played
by Hema Malini) in Sholay (1975).
However, the former Tamil Nadu
chief minister used to stay quiet
on the sets when not acting.
Despite Rao’s track record of
delivering box-office successes,
Izzat failed to make money and
the movie sank without a trace.
However, many remember
Jayalalithaa’s graceful dancing
to Lata Mangeshkar’s “Jaagi re
badan mein jaala saiyyan tuney
kya kar dala” in the film.
Jayalalithaa first appeared as a
child-artist in Man Mauji (1962),
where she played the role of Lord
Krishna in a dance sequence.
Kishore Kumar and Sadhna
played the lead roles in the
film. She was a trained Kathak,
Mohiniattam, and Manipuri
dancer. •
Jimmy Kimmel, American
comedian and television host,
has been confirmed to host the
Academy Awards next February.
The host of the late-night
talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live,
confirmed the news himself
in a mid-day tweet. “Yes, I am
hosting the Oscars. This is not a
prank. And if it is, my revenge on
@TheAcademy will be terrible
and sweet,” he wrote.
Oscars producers Michael De
Luca and Jennifer Todd, revealed
the announcement of hiring
Jimmy Kimmel for the job of The
Hollywood Reporter who broke
the news.
“I grew up with a little
Johnny Carson as host, a lot
with Billy Crystal, I loved the
Ellen (DeGeneres) year and
Steve Martin,” De Luca told USA
TODAY in early November, prior
to Kimmel’s hiring. “I like funny
people who can riff and improve,
throw out one-liners based on the
evening’s events. But I think if
we had one word to describe how
we want people to feel during the
show, we want joy.”
Meanwhile, Jimmy Kimmel got
some mileage of out his new gig
as the Oscar host in the opening
monologue of Monday’s edition of
Jimmy Kimmel Live.
“A lot of things happened to
me over the last two weeks. I got a
tummy tuck. They still give those.
I had my eyes done and I think
they look great, right? I also went
to Dry Bar, I got an up-do. I had
my whole body done. I read online
today that in February – I will be
hosting the Oscars,” he said.
Kimmel also joked about
the extremely late timing of
the 89th Academy Awards host
announcement. He poked fun at
the fact that he was probably not
the first choice of Michael De Luca
and Jennifer Todd.
Though, this will be his first
time hosting the Oscars, Kimmel,
49, is no stranger to hosting duties,
having earned strong notices for
his work hosting the Emmys this
year. He also hosted the TV-centric
show in 2012, and past hosted the
American Music Awards. •
