Resilient Cities Asia — Pacific 2016 Congress
Melaka joins Earth Hour
City Challenge 2015
MELAKA was one of the
Malaysian cities which
participated in The Earth
Hour City Challenge
( EHCC ). The other s
were Penang, Petaling
Jaya and Kuching North
The Earth Hour City Challenge is a year longcompetition
among cities to promote renewable
energy and prepare for climate change. EHCC is
an initiative designed by WWF to mobilize action
and support from cities in the global transition
towards a climate friendly, one-planet future and
to stimulate the development and dissemination
of best practises for climate change mitigation and
adaptation.
It will be run as a recurrent and increasingly
global challenge for cities to present ambitious,
holistic, inspiring and credible plans for low
carbon development and for dramatically increasing
the use of sustainable and efficient renewable
energy solutions in the next few decades.
The program is supported by documentation
EHCC winner to be announced in June
reporting by agencies / local authorities on
climate data. MBMB has committed to participate
in EHCC and reported all the green initiatives
that have been implemented to meet the aspirations
of Melaka state government to create the
city of Melaka as a low-carbon and green technology
state.
Clean air for smaller cities
A few actions that have been reported for
Melaka Historic City Council are the Clean
Air for Smallest Cities Project, Melaka River
Rehabilitation Project, green mobility, tree planting,
renewable energy, waste management and a
few more.
MBMB held a two-day Workshop & Data
THE Project “Clean Air for Smaller
Cities in the ASEAN Region” ( CASC
) is funded by the German Federal
Ministry for Economic Cooperation
and Development ( BMZ ) and implemented
by German International
Cooperation ( GIZ ) in cooperation
with ASEAN Secretariat. It aims to
empower local governments of smaller
cities to develop and implement Clean
Air Plan ( CAP ) in order to improve
living conditions.
The city of Melaka is the CASC participant
city in Malaysia. Under CASC
, an Emissions Inventory ( EI ) was
conducted for Melaka City in collaboration
with MBMB, JAS and partner
university UTeM .
Emission inventory covers the area
of Majlis Bandaraya Melaka Bersejarah
( MBMB ) municipality, covering
the approximated area of 273 km2 .
The aims of Emission Inventory are
to evaluate the air quality status and
to evaluate the effectiveness of the
policy. Besides, purpose of Emission
Inventory is to identify emission
sources, determine the level of compliance
with the quality standard limits
emissions and determine ambient air
monitoring sites.
MBMB had organised Clean Air
Plan Prioritization Workshop on 2
September 2015 and attended by
