If that person decides that something should be done, or needs to be done, because he had seen the larger picture of the good that it can bring, then there can be no one better to lead the charge. Meet Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ir Idris Haron. Under his watch, Melaka has made several strides towards realizing the goals of the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Najib Razak. Melaka is the only State in the Malaysia that has a “no plastic bags” policy, among other things, while the rest of Malaysia has not progressed from the “Saturday only” stance. For the delegates at this Resilient Cities Asia- Pacific 2016 in Melaka, a trip down history lane is compelling. It will help understand why Melaka has stolen a march on the rest of the country in advancing green technology and sustainability and an ecofriendly environment. Because this is where even Malayan civilization begun, in 1400. History has it that an Indian prince, Parameswara, who was fleeing from Sumatra, arrived on Melaka’s shores in the late 14th century. While resting under a tree during a hunt, one of Parameswara’s dogs cornered a mousedeer. The defensive instinct of themousedeer saw it pushing the dog into the river. All this had not passed Parameswara, who was amazed by the mousedeer’s tenacity and will to survive. Parameswara decided then and there, that he would reside at that place, naming it Melaka after the Melaka tree in the shades of which he sought rest. There began Malayan civilization, and Parameswara eventually embraced Islam and became known as Iskandar Shah. Under Sultan Mansur Shah, Melaka became a protectorate of China, and the relationship was cemented by Sultan Mansur Shah’s marriage to Hang Li Po, whose attendants also married locals to breed the people we today know as Babas. Melaka fell under the Portuguese empire in 1511, the Dutch in 1641 and eventually Britain in 1824. Melaka strategic position along the popular Straits of Malacca made it a popular stop for seafarers. Melaka was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2008. Efforts to preserve Melaka have been ongoing Datuk Seri Ir Idris who has been pushing the no-holds-barred “green” agenda to maximum capacity. It is Melaka’s intention to be declared a Green Technology City by 2020. Melaka GreenTech Corporation, under the stewardship of Chief Executive Officer Datuk Kamaruddin Mohd Shah, has been co-ordinating the State’s efforts to ensure timelines and benchmarks are strictly adhered to.
