NUMBER AND FLOW OF PEOPLE Ano<strong>the</strong>r factor which increased in <strong>the</strong> designated space during <strong>the</strong> VIVID festival was <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> people that were observed in, or moving through, <strong>the</strong> space. During <strong>the</strong> periods before and after VIVID, a range <strong>of</strong> 153 to 215 people were counted in <strong>the</strong> space. During <strong>the</strong> VIVID festival, <strong>the</strong>re was 599 people; more than double <strong>the</strong> amount <strong>of</strong> any period that was recorded o<strong>the</strong>rwise. A comparative analysis <strong>of</strong> this data is shown by figure 5.16. This suggests that <strong>the</strong> shift in <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> a place has <strong>the</strong> ability to cause a swelling <strong>of</strong> people who engage with <strong>the</strong> place through sheer curiosity and interest. This is particularly exacerbated in <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> this study, as <strong>the</strong> VIVID festival is an internationally marketed, premiere event that Sydney runs every year. This alters <strong>the</strong> experience <strong>of</strong> place quite dramatically in terms <strong>of</strong> how <strong>the</strong> behaviours <strong>of</strong> people change, as discussed fur<strong>the</strong>r in parallel with <strong>the</strong> literature in <strong>the</strong> following chapter. The percentage <strong>of</strong> people that moved through <strong>the</strong> space slowly during <strong>the</strong> VIVID festival was also larger in proportion compared to when it was not active. During VIVID, <strong>the</strong> percentage <strong>of</strong> people that moved through <strong>the</strong> space slowly was 27%; <strong>the</strong> highest amongst all <strong>the</strong> periods <strong>of</strong> mapping. This, in part, is due to <strong>the</strong> congested nature <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> event causing people to get stuck behind o<strong>the</strong>rs. However, it is also likely a direct link to <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> festival, one which aims for people to stop, engage and observe with <strong>the</strong> environment around <strong>the</strong>m. The implications for this in terms <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> attraction, use and attachment to place is discussed fur<strong>the</strong>r in <strong>the</strong> following chapter alongside <strong>the</strong> understood literature. DURATION OF 'STAY' IN PLACE During <strong>the</strong> period when <strong>the</strong> VIVID festival was active, <strong>the</strong> amount <strong>of</strong> time spent by each individual or group in <strong>the</strong> space increased. During <strong>the</strong> period which <strong>the</strong> VIVID festival was active, 36% <strong>of</strong> people stopped at any point in time in <strong>the</strong> space. This compared to <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r sessions is dramatically higher, as shown by figure 5.17. This is a reflection again <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> intent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> festival; it is something which aims to get people to stop and be engaged with a place and ideas. There was slightly more people who stopped in <strong>the</strong> space after <strong>the</strong> VIVID festival compared to those before <strong>the</strong> VIVID festival. This may potentially be a result <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lingering effects on <strong>the</strong> festival that cause people to stay more in a place as a result <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir positive experience <strong>the</strong>y had during <strong>the</strong> activity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> festival, however future research is needed to be able to determine <strong>the</strong> validity <strong>of</strong> this notion. It is also likely that this trend is apparent due to <strong>the</strong> increase in warmer wea<strong>the</strong>r as it gets closer to <strong>the</strong> warmer seasons. There is significance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> amount <strong>of</strong> time a person stays in a place in relation to <strong>the</strong>ir attraction to place. It is directly related to how much someone personally ‘invests’ into a place; <strong>the</strong> longer someone is in a place, generally <strong>the</strong> more vivid <strong>the</strong> memory and interest <strong>of</strong> place (Stedman 2003). Additionally, as <strong>the</strong> VIVID festival causes people to spend more time in place a consequential effect can be <strong>the</strong> building <strong>of</strong> an attachment to a place as described fur<strong>the</strong>r is <strong>the</strong> discussion chapter. 50
