What was the Norrmalmstorg robbery?<br />

On 23 August 1973, Stockholm’s Kreditbanken endured a<br />

hostage situation when Jan-Erik Olsson wreaked havoc in<br />

theSwedishcapital.Thecriminalgunmandemandedthat<br />

hisfriendandbankrobberClarkOlofssonbebroughttohim<br />

along with 3 million Swedish Kronor and more weaponry.<br />

Olofssonwasbroughttothelocation,andoverthenextfew<br />

Olsson was sentenced to ten years in prison<br />

for his part in the Norrmalmstorg robbery<br />

but Olofsson was released on appeal<br />

days,thetwotookupresidenceinthebankvaultwiththe<br />

hostages.Therobberydidn’tgetfarandendedon28August<br />

whenthepolicemanagedtocapturethetwogunmen.<br />

Duringthesixdays,anunusualsituationunfoldedinthe<br />

bankvaultinwhichthecaptivesbegantosympathisewith<br />

thecrookswhohadimprisonedthem.Behavioursuchas<br />

this is now known as Stockholm Syndrome.<br />
