clearly that Allah may intend for us to be the best, and may demand that we be the best, but that
ultimately this is not something we have lived up to yet.
I also think you are fully justified in finding it odd, and perhaps a little surprising, as you travel the
world and do not see so clearly that people are out to get you. I also think you will often recognize
that though you are a Muslim, and a member of a global community of Muslims, you disagree not just
with some of them, but with a lot of them. And you may feel guilty for these thoughts. Don’t feel guilty.
What you are experiencing is the same set of facts from the perspective of a different mental universe.
I am talking about the special mental universe that lies in your head. And rest assured that Islam has
the tools and the flexibility to guide you through a world where areas of gray predominate.
I used to think that answers being either black or white was a blessing. But after a while they seem
inadequate. Remember that the answers that are so cutting and decisive are not the answers that Islam
is giving, but the answers that a “knowledgeable” person with a background in the written material is
giving.
You and your friends engage in this type of activity all the time. Every time you leave a cinema and
you discuss the film you have just watched, each of you will have a slightly different take on the
movie. The characters will be seen differently, the story will be understood differently by each of
you. Some of you will have stepped out of the cinema for a few minutes and thus missed a crucial
piece of information that holds the film together. Others will have dozed on and off, not particularly
taken by the story. Each of you can be said to have watched the film, and the film has not changed in
any way. In fact, the film is unchangeable. But each of you has taken the film on in a different and
particularly individual way. And for each of you the film is actually a different experience.
My point here is that differences will occur, and they will occur in the places that you have been
taught to expect clarity and consistency.
Life is diverse. Living is to live with difference. Anyone telling you that difference should be
stamped out is stamping out life. Those people insisting that there are black and white answers to the
difficult questions are stamping out the diversity that is inherent in life.
