“ISLAM IS A RELIGION OF PEACE”
Habeebie Saif,
In reading the newspapers or watching the news, you will have come across the phrase “Islam is a
religion of peace.” Every time a violent act is committed by Muslims in the West, or a terrorist act is
connected to Muslim perpetrators, someone from the Muslim community will appear in public stating
that Islam is a religion of peace. In the Arab world, we hear the same phrase repeated. Great scholars
of our religion state it again and again. Leaders of countries make this statement.
It seems a simple statement. Why should Islam or any religion be anything other than peaceful? The
idea of religion and peace seem to go hand in hand. It would sound wrong if we said that we have a
religion of war, or a religion of anger, or a religion of violence. So why do I get uncomfortable every
time I hear the phrase “Islam is a religion of peace”?
You know I do not like statements that do not take us anywhere. A statement like “Islam is a
religion of peace” is simply that: a statement. It does not explain anything to you or me. It does not
explain why violence is often committed in the name of Islam. It does not tell me how we express our
Islam in a manner that is peaceful. When I hear the phrase, I burn with the desire to know where we
go next. What do we do with this peaceful religion of ours?
Well, in this letter to you today, Saif, I want to explore with you some of my ideas and some of my
questions about peace within Islam. I hope that by exploring some of these ideas and questions, we
can both come to a better understanding.
I hear the statement and I imagine the next lines. “Islam is a religion of peace, because we no
longer live in the Middle Ages and we do not think that religions need armies and borders to defend
themselves. It is a religion of peace because Islam is a state of mind and grace, rather than a team of
warriors who can only look at the world from their self-defined perspective as warriors. Islam is a
religion of peace because if we are to think of ourselves as a group, then we are an ethical group, not
a military group. And as an ethical group or community, we work in the world through ethical
behavior, not military tactics or prowess. Islam is a religion of peace because to be otherwise is to
make a mockery of our Prophet’s legendary care and kindness. Islam is a religion of peace, not
because elderly scholars or smooth public spokesmen tell us that it is, but because we live it every
day in a manner that reflects calm, self-possession, discipline, and attention to the needs of others.”
