ROUND UP
Equestrian team successes
at National Championships
On the weekend of 21st to the
24th October, five members of
the QEGS Horncastle Equestrian
team travelled to the prestigious
National Schools Equestrian
Association Championships at
Addington Manor Equestrian
Centre in Buckinghamshire.
Over the summer, year nine
pupil Ava Vernon managed a
hat-trick, qualifying for the
championships in the 90cm, 1m
and 1.10m show jumping classes.
At the finals, Ava and her two
ponies were again on top form,
coming 5th in the 1.10m and 8th
in the 1m on her pony Rockin
Roxie and narrowly missing out
on a placing in the 90cm on Mr
Pebbles.
Our pupils took part in the team
dressage competition following
their qualification at Arena
UK in June. Year 11 pupil and
Team Captain, Rosie Finney and
Llechryd Lorra enjoyed successes
on both competition days,
coming 4th in the warm up class
and 7th in the main competition.
Abigail Lawson (year 9) and
Springleaze Hope and Glory
came 7th in their arena in the
warm up class. Fellow team
members Holly Newton (year
10) riding Langmeade Sweetie
Pie and Lucy Robertson (year 7)
and Barty also rode great tests,
however the team were sadly out
of the ribbons.
Equestrian team members,
Charlotte Lawson and Georgia
Newton also attended the event
doing essential work as grooms.
The Championships attracted
over 800 competitors from
schools as far away as the
Shetland and Scilly Isles as well
as some of the top equestrians in
the country. The event includes
team and individual classes in
show jumping, dressage, arena
eventing and jumping with style.
Ava, Rosie and Abigail had the
additional pressure of competing
against members of the GB
junior eventing team.
Team manager, Gail Newton
said “I am very proud of all
the pupils competing at the
championships, who performed
brilliantly against some of the
best horses & ponies in the
country”.
On their return the team
discovered that several members
had qualified to contest the
NSEA ‘Plate’ in December at
Keysoe Equestrian Centre in
Bedfordshire.
Glittering gold and silver medals
brought delight to the faces of the
children at Caistor Equestrian Centre
Nicola Wilson, Three
Day Event rider, Silver
Medallist in team GB
London 2012, Team Gold
at the World Equestrian
Games, Team Gold and
Bronze at the European
Championship, was
the honoured guest at Caistor
Equestrian Centre in their pageant “The Celebration of the
Horse”.
It was a moving and emotional evening where many people
had tears in their eyes as the rousing music introduced horses
from scenes gone by covering the last 100 years, including
Horses in Agriculture; Ponies in Industry; War Horses; Horses
in Sport and Horses in Daily Life. There was a Pony Club
demonstration from the 1930s.
The closing ceremony demonstrated the role the horse now
plays in modern day society with themes from the Police Horse
to Horses in Sport.
The evening rounded off with Celebrity guest, Nicola Wilson
giving an account of her initial days with ponies at her local
Pony Club Branch and how through hard work, perseverance
and commitment - riding the highs with the lows – right
through to being picked for the GB Olympic Team in London.
The pageant successfully raised £2101 towards a very good
cause, “Jill’s Wheels” where a specialist wheelchair has been
purchased for Jill after a riding accident. The wheel chair
has made such a difference to the quality of Jill’s life. Natalie
Allsopp (Jill’s daughter) and her grandchildren, were presented
with flowers by Nicola on behalf of Mr and Mrs Lintin, the
owners of Caistor Equestrian Centre.
