5). I za każdym razem mam przed oczami te same obrazki. Marcin Baron redaktor naczelny From the editor I like the text… that takes us back to the year 1936 so that we can take a walk with dr Józef Lisak and dr Tadeusz Kupczyński in the Muchowiec Forest, listening in on their conversation about teaching economics in Upper Silesia – “economics, but slightly different, more practical”. The transcript of this discussion, reconstructed by dr Józef Lisak and brought back to see the light of day by Prof. Alojzy Czech, repeatedly tugs at my heart. I often quoted it in the Forum* on the University’s anniversary days – I am quoting a fragment now (page 5). It always evokes the same images. The future first rector, capturing the meaning of educating economists – today we would say managers, too – in the forest of chimneys; the interlocutors hopefully looking forward to greater openness to the world; the eloquent yet pragmatic dr Kupczyński, saying that “it has to be concrete knowledge, not some drawn-out deliberations, however interesting they might be”. Every time I read these texts, I also confront them with what I know about the university of today, and with what I have been learning about it for the last 20 years. And then I know for sure – the ambitions of the two men did come true. Even though we may occasionally wish things were a bit better or a little different here and there, we have no reason to feel ashamed. We deal with a wide range of economic issues – from those chimneys to the markets of stateof-the-art technologies. We are part of international cooperation networks and we implement meaningful and important projects with the partners from around the world. We take great pride in our academic heritage, but we also keep our feet firmly on the ground in order to teach professionalism and advise business practitioners. Even our slogan: your place – your space – your future, embodies and testifies to this conversation from more than 80 years ago. I suddenly realized that as I was writing these words. So, Dear Readers, keep up to date with what is happening at the University hic et nunc, but also look for traces of the past and nurture our traditions together with the entire academic community. I hand over the latest Forum to you and extend the wishes of at least another 180 successful years to our University!
