The Silesian Museum
– knowledge
and emotions
33
Neighbor to the University of
Economics in Katowice, the Silesian
Museum is visited by an increasingly
large number of people, testifying
to the power of art and our need to
discover the culture. The multitude of
visitors also confirm the popularity of
various events organized on the site,
which give the Museum new energy
and significance.
The “Start with the culture” initiative launched by the
Silesian Museum provided students with the opportunity
to experience the unique character of this place.
Throughout October, they were allowed entrance to
the Museum’s permanent and temporary exhibitions
for the token fee of one Polish zloty. Visitors had the
opportunity to admire a variety of exhibits, including
the works by famous artists displayed in the galleries
of old and contemporary Polish art, a multimedia
exhibition of the history of the Upper Silesia, and the
exciting installations by the famous Israeli artist Dani
Karavan. It is worth mentioning that the offer to visit
the Museum free of charge did not expire with the
end of the “Start with the culture” initiative; entrance
is free every Tuesday.
What’s new?
Apart from housing a collection of paintings, sculpture
and art installations, the Silesian Museum holds thematic
meetings devoted to unique pieces of architecture,
such as the Warsaw Fotoplastikon, mainly associated
with the movie “Vabank” directed by J. Machulski.
Owing to the three-dimensional illusion viewers are
transported, if only for a while, to the magic world of
our ancestors. Painting lovers are welcomed to attend
lectures in the series “Znani i zapomniani” [“The wellknown
and the forgotten”], which remind us that the
lives and work of the less famous artists are often
as fascinating and admirable as those of the masters.
The latest pro-social project, entitled “Szychta
kreatywna” [in the Silesian dialect: “A creative work
shift”], focuses on the urban space revitalization, local
people’s needs, community engagement, and public
consultation on the use of the revitalized areas. Everybody
is invited to the forum that will be held in March
2017, constituting the final stage of the project and
summarizing all the previous editions, broadened by
the nationwide contexts and perspectives.
