Use different clubs from greenside bunkers
4I work with Pete Cowen on my bunker
If you have a solid basic technique, it’s
how far your standard bunker shot
play – and I believe he’s the best in the
easier to hit the ball different distances
goes with each club from 9-iron to LW
world. Most amateurs always use the
by changing the club rather than the
and simply change clubs to suit the
same club from the sand but this
technique. Especially when you don’t
yardage on the course like you would
makes it tougher to hit different shots.
have much time to practice. Work out
for full shots.
The club will exit lower
than for other shots
because of the shallower
attack angle required to
slide the clubhead
through the sand and
under the ball. The face
is pointing to the sky.
Positioning the ball
forward of centre in the
stance makes it much
easier to impact the
sand before the ball with
a shallow attack angle
and keep accelerating
through impact.
SET UP FOR SHALLOW
I set up a little open to the target with
my feet, hips and shoulders, add loft to
the clubface, flex my knees to get my
hands low and lean the shaft away from
the target a little when you look face on.
CHANGE YOUR CLUB
It’s much easier to alter your distance by
changing clubs rather than swing speed
and how much sand you take. I use
everything from LW to 9-iron to adjust
my distances from greenside sand.
