(NAPSI)—Here’s news that may warm your heart-and your home.
There’s now a new resource from the Eldercare Locator to help keep older adults safe and warm
during the cold weather months. It’s a brochure called “Winter Warmth and Safety: Home Energy
Tips for Older Adults,” and it provides tips about preparing a home for winter weather and saving
money on energy expenses.
• Make sure your home is energy efficient by installing a programmable
thermostat and sealing and insulating ducts.
• Learn about energy assistance programs such as the Low-Income Home
Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) and utility no-cutoff programs.
• Avoid the risk of home fires by not using your stove or oven to heat your home.
• Make sure carbon monoxide detectors are installed and working properly.
• Learn about Weatherization Assistance Programs (WAP).
• Be sure to schedule a check-up of your heating equipment. Dirt and neglect are the No. 1 cause of
heating system failure.
• Insulate water pipes to avoid freezing and bursting. Be sure to drain and turn off outside waterspouts.
• Identify alternative living arrangements should extreme weather conditions occur. Have a plan ready.
Even though it is February,
I feel like we have
been quite lucky that we
haven’t had that much
snow and many days have
been warmer than you
would think they should
be. I’ve always felt that it
was strange that if it is 32
degrees for a while, if it
gets to be 50 degrees, it
feels like a warm spell. If it
is 70 degrees for a while
and drops to 50 degrees,
it feels like a cold snap.
I’ve always been a fan of
warmer weather and would
prefer 80 degrees for most
of the year, than to have
temperatures near freezing
or near zero.
I usually sleep with a comforter
even in the summer
as my wife likes to keep it
cool in the bedroom.
I think back of going to my
grandparents on Sundays
and if it was cooler outside
it was always hot in the living
room. It was a great
excuse to have a nap.
Who ever “they” are,
“they” say that if you stay
cold it is due to poor circulation.
I guess I was
born with it.
But in some cases, it may
just be what I have gotten
used to. When I was
younger, I worked on a
night shift and could sleep
during the day if it was
sweaty hot, and with the
t.v. on and the lights on
and company in the house
talking.
Now I have gotten used to
getting up early and even
if it is a day off I still don’t
spend half a day in bed.
I have even gone to the
beach and slept, something
that I don’t recommend.
If you don’t have
someone to keep an eye
on you and you don’t wake
up, you can get a nasty
burn.
I have had jobs that I’ve
had to spend time outside
even in the cold. A
few years ago it seemed
that it stayed around
zero for about a month
solid and I would be
careful to bundle up in
layers, but I didn’t
seemed to get sick as
much as when it was
cold but when it started
warming up outside is
when I would catch a
nasty cold. It could have
been allergies, but I
can’t remember that everything
had started getting
green again.
That’s something else
that I miss in the cold is
the color and the brightness
of the sun instead
of the gloominess.
WHERE WILL YOU BE TWO YEARS FROM NOW?
TEXT: But after two years Porcius Festus came into Felix’ room;
and Felix, willing to shew the Jews a pleasure, left Paul bound
(Acts 24:37)
INTRODUCTION: Here is the case of a man who heard the preaching
of the gospel, trembled with conviction, but took the attitude,
“Not now-but later.” Let’s look at him two years later.
I. UNFULFILLED DESIRES
II.
A. When Paul preached temperance to him there is no doubt
in my mind that he desired to be temperate, but he still
is living a dissolute life.
B. When Paul preached righteousness, Felix no doubt saw
great possibilities in the life of holiness, but he still lives
in sin.
C. The preaching of the judgment, I am sure created desire
in Felix to be ready, but this hour finds him sadly
unprepared.
WASTED OPPORTUNITIES
A. He sent for Paul the oftener (v. 26). He had many more
convenient seasons, but they did not mean his salvation
B. He communed with Paul (v. 26). He listened again to
Paul, but this time...
C. Greed of gain choked out the spiritual desire for the things
of God. Verse 26 says that he hoped that Paul would give
him money.
III. LOST SOUL
A. Felix left no testimony that he ever was saved.
B. He left no influence for good behind him when he left
this life.
C. He fades from the pages of history under a cloud of
sadness.
I’M LOOKING FOR A CARD THAT SAYS IF I DIDN’T
GET YOU THIS, I’D NEVER HEAR THE END OF IT.
CONCLUSION: Christ is dealing with your heart tonight. If
you give the well-known excuse of “Not tonight,” let me ask
you-will your chances be any better one, two, or three years
from tonight if you are alive then? No, you will be worse
off two years from tonight if you reject Christ. Now is the time.

SUDOKU Come
The rules are simple. A quick look reveals that the
puzzle is a 9-by-9 grid of squares divided into
nine 3-by-3 square blocks, with some of the
squares filled in for you. The object is to fill in
the blank squares in such a way that each
of the numbers1 to 9 appears exactly
once in each row, column, and block.
If the puzzle has been constructed properly,
there should be only one way to complete the
diagram within the rules of the game.
Despite this apparent simplicity,
solving some sudoku puzzles
can be complicated indeed.
Helpful Hints!
$750 Sign
On Bonus!
Sawing... Remember, when using a handsaw, always saw from the finished
side, and when using a powersaw, saw from the unfinished side.
Wood Tips... Even newly-purchased lumber is rarley
squared. Always check corners before measuring.
♦ If you need small odds and ends of wood to complete
a minor repair, ask your local lumber dealer if you can
look through his "scrap box".
♦ Top and bottom surfaces of plywood are graded as
either A,B, or C, depending on the appearance of the
wood. A/A finish would have smooth, well-finished wood
on both sides. A/C would have one smooth side and
one coarse side, and should cost less.
♦ Prevent splitting plywood by starting the cut with a fine-toothed saw.
♦ Keep a large paper clamp in your workshop. The next time you cut a
large piece of plywood or paneling, as soon as you've cut 6 inches, clip
the paper clamp over the cut so that it holds both cut edges at the same
level. This will help prevent the saw from binding.

Strong Community
of Followers
A lot of people read The Banner and have for years, but
we are also seeing new contacts. We get calls from places
that we don't even deliver to because a friend or family
member has passed the paper on to someone. A lot of businesses
have advertised and seen results, & some have been with
The Banner a long time. Thank You for your business, but also
you know the readers will hang onto The Banner
to find a phone number later!
If you are one of the gracious businesses that allows us to place
our paper at your location, we want to thank you,
but you will have also realized that if people know that
you have The Banner, they will ask for it. If the paper is in a
good location that can be seen, it helps the us, but also
that person will come back twice a month to your
business to get the paper and may spend more with your business.
Classifieds
Most Classifieds don't cost anything to put in,
plus you may find a good deal on something you need!
Cost for Advertisers
The Banner has reasonable pricing for its ads.
When compared to other papers, many
advertise as "Local" but we are a bonus, as we are a combination
of locals! Because The Banner goes to multiple counties,
you are sure to hit a broader customer base!
Online
Most people probably get a printed copy of our paper,
but you can go to our webpage and read the latest issue or
Obscure (Yet Interesting) Bible Characters and Their Stories
1. Naaman
2 Kings 5 tells the story of a successful Syrian commander who had the disease of leprosy.
The story goes that on the suggestion of the servant girl of Naaman’s wife Naaman went to see the
prophet Elisha to be cured of his leprosy. It is an amazing story of healing and turning to the Lord — and
also has some twists and ironies at the end!
2. Jabez
Jabez is only mentioned in a few verses of scripture and is known for his famous “Prayer of Jabez” mention
-ed in 1 Chronicles 4:10:
Jabez called upon the God of Israel, saying, ‘Oh that you would bless me and enlarge my border, and that
your hand might be with me, and that you would keep me from harm so that it might not bring me pain!’ And
God granted what he asked.
It is a simple prayer prayed in faith and serves as a powerful example of answered prayer and receiving
blessing from the Lord.
3. Josiah
Josiah, one of the greatest kings to ever rule Israel, started his reign when he was only eight years old.
2 Kings 22:2 says “he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord.”
Later on in 2 Kings 22, the story is told of the high priest finding the Book of the Law which had been
neglected and hidden for years. This caused Josiah to tear his clothes and plead with the Lord to not
punish Israel for their disobedience to God’s Word. Josiah read the Book of the Law publicly and made a
covenant with the Lord along with his people (2 Kings 23:3) to obey the Lord with all of his heart and soul.
This is truly a marvelous story of repentance, spiritual leadership, and the mercy of God!
4. Mordecai
The story of Mordecai takes place throughout the book of Esther. Mordecai is the cousin and guardian for
Esther, a foreigner who becomes queen of Persia. Mordecai uses his
position in the king’s court to stand up for the oppressed people of God
and foil a plot to assassinate the king.
This story plays a pivotal role in the gospel because if the Jewish people
had been destroyed (like Haman desired), the story of God’s saving work
through the Jewish people (and eventually Christ) would have come to
an end.
It is amazing all that God can do through people who are obedient to him!
5. The Thief on the Cross
We do not know much more about the thief on the cross other than he
was:
A criminal Crucified next to Jesus, Brought into paradise at his death
His powerful story is told in Luke 23:32-43, that describes the
conversation between Christ and the two criminals crucified alongside
of him.
The first criminal mentioned mocked Christ, “Save yourself and us!”
(23:29). The other criminal, of whom we are writing, defended Jesus in a
humble manner, acknowledging the justice of God and the innocence of
Christ. His response to the mocker was, Do you not fear God, since you
are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed justly,
for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done
nothing wrong. (vv 40-41)
Then he pleaded with Jesus to “remember me when you come into your
kingdom.” This desperate and humble cry for mercy is all that God
needed to welcome him into the family of God.
Jesus answered, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in
Paradise.” (v 43)
What an incredible story! A man who presumably led his entire life in
opposition to God, by the great mercies of God, was able to be saved in
his dying moments. This demonstrates that a humble heart that cries out
to God for salvation will be heard!
Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
♦ Protect Your Borders... China with gold borders
need special care when washing. Never use hot
water, only warm and don't rub detergent on the
gold areas.
♦ Cracking Up?... To prevent your unbordered
china plates from cracking in hot water, slide them
into the water sideways. This will distribute the heat
evenly throughout the plate.
♦ Preventing Scratches... Place napkins or paper
plates/doilies between stacked fine china plates to
eliminate scratching.
♦ Removing Scratches... To remove black cutlery
marks from the glazed surface of your fine china
plates, try this. Apply some toothpaste to a soft
cloth and rub the marks gently.
Google has started a new space
race? The $30M Google Lunar
XPRIZE is a competition to
challenge and inspire engineers,
entrepreneurs and innovators
from around the world to develop
low-cost methods of robotic
space exploration. To win
the Google Lunar XPRIZE, a
privately funded team must be
the first to successfully place a
spacecraft on the moon’s surface,
travel 500 meters on the
moon’s surface and transmit
high-definition video and images
back to earth. Five teams have
qualified to compete. The original
2012 deadline for the Google
Lunar XPrize has been extended
three times, but contest organizers
said they will stand by the
current timeline which requires
teams to launch on or before
Dec. 31.

“That sure was close, Mom,”
said Little George.
“What do you mean?” asked
his mother.
“Well, I got three days behind
in my prayers and when I heard
the thunder and saw the lightning
I prayed really hard and got
caught up and now I’m not
afraid.”
We all allow “gaps” to develop
in our prayer life. When things
are going the way we want them
to go and there are no serious
problems to deal with, it’s easy
to “let up” on the time we spend
with God in prayer.
This life style Is not
uncommon. In fact, the Psalmist
came to the same conclusion
when he wrote, “But as for me,
it is good to be near God.”
We have all met people in life
that keep everyone at a distance.
Whether they don’t want to know
us or they don’t want us to know
them may never be clear. But we
feel the separation and there
is not much, if anything, we
can do about it. So, we move
on.
But with God it is different.
We can get as close to Him as
we desire. In fact, we all know
that drawing close to God is
something that He wants us to
do. His gracious invitation “to
come to me” is always
available.
Because life is like an
“incline” if we are not walking
upward toward Him we are
slipping downward away from
Him. My mother once said to
me, “Larry, if you are not as
close to God as you once were,
you are the one who has
moved.” And she added,
“Draw close to Him and He
will get closer to you.”
God not only waits for us to
come to Him,but seeks us.
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
3 cups all-purpose flour
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease an 8x8-inch square pan and an 8-inch round pan.
Beat white sugar and 1 cup butter together in a bowl with an electric mixer until creamy
and smooth. Mix eggs, 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, and almond extract into creamed
butter mixture. Stir baking powder and baking soda into butter mixture until just combined.
Stir 1 cup flour into butter mixture until just combined. Add 2/3 cup milk into butter-flour
mixture; mix well. Continue adding 1 cup flour and 2/3 cup milk, alternating until all the
flour and milk are used and batter is smooth. Pour batter into the 2 prepared pans.
Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted in the center of each cake comes out
clean, 30 to 40 minutes. Cool cakes completely before removing from pans, at least 2
hours.
Beat confectioners' sugar, 1 cup butter, and 2 teaspoons vanilla extract together in a bowl
with an electric mixer until icing is fluffy and smooth.
Remove cakes from pans and slice round cake in half. Lay the square cake on a work
surface so it resembles a diamond-shape. Lay 1 round cake half on the top left side of the
'diamond' cake. Lay the second round cake half on the top right side of the 'diamond'
cake, creating a 'heart-shaped' cake on top. Spread icing over the assembled cake.

20 Years Ago in THE BANNER!
A man proudly showed his
neighbor his pet. "He's different,"he
said. "He's part collie
and part bull, and he cost a
thousand dollars."
"Which part is bull?" asked
the neighbor.
"The part about the thousand
dollars," he answered.
It seems that there's part bull
in much of our talk. And the
words that show what you are,
are the words you speak when
your guard is down. For these
words you'll be judged.
Once the soiling, sarcastic,
scathing word is spoken, nothing
will bring it back. It follows a
course of damage and despair.
So watch your words!·
