YUGOSLAVIA—Announces capture of Split, capital<br />

of Dalmatia and Adriatic port, to Partisan forces.<br />

BURMA—In NCAC area, 713th Regt of Ch<br />

38th Div encounters patrols from enemy’s OPL<br />

along Taping R near Bhamo but routs them in<br />

order to reach the river at Myothit. 112th and 114th<br />

Regts are to make wide enveloping maneuver in<br />

order to turn the enemy line.<br />

LEYTE—U.S. Sixth <strong>Army</strong>: In X Corps area,<br />

1st Bn of 34th Inf, 24th Div, followed by 2d Bn,<br />

drives through Alangalang to Mainit R and dislodges<br />

enemy from steel bridges spanning it. 3d Bn<br />

makes contacts with 79th Inf S of Santa Fe. 1st Bn,<br />

79th Inf, blocks road N of Binahaan R near Macalpe;<br />

2d establishes perimeter at Tingib. 1st Cav Div regroups:<br />

1st Sq of 12th Cav moves to Castilla to<br />

relieve 24th Div of responsibility for rear areas so<br />

that latter may drive on Jaro; 2d Cav Brig is ordered<br />

to advance on Carigara; 2d Sq of 8th Cav is to<br />

establish base at San Miguel, secure Cavite, and<br />

patrol as far N and NW as Barugo road, maintaining<br />

contact with 1st Sq, 7th Cav; 1st Sq of 7th Cav,<br />

while holding positions at Santa Cruz and Babatngon,<br />

is to concentrate in Barugo–Carigara area<br />

and patrol S and SE. Tr C of 7th Cav moves by<br />

water from Babatngon to Barugo and overland to<br />

Carigara, where prolonged fire fight ensues; withdraws<br />

to Barugo late in afternoon. In XXIV Corps<br />

area, 2d Bn of 382d Inf, 96th Div, finishes clearing<br />

Tabontabon and continues toward Kiling. 381st Inf<br />

begins attack on E slopes of Catmon Hill at noon.<br />

2d Bn gets almost to Labir Hill, but 1st receives such<br />

accurate fire at foot of the hill that it pulls back to<br />

vicinity of line of departure. 2d Bn of 32d Inf, 7th<br />

Div, is alerted for drive on Abuyog on 29th. 3d Bn<br />

is ordered to Guinarona. 17th Inf makes slow<br />

progress toward Dagami. 2d Bn, in the lead, suffers<br />

heavy casualties.<br />

29 October<br />

WESTERN EUROPE—21 <strong>Army</strong> Group: In Cdn<br />

First <strong>Army</strong> area, 2 Corps is rapidly clearing S<br />

Beveland and completing reduction of Breskens<br />

Pocket. 52d Div and Cdn 2d Div establish contact<br />

on S Beveland and 52d Div takes Goes. Br 1 Corps,<br />

upon reaching Bergen-op–Zoom–Tilburg road, is directed<br />

northward to secure crossings of Mark R.<br />

Breda falls to Pol 1st Armd Div.<br />

In Br Second <strong>Army</strong>’s 8 Corps area, Germans attack<br />

in force from Meijel toward Liesel and Asten,<br />

taking Liesel from CCB, U.S. 7th Armd Div, and<br />

pushing CCR units back about halfway up road<br />

toward Asten. During night, 15th Div (which has<br />

completed its mission with 12 Corps) and a tank<br />

[ 29 OCTOBER 1944 ]<br />

brig are sent to reinforce corps. 75th Div relieves<br />

CCB near Liesel and CCR SE of Asten. U.S. 7th<br />

Armd Div, upon relief, concentrates about Nederweert<br />

and Weert.<br />

12th <strong>Army</strong> Group: In U.S. Third <strong>Army</strong>’s XX<br />

Corps area, 3 cos of 357th Inf, 90th Div, omitting<br />

arty preparation, attack from factory area at Maizières-lès-Metz<br />

into section S of Hôtel de Ville; 2 others<br />

attack from N. Most of the town is cleared by<br />

dark.<br />

6th <strong>Army</strong> Group: In U.S. Seventh <strong>Army</strong>’s VI<br />

Corps area, 45th Div moves into Bru and Jeanménil,<br />

which enemy has successfully defended for<br />

the past month, without opposition. Drive on Raonl’Etape<br />

continues to right. 3d Div improves positions<br />

near St Dié. In 36th Div zone, 442d Inf<br />

pushes closer to isolated 1st Bn of 141st Inf in<br />

Forêt Domaniale de Champ.<br />

ITALY—AAI: In U.S. Fifth <strong>Army</strong> area, elements<br />

of GCB, S African 6th Armd Div, on left<br />

flank of div, take Palazzo, W of Highway 64.<br />

In Br Eighth <strong>Army</strong>’s 5 Corps area, enemy garrison<br />

at Meldola is threatened with encirclement<br />

as Ind 10th Div begins attacks from bridgeheads<br />

and S of the town. 4th Div prepares for another<br />

attack across the river since flood waters are subsiding.<br />

INDIA-BURMA—On Salween front, Gen Wei Lihuang’s<br />

Chinese Expeditionary Force, closely supported<br />

by U.S. Fourteenth Air Force, renews offensive,<br />

attacking toward Lung-ling with Ch 200th Div<br />

in the lead. Japanese have been thinning out.<br />

In NCAC area, Br 36th Div, having paused<br />

briefly at Mawpin, resumes southward drive down<br />

RR corridor.<br />

LEYTE—Since 77th Div will apparently not be<br />

needed on Leyte, Gen MacArthur transfers it from<br />

control of Gen Krueger to that of Adm Nimitz.<br />

U.S. Sixth <strong>Army</strong>: In X Corps area, 3d Bn of 34th<br />

Inf, 24th Div, takes the lead in drive to Jaro, reaching<br />

the town at 1700 after having cleared opposition<br />

en route to Galotan. 19th Inf defends S flank<br />

of div; Co K establishes roadblock at Ypad. 2d Cav<br />

Brig, 1st Cav Div, continues assembling in Barugo<br />

area, 1st Sq joining Tr C there. In XXIV Corps area,<br />

2d Bn of 381st Inf, 96th Div, takes Labir and Catmon<br />

Hills with ease. 1st Bn jumps off at noon and<br />

makes contact with 2d Bn. 1st Bn, 383d Inf, is relieved<br />

on Labiranan Head and passes to Sixth <strong>Army</strong><br />

reserve. Withdrawing depleted 2d Bn to reserve,<br />

17th Inf of 7th Div continues attack toward Dagami<br />

with 1st and 3d Bns and breaks into S part of<br />

town. From Burauen, 2d Bn of 32d Inf moves without<br />

incident along Highway 1 to Abuyog.<br />

7th Cav Rcn Tr, preceding it, pushes on toward<br />

Baybay.
