Brig under its command, attacks across the Senio,<br />

night 9–10, to divert enemy from main action, establishing<br />

bridgehead in Cuffiana area by dawn. 13<br />

Corps holds defensive positions on left flank of<br />

army.<br />

CBI—Gen Wedemeyer meets with officers of<br />

Tenth Air Force and India–Burma Theater to discuss<br />

projected move of Tenth Air Force to China.<br />

LUZON—In U.S. Sixth <strong>Army</strong>’s Legaspi sector,<br />

RCT 158 overcomes resistance near Daraga and<br />

secures junction of Highways 1 and 160. Widespread<br />

patrolling of Sorsogon Province indicates<br />

that Japanese are now concealed in hills around San<br />

Francisco, about 5 miles NE of Bulan. In I Corps<br />

area, 37th and 33d Divs prepare for strong effort<br />

against Baguio, 148th Inf of 37th Div moving from<br />

Manila to Naguilian area. Cos E and F, 129th Inf,<br />

try in vain to reach isolated Co G on Naguilian–<br />

Baguio road. 3d Bn moves to base of mountain mass<br />

called Three Peaks in preparation for attack on<br />

Monglo. 130th Inf, 33d Div, relieves elements of<br />

123d Inf at Galiano. 32d Div assault toward Salacsac<br />

Pass, on Villa Verde Trail, gains some ground.<br />

Elements of 27th Inf, 25th Div, finish clearing spur<br />

W of Mt Myoko, from which Japanese have been<br />

barring forward movement. In XI Corps area, air<br />

and arty continue to neutralize Mt Mataba. Elements<br />

of 38th Div that have been pushing along<br />

Sacobia R toward Mt Pinatubo have gained several<br />

thousand yards during last few days. In XIV Corps<br />

area, some elements of 1st Cav and 11th A/B Divs<br />

speed E toward the coast, establishing contact at<br />

Lucban, and others are maintaining pressure on Mt<br />

Malepunyo.<br />

S PHILIPPINES—In U.S. Eighth <strong>Army</strong> area,<br />

Americal Div gets into position on Cebu to place<br />

enfilade fire on enemy positions in mountainous interior.<br />

RCT 164 arrives at Cebu City at night. On<br />

Negros, 40th Div begins concerted effort to eliminate<br />

enemy in mountains, employing 503d Para Inf<br />

on left, 185th Inf in center, and 160th Inf on right.<br />

503d, driving SE from Napilas area toward Manzanares,<br />

is soon halted by enemy fire. 185th drives<br />

E toward Lantawan, gaining 6,000 yards and clearing<br />

hill position. 160th, moving NE toward Hill<br />

3155 later called Dolan Hill, reaches its base. 2d<br />

Bn of 186th Inf, 41st Div, begins shore-to-shore operations<br />

to clear Calamian Is., N of Palawan, with<br />

unopposed landing on Busuanga I. In Sulu Archipelago,<br />

RCT 163 (less 2d Bn), 41st Div, makes unopposed<br />

landing on Jolo and begins clearing it. 2<br />

weeks of aerial bombardment and preliminary naval<br />

bombardment by Seventh Fleet precede landing.<br />

RYUKYU Is.—In U.S. Tenth <strong>Army</strong>’s III Amphib<br />

Corps area, 29th Marines of 6th Mar Div continues<br />

to explore Motobu Peninsula in effort to develop<br />

enemy positions there. In XXIV Corps area,<br />

battle for Kakazu Ridge, key feature in enemy’s<br />

Shuri defense system, starts as 2 bns of 383d Inf,<br />

96th Div, storm up the ridge in surprise attack beginning<br />

before dawn. Under enemy fire and frequent<br />

counterattacks, the regt withdraws. Both sides<br />

suffer heavy casualties. 184th Inf, 7th Div, captures<br />

Tomb Hill with assistance of massed fire. 32d Inf<br />

continues to advance along E coast. 27th Div<br />

( — RCT 105) lands to reinforce corps.<br />

WESTERN EUROPE—21 <strong>Army</strong> Group: In Cdn<br />

First <strong>Army</strong>’s Cdn 2 Corps area, Cdn 3d Div takes<br />

Deventer and continues northward toward Leeuwarden.<br />

Cdn 2d Div drives on Groningen against<br />

scattered resistance. Cdn 4th Armd Div pushes beyond<br />

Soegel toward Oldenburg.<br />

Br Second <strong>Army</strong>’s 30 Corps continues NE toward<br />

Bremen. In 12 Corps area, 53d Div, from the Hoya<br />

bridgehead across the Weser, attacks NE toward<br />

Soltau. 8 Corps continues toward Celle sector of<br />

the Aller R.<br />

12th <strong>Army</strong> Group: In U.S. Ninth <strong>Army</strong>’s XIII<br />

Corps area, 84th Div attacks and takes Hannover.<br />

5th Armd Div, spearheading drive toward final<br />

objective, the Elbe, reaches and crosses Oker R:<br />

CCR captures bridge in Ahnsen area; CCA crosses<br />

the Oker on right flank of corps and reaches Meine,<br />

N of Braunschweig. 102d Div continues to mop up<br />

rear area. In XIX Corps area, 2d Armd Div renews<br />

eastward drive: CCA advances in 3 columns to Hallendorf<br />

area, SW of Braunschweig; CCB columns,<br />

to right, speed to the Oker at Schladen, where bridge<br />

is secured, and Gross Dohren, to SW. 30th Div<br />

shuttles E on left flank of corps from Hameln area,<br />

with RCT 117 on left and RCT 120 on right, and<br />

reaches Fuhse Canal, W of Braunschweig. 83d Div,<br />

with 329th Inf on left and 330th on right, drives E<br />

on right flank of corps from Westfeld–Seesen<br />

sector, left flank elements taking several towns in<br />

region N of Harz Mountains and right flank units<br />

fighting slowly forward through Harz Mountains.<br />

In XVI Corps area, 75th Div progresses steadily S<br />

toward Witten sector of the Ruhr against slackening<br />

resistance, forward elements taking Dueren and Stockum;<br />

establishes contact with TF Twaddle E<br />

of Brambauer. 35th Div screens right flank of 75th<br />

Div on left and clears Gelsenkirchen and suburbs<br />

on right. 79th Div advances E along the Ruhr<br />

against scattered resistance (313th Inf on left and
