MINDANAO—In X Corps area, 2d Bn of 19th<br />

Inf, 24th Div, joins 3d Bn in drive toward Mandog.<br />

OKINAWA—In U.S. Tenth <strong>Army</strong>’s III Amphib<br />

Corps area, 6th Mar Div, continuing E along heights<br />

N of the Kokuba, runs into strong rear-guard opposition<br />

in vicinity of Hill 46. Enemy positions are<br />

softened by direct tank fire and arty bombardment.<br />

1st Marines, 1st Mar Div, is withdrawn as reserve<br />

and will mop up in Shuri sector. In XXIV Corps<br />

area, 77th Div, after taking 100 Meter Hill, pushes<br />

into ruins of Shuri, from which Japanese have withdrawn<br />

in an orderly fashion, and is pinched out by<br />

friendly forces on flanks. 96th Div finishes clearing<br />

its zone and establishes contact with 1st Mar Div.<br />

Continuing to press W, 7th Div overcomes resistance<br />

on hills near Chan, completing its current mission.<br />

1 June<br />

SEAC—Adm Mountbatten informs Chiefs of<br />

Staff that he has decided to postpone D Day for ZIP-<br />

PER from late August to 9 September.<br />

LUZON—In U.S. Sixth <strong>Army</strong>’s I Corps area,<br />

129th Inf of 37th Div continues rapidly northward<br />

against scattered resistance.<br />

MINDANAO—In U.S. Eighth <strong>Army</strong>’s X Corps<br />

area, 19th Inf of 24th Div continues westward during<br />

next few days, getting into position for assault<br />

on Mandog.<br />

OKINAWA—Since enemy has made good his escape<br />

from Shuri, U.S. Tenth <strong>Army</strong> begins southward<br />

pursuit, abandoning envelopment maneuvers<br />

aimed at splitting Japanese forces on Okinawa. In<br />

III Amphib Corps area, after clearing Hill 46, 6th<br />

Mar Div seizes Shichina and northern branch of the<br />

Kokuba. To E, 5th Marines, 1st Mar Div, are<br />

patrolling across the Kokuba. At night, 6th Mar Div<br />

Rcn Co crosses Kokuba estuary to reconnoiter in<br />

preparation for amphibious operations against<br />

Oroku Peninsula. XXIV Corps, upon regrouping,<br />

pursues enemy southward. 96th Div, on right flank,<br />

relieves 32d Inf of 7th Div and begins to clear opposition<br />

near Chan. 77th Div covers rear of 96th<br />

Div and mops up in Shuri area. 7th Div, shifting E,<br />

pushes southward on E flank of corps with 17th Inf<br />

on right and 184th on left, clearing 2 hills of rearguard<br />

opposition.<br />

2 June<br />

LUZON—In U.S. Sixth <strong>Army</strong>’s XI Corps area,<br />

43d Div completes mop up of Ipo area.<br />

OKINAWA—In U.S. Tenth <strong>Army</strong>’s III Amphib<br />

Corps area, 7th Marines of 1st Mar Div takes up<br />

positions along the Kokuba, releasing 6th Mar Div,<br />

which is to conduct amphibious operation against<br />

Oroku Peninsula. In XXIV Corps area, 96th Div,<br />

after cleaning out Chan area, speeds southward in<br />

pursuit of enemy for next few days, as does 7th<br />

Div to E.<br />

3 June<br />

LUZON—In U.S. Sixth <strong>Army</strong>’s I Corps area,<br />

forward elements of 129th Inf, 37th Div, reach positions<br />

9,500 yards N of Santa Fe.<br />

OKINAWA—In U.S. Tenth <strong>Army</strong>’s III Amphib<br />

Corps area, 1st Mar Div thrusts S across the Kokuba,<br />

7th Marines moving forward to seal off Oroku<br />

Peninsula and 5th Marines driving southward to<br />

vicinity of Gisushi. In XXIV Corps area, 96th and<br />

7th Divs continue quickly southward. 305th Inf,<br />

77th Div, plugs gap developing between the corps.<br />

Patrol of 184th Inf, 7th Div, reaches SE coast of<br />

Okinawa near Hyakuna, cutting off Chinen Peninsula;<br />

32d Inf starts reconnoitering the peninsula.<br />

4 June<br />

LUZON—In U.S. Sixth <strong>Army</strong>’s I Corps area,<br />

129th Inf of 37th Div patrols to Aritao.<br />

OKINAWA—In U.S. Tenth <strong>Army</strong> area, intercorps<br />

boundary is shifted W to place Yaeju-Dake<br />

Escarpment within XXIV Corps zone. In III Amphib<br />

Corps area, after preparatory bombardment,<br />

6th Mar Div lands 4th Marines, followed by 29th<br />

Marines, on N Oroku Peninsula. Pushing inland,<br />

marines clear about half of Naha airfield. 6th Rcn<br />

Co seizes Ono-Yama I. in Naha Inlet with ease,<br />

killing the few Japanese there. 7th Marines, 1st Mar<br />

Div, advances farther SW along base of Oroku<br />

Peninsula. 1st Marines drives S through 5th Marines.<br />

XXIV Corps, advancing rapidly against scattered<br />

resistance and swerving SW because of boundary<br />

change, reaches line Iwa–Minatoga. In coastal<br />

sector, 7th Div wades across Minatoga R.<br />

5 June<br />

LUZON—In U.S. Sixth <strong>Army</strong>’s I Corps area,<br />

1st Bn of 129th Inf, 37th Div, seizes Aritao during<br />

morning and presses on; 145th Inf is in Aritao area.<br />

OKINAWA—In U.S. Tenth <strong>Army</strong> area, rains end<br />

but armor is still mired down and supply lines are<br />

dangerously overextended. In III Amphib Corps<br />

area, Japanese on Oroku Peninsula put up determined<br />

opposition that limits gains, but 6th Mar<br />

Div seizes most of Naha airfield. 7th Marines, 1st<br />

Mar Div, continues SW to seal off the peninsula<br />

while 1st Marines speeds S to Iwa area. XXIV
