JAPAN—Japanese Government offers to surrender<br />

“without prejudice to the Emperor’s position.”<br />

U.S.—Replies to Japanese surrender offer.<br />

12 August<br />

U.S.—War Department suspends projected operations<br />

against Fort Bayard since end of hostilities<br />

is imminent.<br />

KOREA—Soviet troops move into Korea.<br />

13 August<br />

U.S.—Surrender documents, approved by<br />

President Truman, are sent to Gen MacArthur.<br />

14 August<br />

JAPAN—Accepts Allied unconditional surrender<br />

terms. 11th A/B Div moves by air from the Philipines<br />

to Okinawa en route to Japan.<br />

PACIFIC—Gen MacArthur receives notice that<br />

he is Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers.<br />

All offensive action against Japan comes to an end.<br />

19 August<br />

LUZON—Japanese delegation arrives in Manila<br />

for conference on formal surrender arrangements.<br />

20 August<br />

LUZON—The Japanese delegation leaves Manila<br />

for Tokyo with instructions about the occupation<br />

of Japan and signing of final peace terms.<br />

28 August<br />

JAPAN—Occupation of Japan, delayed 48 hours<br />

by typhoon, begins as advance party arrives there.<br />

30 August<br />

JAPAN—Occupation of Japan in force is begun<br />

by U.S. forces. 11th A/B Div is flown to Atsugi<br />

Airfield, and 4th Marines, 6th Mar Div, lands at<br />

Yokosuka Naval Base.<br />

HONG KONG—Br naval force reoccupies that<br />

British colony.<br />

2 September<br />

INTERNATIONAL AGREEMENTS—Hostilities with<br />

Japan officially end with signing of instrument of<br />

surrender aboard the <strong>US</strong>S Missouri in Tokyo Bay.<br />

U.S. <strong>Army</strong> battle casualties during World War II<br />

total 936,259, or about 9 percent of the 10,420,000<br />

military personnel who served in the U.S. <strong>Army</strong> and<br />

<strong>Army</strong> Air Forces.<br />

(On 31 December 1946, hostilities are declared<br />

terminated by Presidential proclamation.)
