ITALY—15th <strong>Army</strong> Group: In U.S. Fifth <strong>Army</strong><br />

area, 92d Div enters Massa, from which enemy has<br />

withdrawn.<br />

In Br Eighth <strong>Army</strong>’s Pol 2 Corps area, 3d Carpathian<br />

Div presses forward from the Senio toward<br />

the Santerno to left of 5 Corps, taking Solarolo and<br />

reaching Lugo Canal. In 5 Corps area, NZ 2d and<br />

Ind 8th Divs attack toward the Santerno. 78th Div<br />

force crosses the Senio between the two at Cotignola.<br />

56th Div begins overland and amphibious operations<br />

toward Bastia in flooded coastal area. 167th<br />

Brig advances along the Reno while 169th, reinf by<br />

40th (Royal Marine) Cdo, moves by water toward<br />

Menate, threatening enemy from rear.<br />

BURMA—In Br Fourteenth <strong>Army</strong>’s 4 Corps<br />

area, columns of Ind 17th Div and 255th Tank Brig<br />

converge on Pyawbwe and with air assistance capture<br />

this key point on Mandalay–Rangoon railway.<br />

LUZON—In U.S. Sixth <strong>Army</strong> area, RCT 158,<br />

after securing Legaspi area, begins rcn of islands<br />

in Albay Gulf and prepares to send elements to<br />

help AT Co in San Francisco area. In I Corps’<br />

Baguio area, Sablan–Salat region is cleared as Cos<br />

E and F of 129th Inf, 37th Div, establish contact<br />

with Co G in advanced position. 3d Bn begins assault<br />

up Three Peaks and gets to within 100 yards<br />

of top. 27th Inf, 25th Div, gives 1st Bn task of continuing<br />

offensive for Mt Myoko and withdraws 3d<br />

Bn into reserve. Salacsac Pass No. 2 falls to 128th<br />

Inf of 32d Div, concluding prolonged and costly<br />

battle for this gateway to Cagayan Valley. In XI<br />

Corps area, 63d Inf of 6th Div, having suspended<br />

ground attacks on Mt Mataba for several days<br />

while enemy positions there were being neutralized,<br />

renews assault and gets elements to the summit, but<br />

Japanese continue to defend positions on this feature<br />

for the next week. XIV Corps columns drive to<br />

coast at Lamon Bay, sealing off Japanese forces in<br />

the Bicols. Elements of 1st Cav Div take Mauban<br />

while units of 11th A /B Div seize Atimonan.<br />

S PHILIPPINES—In U.S. Eighth <strong>Army</strong> area,<br />

Gen Suzuki is lost at sea while withdrawing from<br />

Cebu toward Mindanao. Hill 26 on Cebu falls to<br />

elements of 132d Inf. Co E, 182d, rejoins regiment<br />

after clearing Hill 20 in conjunction with guerrilla<br />

forces. On Negros, 160th Inf is pinned down by<br />

heavy fire at foot of Dolan Hill and for next few<br />

days reconnoiters extensively. In preparation for<br />

[ 11 APRIL 1945 ]<br />

amphibious assault on Bohol, advance party of 3d<br />

Bn, 164th Inf, lands at Tagbilaran to secure guides.<br />

RYUKYU Is.—3d Bn of 105th Inf, 27th Div,<br />

under command of Eastern Islands Attack and<br />

Fire Support Group (TG 51.19), lands on Tsugen<br />

Shima after preparatory aerial and naval gunfire<br />

bombardment and begins search for isolated enemy<br />

groups.<br />

In U.S. Tenth <strong>Army</strong>’s III Amphib Corps area on<br />

Okinawa, 29th Marines of 6th Mar Div is enveloping<br />

Japanese positions on Yae-Take hill mass,<br />

Motobu Peninsula. Some elements reach Toguchi,<br />

on coast NW of Yae-Take, and others are at Itomi,<br />

NE of Yae-Take. In XXIV Corps area, 96th Div,<br />

with unusually heavy fire support, attacks with 2<br />

regts, 383d and 381st, toward Kakazu Ridge; gains<br />

positions on it in costly fighting but is unable to<br />

drive enemy off. 7th Div makes limited progress in<br />

region to E, 184th Inf consolidating and 32d pressing<br />

toward Ouki.<br />

11 April<br />

WESTERN EUROPE—21 <strong>Army</strong> Group: In Cdn<br />

First <strong>Army</strong>’s Cdn 2 Corps area, Cdn 1st Div attacks<br />

W across Ijssel R toward Apeldoorn while<br />

rest of corps continues northward on broad front.<br />

Pol 1st Armd Div, now operating to right of Cdn<br />

2d Div, employs motorized elements in pursuit of<br />

enemy.<br />

In Br Second <strong>Army</strong> area, 30 Corps makes steady<br />

progress toward Bremen. In 12 Corps area, some<br />

53d Div elements cross Leine R at Westen but<br />

others are held up in Rethem area. 8 Corps gets<br />

forward elements to Aller R line near Celle.<br />

12th <strong>Army</strong> Group: In U.S. Ninth <strong>Army</strong>’s XIII<br />

Corps area, 5th Armd Div continues toward the<br />

Elbe: CCR columns reach Ohrdorf, SE of Wittingen,<br />

and Rohrberg; CCA, to right, reaches Poritz,<br />

W of Bismark. 84th Div starts toward the Elbe in<br />

left sector of corps zone, leaving 335th Inf in Hannover<br />

as corps reserve. In right sector of corps, forward<br />

elements of 102d Div reach the Leine near Pattensen,<br />

S of Hannover. In XIX Corps area, advance<br />

elements of CCB, 2d Armd Div, in record<br />

drive of 57 miles, reach the Elbe S of Magdeburg.<br />

CCA gets columns to Wolfenbuettel, Schoppenstedt,<br />

and Immendorf area. At 0200, 30th Div begins assault<br />

across Fuhse Canal W of Braunschweig with<br />

RCT’s 117 and 120. RCT 117 seizes airfield SW of<br />

Braunschweig and enters W part of city. RCT 120<br />

takes rail bridge over the Oker SE of the city and<br />

blocks eastern exits; cavalry units, driving through<br />

5th Armd Div zone, block N and NE exits. 329th<br />

Inf, 83d Div, clears Halberstadt and Groeningen;<br />

330th and reformed TF Biddle are clearing large<br />

wooded area to right. In XVI Corps area, 75th Div,<br />

employing 289th, 290th, 291st, and 320th Regts during<br />

course of the day, reaches the Ruhr at Witten
