progress on right (E) flank. On left flank, 6th Armd<br />

Div furnishes fire support for neighboring VIII Corps<br />

units and outposts N sector of line reached by 4th<br />

Armd Div. Elements of 35th Div take Villers-la-<br />

Bonne-Eau and high ground NW. Betlange falls to<br />

6th Cav Sq and Harlange to 28th Cav Sq. One 90th<br />

Div regt advances from Berle to heights overlooking<br />

Doncols; another fights indecisively for Trentelhof<br />

strongpoint. Elements of 26th Div reach high ground<br />

SW of Winseler.<br />

6th <strong>Army</strong> Group: In U.S. Seventh <strong>Army</strong>’s VI<br />

Corps area, elements of 45th Div enter Althorn,<br />

on left flank of Bitche salient, but are unable to<br />

clear it. Otherwise, the salient is unchanged despite<br />

continued fighting about its perimeter. On 79th<br />

Div’s N flank, indecisive fighting occurs at Hatten;<br />

bn of 315th Inf is committed there and 2d Bn, 242d<br />

Inf, recalled; another bn of 315th assembles in Rittershoffen.<br />

To S, enemy maintains Gambsheim<br />

bridgehead. Elements of CCB, 12th Armd Div, are<br />

virtually surrounded at Herrlisheim, but tanks sever<br />

enemy lines in order to reinforce infantry within<br />

the town.<br />

ITALY—15th <strong>Army</strong> Group: In U.S. Fifth <strong>Army</strong>’s<br />

IV Corps area, 92d Div takes responsibility for<br />

Serchio Valley sector. Ind 8th Div, less 17th Brig, is<br />

placed in army reserve.<br />

BURMA—In NCAC area, 114th Regt of Ch 38th<br />

Div, which is to move around S end of Shweli Valley<br />

and cut Namhkam–Namhpakka trail, crosses the<br />

Shweli. U.S. 124th Cav, after delay at the Shweli because<br />

of swollen waters, is assembled E of the river.<br />

In Br Fourteenth <strong>Army</strong>’s 33 Corps area, Shwebo<br />

falls under combined attacks of Br 2d and Ind 19th<br />

Divs. Ind 20th Div takes Budalin after prolonged<br />

struggle. In 4 Corps area, E African 28th Brig and<br />

Lushai Brig are assisted by heavy air strike in Gangaw<br />

area, where enemy is firmly entrenched.<br />

CHINA—In effort to reopen the Canton–Hengyang<br />

stretch of the Canton–Hankow RR, Japanese<br />

move forward as quietly as possible about this time.<br />

LUZON—In U.S. Sixth <strong>Army</strong> area, army reserve<br />

begins landing. In XIV Corps area, 185th Inf of<br />

40th Div takes Labrador while 160th pushes along<br />

Highway 13 toward Aguilar, reaching Umanday<br />

area. Because of gap developing between the two<br />

regts, 108th Inf (less 3d Bn) is committed in Polong<br />

area. 148th Inf, 37th Div, speeds inland to San<br />

Carlos; elements continue to <strong>Army</strong> Beachhead Line.<br />

One 129th Inf column moves without opposition to<br />

Malisiqui, within 2 1/2 miles of <strong>Army</strong> Beachhead<br />

Line, while another reaches <strong>Army</strong> Beachhead Line<br />

at Dumpay and maintains contact with 148th Inf.<br />

In I Corps area, 6th Div drives S and SE to<br />

Mapandan and vicinity of Santa Barbara. 43d Div’s<br />

103d Inf takes San Jacinto without opposition and<br />

pushes on toward Manoag and Hill 200; 169th and<br />

172d Regts run into organized defense positions<br />

on hills confronting them; 169th takes Hill 470<br />

and drives on Hill 351 and 318; 172d Inf clears<br />

Hill 385 and moves slowly toward Hill 351.<br />

11 January<br />

WESTERN EUROPE—21 <strong>Army</strong> Group: In Br<br />

Second <strong>Army</strong>’s 30 Corps area, patrols of 6th A/B<br />

Div reach St Hubert and make contact with U.S.<br />

VIII Corps.<br />

In U.S. Ninth <strong>Army</strong>’s XIX Corps area, 78th Div<br />

finishes clearing hill positions overlooking Kall R.<br />

In U.S. First <strong>Army</strong>’s VII Corps area, Laroche, in<br />

84th Div sector, is cleared of enemy; 4th Cav Gp<br />

patrol covers portion E of the Ourthe R. 83d Div<br />

secures road junction on Bihain–Lomre road and<br />

attacks Petite Langlir and Langlir. In XVIII Corps<br />

(A/B) area, 75th Div takes up positions along Salm<br />

R that were held by 82d A/B Div. 106th Div assumes<br />

control of right of 30th Div zone.<br />

12th <strong>Army</strong> Group: In U.S. Third <strong>Army</strong>’s VIII<br />

Corps area, 87th Div’s 347th Inf finishes clearing<br />

Haies-de-Tillet woods and occupies Bonnerue, Pironpre,<br />

Vesqueville, and St Hubert, from which<br />

enemy has withdrawn. Germans are also withdrawing<br />

from 17th A/B Div zone in vicinity of Heropont,<br />

Flamierge, Mande St Etienne, and Flamizoulle.<br />

In III Corps area, Germans are retiring from<br />

pocket SE of Bastogne. Elements of all divs of corps<br />

are converging on Bras. 6th Armd Div takes over<br />

sector E of Bastogne formerly held by 4th Armd Div<br />

(VIII Corps); elements attack toward Bras, clearing<br />

woods near Wardin. 35th Div gains additional<br />

high ground in Lutrebois–Lutremange area. TF Fickett<br />

clears Wantrange and attacks Tarchamps, then<br />

moves into zone of TF Scott (mainly 26th Div units)<br />

as it advances on Sonlez. TF Fickett reaches Sonlez<br />

by midnight and makes contact with 80th Div. Elements<br />

of TF Scott clear forest E of Harlange then, in<br />

conjunction with TF Fickett, secure heights SW of<br />

Sonlez. 90th Div overcomes resistance around Trentelhof,<br />

cuts Bastogne–Wiltz road at Doncols, and<br />

advances on Sonlez. 26th Div improves positions on<br />

right flank of corps. In XII Corps area, 80th Div takes<br />

Bockholz-sur-Sure and high ground S of Burden. 2d<br />

Cav Gp clears Machtum, enemy’s last position W of<br />

the Moselle.<br />

6th <strong>Army</strong> Group: In U.S. Seventh <strong>Army</strong>’s VI<br />

Corps area, 45th Div clears Althorn, at W of Bitche<br />

salient, but falls back under enemy pressure in<br />

Wildenguth–Saegmuhl–Reipertsweiler region;
