7th Armd Div overcomes house-to-house opposition<br />

in Born. 508th Para RCT takes over Deidenberg–Eibertingen<br />

area. In V Corps area, 1st Div<br />

meets stiff opposition as it attempts to improve<br />

positions NE of Schoppen; establishes outposts and<br />

sends patrols through Bambusch woods in region S<br />

of Schoppen.<br />

In U.S. Third <strong>Army</strong>’s VIII Corps area, shift in<br />

corps boundaries puts Bois de Rouvroy, NE of Buret,<br />

within corps zone and transfers Bastogne to juris-diction<br />

of III Corps. New boundaries run on the<br />

N through Laroche and Ourthe to Thommen and<br />

on the S through Neufchâteau, Bastogne, and Holdingen<br />

to Thommen. Elements of CCA, 11th Armd<br />

Div, reach Buret. 17th A/B Div continues advance<br />

NE of Tavigny. III Corps advance to NE gains<br />

momentum. 6th Armd Div clears Crendal, Troine,<br />

Baraques de Troine, Lullange, Hoffelt, and Hachiville.<br />

90th Div’s 358th Inf takes Derenbach, Hill<br />

480, and Boevange-les-Clervaux; 359th secures Hill<br />

520, Hamiville, and Wincrange. Some 26th Div<br />

units across Wiltz R in vicinity of Winseler clear<br />

Noertrange and Bruhl; others, in conjunction with<br />

6th Cav Gp, enter Wiltz and mop up pockets of<br />

resistance. In XII Corps area, 4th Div captures Longsdorf<br />

but is unable to take Fuhren. 5th secures Landscheid<br />

and Lipperscheid. Renewing offensive, 80th<br />

Div’s 318th Inf takes Bourscheid and Welscheid and<br />

woods between these and the Sauer; 317th is unable<br />

to get units across river to N of Bourscheid but takes<br />

Kehmen. In XX Corps area, 94th Div<br />

halts attack on Orscholz because of heavy casualties<br />

to 1st Bn, 301st Inf; 302d Inf holds Tettingen and<br />

Nennig against strong counterattack.<br />

6th <strong>Army</strong> Group: In U.S. Seventh <strong>Army</strong>’s XV<br />

Corps area, CCB of 10th Armd Div closes in area<br />

NE of Fenétrange. In VI Corps area, main body of<br />

corps completes withdrawal to new MLR, along line<br />

Althorn–Rothbach–Niedermodern–Haguenau–Bischwiller.<br />

79th Div’s OPL in Camp d’Oberhoffen area<br />

is pushed back by enemy.<br />

EASTERN EUROPE—Fanning out from Tilsit, NE<br />

East Prussia, Third White Russian Front reaches<br />

Kurisch Sound on right and takes Gumbinnen on<br />

left; Second White Russian Front presses steadily<br />

N toward East Prussia on wide front and takes East<br />

Prussian town of Tannenberg. First White Russian<br />

and First Ukrainian Fronts continue W in Poland;<br />

latter crosses into Silesia, Germany, in region W of<br />

Czestochowa and takes several Silesian towns.<br />

BURMA—In ALFSEA’s 15 Corps area, brig of<br />

Ind 26th Div, after co-ordinated air and naval bombardment,<br />

lands on N coast of Ramree I. and captures<br />

Kyaukpyu. Ind 25th Div now holds all of<br />

Myebon Peninsula.<br />

In NCAC area, U.S. 5332d Brig establishes perimeter<br />

defenses along W side of Burma Road but does<br />

not block the road; makes contact with 114th Regt<br />

of Ch 38th Div, which is to block road to N.<br />

FORMOSA-RYUKY<strong>US</strong>-PESCADORES—TF 38 makes<br />

powerful air attacks on shipping and airfields at<br />

Formosa, Sakishima Gunto, Okinawa, and the<br />

Pescadores. About 10 oilers and freighters are sunk<br />

and other vessels are damaged. At the airfields some<br />

100 grounded planes are destroyed. Japanese counter<br />

with determined attacks on the warships, severely<br />

damaging the CV Ticonderoga. Fighters of Fifth<br />

Air Force make their first attack on Formosa.<br />

LUZON—In U.S. Sixth <strong>Army</strong> area, XIV Corps<br />

drives beyond day’s objective, line Tarlac–Victoria,<br />

and is ordered to continue toward Clark Field, although<br />

its E flank is exposed for over 20 miles. 160th<br />

Inf, 40th Div, takes Tarlac without opposition;<br />

elements push on to San Miguel. Advance elements<br />

of 37th Div reach vicinity of La Paz. I Corps is to<br />

seize line Victoria–Guimba in strength while protecting<br />

left flank of XIV Corps. 103d Inf of 43d Div,<br />

continuing assault on Hill 600, gains military crest.<br />

158th and 63d Regts finish clearing Blue Ridge,<br />

near Amlang. 63d Inf is then withdrawn into corps<br />

reserve. 172d Inf, clearing heights commanding<br />

Rosario, is reinf by Philippine 2d Bn, 121st Inf.<br />

WESTERN EUROPE—21 <strong>Army</strong> Group: In Br Second<br />

<strong>Army</strong>’s 12 Corps area, 7th Armd Div fights indecisively<br />

near Montfort. 52d Div takes Laffeld and<br />

Obspringen. Waldenrath falls to 43d Div.<br />

12th <strong>Army</strong> Group: In U.S. First <strong>Army</strong>’s VII Corps<br />

area, 84th Div and attached elements of 3d Armd<br />

Div seize Gouvy and Beho. 4th Cav Gp sector is<br />

pinched out. In XVIII Corps (A/B) area, 75th Div<br />

takes Commanster and woods to NE. 30th Div<br />

secures Hinderhausen, Sart-lez-St Vith, Ober Emmels,<br />

and Nieder Emmels. 7th Armd Div’s CCA,<br />

assisted by task force of CCB, clears Hunningen.<br />

Rcn party from 38th Armd Inf Bn is prevented by<br />

roadblock from entering St Vith.<br />

In U. S. Third <strong>Army</strong>’s VIII Corps area, units of<br />

CCA, 11th Armd Div, enter Bois de Rouvroy and<br />

cross Luxembourg border without encountering<br />

enemy. 17th A/B Div occupies Steinbach and Limerle.<br />

In III Corps area, CCB of 6th Armd Div enters<br />

Basbellain; CCA takes Asselborn and Weiler. 359th<br />

Inf of 90th Div occupies Donnange, Deiffelt, Stockem,<br />

and Rumlange; elements of 357th move to Boxhorn<br />

and Sassel. 26th Div and 6th Cav Gp finish<br />

clearing Wiltz and secure Eschweiler, Knaphoscheid,<br />

and Kleinhoscheid. 28th Cav Sq proceeds<br />

through Weicherdange. In XII Corps area, 4th Div
