BUILDING BOOM WAIKATO BUSINESS NEWS February/March 2017 27 Design Builders make building a great experience Ensuring clients enjoy the “experience of building” is a phrase Design Builders Waikato managing director Jeff Marra uses often. By GEOFF TAYLOR Design Builders, which has been in existence for six years in Waikato, builds only unique, custom designed homes and Jeff’s satisfaction at taking clients on that journey and seeing the end result never fades. “Every build we do is a one off, custom designed for our client’s requirements, designed for that particular site and designed for their budget,” says Jeff who has been building for more than 20 years. It’s a style of building that Jeff and his team thrive on. He says, “It’s absolutely rewarding to work with the client from the start, sometimes even before they’ve bought a section. We’ll discuss what they want, and how we can create a beautiful new home for their budget. “We start from a blank sheet of paper, do a design brief and when the client is happy we do detailed design. Then we go through that journey with them, right through the build to ultimately handing over the keys.” That working relationship continues even after the keys Steel Shed Systems extends its brand nationwide Paul and Sue Kingsbeer of Kingsbeer Construction have been in the building industry since 1989, building an enviable reputation for total reliability and in the process receiving 27 Master Builders’ awards. That success is presently embodied in K Built, the residential arm of the business and more recently also in Steel Shed Systems, a nationwide brand which is the result of a partnership with three other like-minded builders, strategically placed in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. A key to Steel Shed Systems’ have been handed over. Jeff and his team are on hand to help with any maintenance that may be required. It’s all part of offering the best possible service. Yes it’s challenging. Every build being unique does offer up different challenges but we love that. We are excited about our place in the market. Jeff says “I believe that designing and building your own unique home should be one of those outstanding life experiences. Every home is different and every client is different which I think is the fun bit.” Jeff beams with pride as he recalls Design Builders handing over three houses to excited clients just before Christmas. “To go and meet those clients again and have beer with them and talk about their experience made us very proud success has been its ability to fill a gap in the market for design and build solutions in the rural/commercial market. Steel Shed Systems has invested a lot of time and resources into developing accurate and comprehensive software pricing systems designed to cope with its innovative engineering and design. “We design and plan your project from conception through to completion,” says Paul. “We listen to your requirements, gain an understanding of the functionality required for your particular building and Hunter Filling Systems’ building Te Rapa. across the whole team.” Jeff and his team are acutely aware that they are often building a client’s “dream home” and the client is understandably anxious or excited. He goes to great lengths to communicate and meet a client’s expectations. “We encourage questions. No question is a silly question, only the one you don’t ask.” Contact is continual and weekly or fortnightly meetings are held with clients – usually on site – also involving relevant sub-contractors. A key to Design Builders’ success – particularly when the building industry is so busy – is the relationship the company has built up over time with sub-contractors. “We’ve got groups of sub contract builders and tradesman who have been working with us for years. It’s an ongoing relationship. They are loyal to us and we are loyal to them.” Sub-contractors are immensely busy and Jeff says he would hate to be starting out in the industry looking for new sub-contractors. The relationships he has built up make all the difference. Because the industry is so busy he may occasionally wait an extra week for a sub contractor to be available for a job. But he would rather do that than get someone they don’t know. “This way, we know they ascertain a budget to work to. This ensures that our customers receive a building designed to their needs.” Steel Shed Systems is 100 percent New Zealand owned, engineered and designed and products made from the finest resources. The company has an advanced team of qualified builders and engineers pooling resources to create buildings with the perfect combination of lightweight and structural steel, whist providing cost effective solutions. But it’s not just about functionality – appearance is important. “Steel Shed Systems understands and recognises the value of architecture,” says Sue. “We will provide you with a building that is not only superior in strength, design and function, but is aesthetically pleasing and great value for money.” Another key to success is the strength of Steel Shed Systems’ buildings. Design Builders managing director Jeff Marra. deliver a quality product for our client,” he says, adding that the sub-contractors enjoy the variety of the work as much as his team does. Another key to the business is interior designer Paula Waterhouse who works with every client to confirm their decisions around the home’s interior including the kitchen, laundry, scullery all the colours, joinery, carpet and tiles. “Paula who owns Paula Waterhouse Design but works closely with Design Builders, plays a very important part in helping our clients with their decision making and giving them assurance around what they are doing.” Design Builders’ success has seen it take on more staff and Jeff can’t speak highly enough about their performance. “I feel a bit lucky to have such an outstanding group of guys in house and that is really the key to do it. Being able to deal with anything that pops up internally is a massive strength I think.” Another strength is Design Builders’ partnership model with other Design Builders companies around the country. They are all separate businesses but share an architectural design centre, marketing, accounting and website. This enable Design Builders to keep overheads low, gives them buying power and enables them to turn around architectural designs in faster timeframes. Jeff says it provides the best of both worlds: Custom designed houses but with the capacity and cost effectiveness of a large building company. Much of Design Builders’ work at present is on the fringes of Hamilton in semi-rural areas like Tamahere and Matangi and beach locations such as Raglan, Waihi and Whitianga. The custom nature of the houses sees Design Builders often working on plenty of sloping or unusual sites. Design Builders’ results speak for themselves, with Paul and Sue Kingsbeer. Paul says their patented roll formed buildings are bolted and screwed together for maximum strength while Portal frames are capable of supporting an extra 1000 kgs of weight. Steel Shed Systems is currently appointing other experienced builders throughout New Zealand to further strengthen the nationwide brand. It already has offices in Northland, Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Manawatu, Wellington and Christchurch and will build anywhere in between. Recently completed projects in Waikato include Hunter Filling Systems, Te Rapa, Snap Fitness in Killarney Rd, Para Rubber, Snap Fitness and Gribbles in Te Rapa, Giltrap AgriZone in Otorhanga, Wealleans Groundspread Ltd in Te Awamutu as a 3000 square metre shed in Edgecumbe. Steel Shed Systems is proud to stand 100 percent behind its buildings with the knowledge that they are made to an exceptional standard. “We are all experienced residential builders so we have an expectation of our sub-contractors to meet our high expectations,” says Paul. literally hundreds of delighted North Island clients. In the last two years, Design Builders Waikato has nailed an impressive five gold medals in the notoriously tough Master Builders House of the Year competition. Jeff loves the uniqueness of what Design Builders does. “Yes it’s challenging. Every build being unique does offer up different challenges but we love that. We are excited about our place in the market.” He says with every new client the aim is the same: “To deliver a great experience through the build and a top quality product.” “The common ground that we all have in Steel Shed Systems is our desire to produce individually customised, high quality, cost effective buildings with an exceptional finish.” SPECIALISING IN RURAL, COMMERCIAL AND INDUSTRIAL BUILDINGS.
