For over 80 years, the Alexkor mine in South Africa’s Richtersveld region has been producing
diamonds of exceptional quality. But since the end of Apartheid, the black and coloured
people who have been deprived of their rights battle hard to have the land of their ancestors
returned to them. Mining exploitation is becoming more difficult and the diamond veins
are showing signs of depletion. The Richtersvelders hope to regain possession of the
mines before resources are depleted in order to secure a better future for their community
in this “new” South Africa.
