Planning Decision I was very disappointed that the Planning Board has now given approval to the application to build thirty two houses at the land ‘East of Fleming Road’, next to the tennis club. As the only one of our four local councillors who formally objected to this development, I believe strongly that whilst development and new housing can be positive, it must be responsibly undertaken and on brownfield sites first. The Scottish Government approved this land for housing and made clear to Renfrewshire Council that more sites should be available. We now have a pre-application notice for land between Brookfield and Houston. I worry about the rapid expansion of our villages without the infra-structure to properly cope. Tesco Linwood Many Houston residents have enjoyed using the new Tesco Linwood for their shopping and the bright spacious store also has a appealing coffee shop. I was approached by residents to enquire whether a Post Box could be sited there and following my request I am pleased this will now happen. The new Tweedie Hall and Linwood Library have been warmly welcomed by the local community also. Keep Informed! www.advertizer.co.uk june 2015 kilmacolm & quarriers ..................................................... 37 37 The Local Government Boundary Commission for Scotland recently consulted the Council on its proposals for new Council wards in Inverclyde on the back of its recommendation to increase the number of Councillors in Inverclyde from 20 to 22 to take account of the level of deprivation in the area. Although the Council previously argued against this increase on cost grounds the Commission decided to press ahead to the next stage of developing new ward proposals. Under the Commission’s plans the number of wards would increase from 6 to 7 and there would be changes to a number of the existing wards. The current Ward 1 (Inverclyde East), which incorporates Kilmacolm and Quarrier’s Village, would be reduced from a four member ward to a three member ward with a significant area of Port Glasgow moving into Ward 2. At a meeting of the Policy & Resources Executive Sub-Committee on 14 May Councillors decided to maintain the Council’s objection to the increase in the number of Councillors and to make comment on the new ward proposals. Once it has considered the Council’s representations the Commission will put its proposals out to public consultation. Following the withdrawal of two short-listed candidates the post of Kilmacolm Primary School Head Teacher was re-advertised to try to ensure that the selection panel had a number of candidates to choose from. Hopefully the new Head Teacher will be appointed before the end of this term. We are both pleased to have been invited by the Twinning Society to Kilmacolm’s French Day on Saturday 6 June, which kicks off at 10.30 a.m. In the Cargill Centre. There will be a pipe band, choirs and speeches from the Provost, Twinning Society Chair Gerry Boyle and pupils from St Columba’s School and their French visitors. A French Waiters’ Race will then take place in Birkmyre Park and we return to the Cargill Centre for prize giving, wine, cheese, etc. Other French themed activities will be taking place throughout the village during that day. Unfortunately, I have been unable to write a column for the Advertizer for the past few editions as I was in hospital for three months. I would like to thank everyone who sent cards and get well messages. Now that I have been discharged from hospital any constituents requiring my assistance please contact me. Last month voters in Inverclyde elected my colleague Ronnie Cowan as the district’s new MP. He is hard working and will do his best for his constituents and for Inverclyde. I congratulate Ronnie in becoming our new Member of Parliament. There have been several thefts reported in Kilmacolm recently. I would urge all residents to ensure their garages and garden sheds are locked securely and that constituents seeing anyone acting suspiciously please contact the police. The Kilmacolm Twinning Society have organised a number of activities on Saturday 6 June as part of the French Gala Day for when the guests from the twin village of Merignies are visiting. I am sure it will be a fun packed weekend which the organisers, French guests and local residents will enjoy immensely. This year is the 40th anniversary of the paddle steamer Waverley sailing in preservation. The sailing season is now underway. I have enjoyed sailing doon the Clyde a few times over the years. It is always a good day out on the Waverley and a day’s sail is something that people should consider over the summer. On a slightly larger sailing scale. The new cruise season has now began and it is expected this year that 100,000 passengers will arrive at Greenock’s Ocean Terminal. It is great to see that even more cruise ships and passengers are arriving this year which should help give a further boost to Inverclyde’s local economy. It would be good if we saw more ships starting their cruises from Greenock as I am sure it would be an opportunity to attract more people to our district. This was a suggestion I put to the Ocean Terminal General Manager Andrew Hemphill a few years ago. With plans agreed to now extend berthing opportunities at the Ocean Terminal hopefully this may entice more companies to consider set sailing and finishing their cruises in Greenock. My next surgeries in June will be advertised in the local newspaper and through my surgery posters. Save The Children Week On Saturday 2nd May a bucket collection was held in Kilmacolm in aid of Save The Children. The money raised will contribute to disaster relief in Nepal, following the earthquake. Further, during April, many of the village shops collected money on behalf of Save The Children and that will go also towards that disaster relief. Overall, a total of £368.35 was raised. Thank you so much to all who donated to this cause and to our shops for helping.
